  • We all have so many questions about the SeaDoo Switch. We were curious how well it could handle some rough water, so we tested it out in the Gulf of Mexico on a day with high winds!

    SeaDoo Switch Compact 13' owner here. I would if you own the smaller one like mine do not take it into open water! Although I have not done that with mine we already had a scary experience a few weeks ago within the intercoastal waterway. Basically our switch took on water and did a nose dive after catching a rough wave/wake created by a passing boat. Not sure how it did not flip completely but my Wife who was sitting in the back seat was catapulted and thrown overboard and so where other three people on the boat, I managed to hold on and somehow the pontoon recovered. So that proved to us this little craft is only made for calm lake or intercoastal water only. I guess there is a big difference from 13 to 18 when it comes to that.

    I went to a local dealer and looked at these boats. I loved the concept. Boat feels much bigger than it is. But it's all plastic. Brand new boats sitting in the lot for the past year look used. The plastic around the outside fades quickly. Makes you wonder how long until it begins cracking especially in salt water. Because of all the plastic around the outside we decided to go with a different boat.

    Thinking about one as a Yacht Tender due to size , weight, seating capacity, avail floor space for grocery and party restocking, plus a little adventure versatility. What do you think about a Switch being Ocean only and possible fishing platform ( bays , coves , river mouths ) ?

    • @JetBoatPilot
      @JetBoatPilot  Před rokem +2

      It could be a good tender. It's lightweight. I am not sure how it will do in saltwater long-term because this boat was not purpose built for saltwater. We'll be observing how ours holds up in salt use since that's all our Switch sees.

    This is actually the first pontoon (tri-toon) I have EVER seriously considered buying, we have a center console v-hull for fishing. My wife has always wanted more of a party boat, but until now (unless your looking the the most high end tri-toons with twin 350s) they are mostly all floating docks that dont handle bays, putt putt around, generally mini-vans of the water...we still have 2 stroke gtx's that run great so I wouldn't be concerned with reliability....do Sea-Doo superchargers still require routine replacement? Thats the one thing keeping me away, our 2 strokes keep up with, or outrun most of the newer N/A skis, didn't seem to make sense to change to 4 strokes.

    Also good to mention for small watercraft; wind over 15kts isn’t boating weather on the ocean. The swells toss people around and it’s not enjoyable at all. As a captain it would be really irresponsible to keep people in that situation due to danger of going overboard. If the caps are white and the boat is small, find something else to do that day. @@castrejon1982 There's really only one pointer I can give you when you're in other boat's wakes and that is to quarter them. That means approach the wave at a 45 degree angle. Don't approach head on and don't try to run along side the wake. A 45 gives you the least amount of shock and the safest crossing. Otherwise, keep the bow up and the weight in the middle to rear when in the rough.

    Yeah, looks calm but those are a little rough waters. Took my 18-230 to the pacific off the coast of Oxnard a few weeks ago. Now that was rough. We got a little scared so didn’t make it more than a half mile off shore. Those waves are a little much for the switch but it handled really well. We got sideways a couple of times and since it was me and my teenage boys I thought I’d better not push it. I do believe this switch could handle super rough waters as long as you’re navigating the waters slowly and thoughtfully. No one out here on the west coast has seen these much.

    Will the switch sink?…..especially with the poly material used in construction?

    • @JetBoatPilot
      @JetBoatPilot  Před rokem

      While all boats can sink, I think the Switch is not likely to sink with normal use. The pontoons are filled with floatation material and there is little open volume to fill with water. Unlike traditional bow riders which are essentially large bathtubs floating around, the switch is an open deck platform with covers over its storage lockers. Most likely water that were to come over the railing would simply flow off the deck and leave the boat floating safely.

      I don't think I'd chance it. The tank only holds about 30 gallons. I have not tested this myself but I saw another CZcamsr state that they got 70 miles on a tank with some fuel left in reserve. If you do chance it I'd take some extra fuel with you to be safe. As long as you're not WOT the whole way you could make it but again I'm not sure I'd take that risk, not to mention that's an awful long time to be out in open water with no safe harbour to duck into if the weather takes a turn for the worst. If you have perfect weather you'd probably have fun and no issues. But the one thing I've learned about the open ocean is that things can go from great to total crap storm in just a few minutes. That's the reason I have not made the Bimini run on a jet boat just yet. Many of my friends have and most did fine. But one year several had big trouble and one guy even lost his PWC to the storm. No telling where that thing is today.

      You do need to make sure that you have a service center nearby. This is a new boat and I am sure they're working out kinks that only a SeaDoo Authorized Service Center can handle. If you don't have one nearby you may want to consider another brand that could service you better.

      No, we are completely independent. We just love our Switch and wanted to teach others what we've learned so maybe it helps a bit. Dealers got in trouble last year and the year before due to supply chain Shortages. In order to keep their staff paid and their bills paid they had to increase margins on the units they did have. Now that supply is starting to recover you'll see them getting more competitive again. Margins will go back to pre covid norms. Prep fees and other add on costs will get negotiated down. Sorry you did not get a Switch but I hope you still have some fun on the water this year!

      A new boat will never be priced competitively compared to a used one. Look at cars... It's like that but even heavier depreciation. That being said, people love the novelty of the Switch line, but they're really just big pontoon shaped hunks of plastic. A real boat hull will always perform better than a pontoon.

      After owning one, I realize that ANY of the Switch models are WAYYYYY overpriced for what you get IMO, plastic pontoons, and 95% of everything else made of plastic, and cheap plastic at that!!! We got rid of ours after only one season. The thing was literally falling apart with so many things cracked or broken (everything's plastic ya know) that it just wasn't sensible to keep it any longer. And for those thinking "big deal if there's no side entry", wait till you have one, and you'll realize how much of a gigantic PITA not having a side entry really is.
