I am just amazed at the fidelity of this recording. I find the collaboration of Cortot, Thibaud and Casals absolutely breathtaking. I surmised while listening to this that the three were friends, and I wasn't wrong for a change. It's a joyous interpretation and my favorite!

Tempos eccentric at times but the delineation of the voices is admirable, with Thibaud's violin so mellifluous and Casals; cello superbly resonant. Cortot's maestoso feel for the slow movement and filigree passage work in the finale is memorable, in my view.

+Ric Droz Gracias! for the comment. The archduke trio has a memorial quality of the composer, as well as the three chamber players, which haunts one, recalling how wretched his health was at the time if writing it. Mendelssohn's C Minor trio Opus 66, has similar meaning for me---at 88!

After listening to this version multiple times and comparing to several other interpretations, I have concluded that this is what the maestro intended. Of the others, I have heard the keyboard overpowers the intent of the strings as in the Barenboim/DuPre recording. It is unimaginable that this recording dates to 1928!

It is very, very early Romantic - Romantic covers more than a hundred years - played with all the understated focus and precision of traditional Classical style, no needless portamenti etc. Consequently it grips you throughout and brings you just an inch closer to Beethoven.

    So, so intimate...
...and I don't mean because it's "chamber music."
Listening to this performance of this piece (completed in 1811; it sounds much later than that), I feel as though three friends of longstanding have gotten together to make some music, and we're allowed to eavesdrop.
I researched this performance, and it seems to have been recorded in the late 1920's (at just about the time that "sound" was coming to the movies), which, given it's audio quality, I find utterly astounding.

Sabiéndome quebradizo y no Ave Fénix .

"Much affected by the tragic death of his friend Enrique Granados in the torpedoing of Channel steamer the Sussex, in March, 1916, Casals helped to arrange a concert for the benefit of this victim of the 'humanitarian' methods of warfare, and a New York audience had the unique experience of hearing Ignace Paderewski, Fritz Kreisler, and Pablo Casals in trio - the great B-flat of Beethoven. All musical world and more crowded into the Metropolitan Opera House that night, while many others tried in vain for entrance." - Reprinted from Pablo Casals by Lillian Littlehales, by permission of W.W.
