As a trainer, the number one mistake I saw people make was not talking enough to their dogs. It usually consisted of, at most, a few monosyllabic command words and then occasional baby-voice phrases.
Dogs have been listening to us speak for, at the very least, 15,000 years, and maybe as much as 30,000 years! They love to hear us talk to them. I honestly believe that dogs are born with an instinctual understanding of the tones of voice that humans use.
Talk to your dog!! Tell them about your day. Tell them how you feel. If you do it often enough, you will start to be amazed at how many things they will begin to understand. It is good for them... and it is good for you!

I not only talk to dog, but we have “conversations.” With every bark, huff, sniff, whine, or whimper, I’ll say things like, “What’s wrong?” “Really!” “You don’t say!” “Then what happened?” “What!” “I can’t believe it!” And on and on and on... I really get a kick out of our conversations, and I think he enjoys humoring me!

Really? Did Lowes tell you that? Because they love them in Fort Collins, even showering them with attention and treats. But, I can tell you where they don't belong: in crates while you work, outside all the time, on hard surfaces where they have to sit and sleep for long periods of time, lapping up a bowl of tap water that is saturated with chemicals and chlorine, or with their nose in a bowl of food filled with crap corn, wormy by-product and fillers that shorten their lives, in a place where they are ignored, belittled, chastised and not really loved, or exposed to bratty kids who think it's funny to torment them. In case you were going to respond: get a doggie door and lovingly teach them to poo outside and keep the air on in the summer and the heat on in the winter when you're away. Get a filter for your faucet or give them drinks from your filtered fridge water, buy Nutro or Blue or something with decent ingredients, and treat them with kindness.

    • @kibasmommy8310
      @kibasmommy8310 Před 6 lety +25

seedabeauty yeah they did. They told me they are changing the policy because the dogs pee and poo in the aisles and they're tired of the owners not picking it up. Also they would not mind so much if the dogs were on leashes but a lot of owners think they are above the rules and have them off leash. Then the dogs are unruly and not listening to the owner. I was surprised. For the few jerks who have no control over their dogs the rest of us will have to suffer

I love dogs, i'm 66 years old and dogs are truly mans best friend. I don't understand how people can be so cruel to an animal that just wants love and companionship. I think it's so sad that the creator gave dogs such a short lifespan. I believe they're here to teach us how to love one another. When my wife and I go to visit people, my wife calls me the dog wisperer because for some reason I'm the one the dogs always respond to the most. I think they can tell when you love them. If you sit down and cry, your dog will cry as well. For all the people out there that abuse dogs, one day your abuse will be returned a hundredfold, and I'm sorry for the people out there that get a kick out of hurting dogs. I'm no bad ass but don't ever abuse a dog in front of me or there will be hell to pay. Remember what dog is spelled backward. Believer or not, everyone will one day face the creator and face the consequences of their actions. Try being nice to animals and see what happens. If you decide you love to hurt dogs, then go to a veterinarian and watch while someone has an old friend put to sleep that meant to world to them. If you are not touched in the heart and soul, then you are truly a lost human being.

I don't care what anyone says but I truly believe that rescued animals remember the bad environment you removed them from and they will attach to you faster and stronger. Some were harder to re-associate with a normal life (skiddish) and some took to it right away. My point, if you don't have the time or patience for a dog...get a fish tank!

I'm just gonna put this here (source: reddit):
"Keep in mind that dogs from responsible breeders doing health testing for their breeding stock are invested in the breed. They are producing dogs of sound temperament (which is what you would need if you wanted one that fits the breeds description and gets on with cats).
Dogs in shelters need homes too, however, if you have specific needs or desire for a specific breed it’s more difficult. Dogs in shelters, even when purebred, are not from responsible breeders. A tenant of responsible breeding is that any animal produced by the breeder will be taken back by the breeder if they find themselves without a home so that they never end up in the shelter system. Dogs from shelters are not from responsible breeders, they are mostly from backyard breeders that don’t care about health or temperament.
In fact there are even shelters that bid on dogs from puppy mills, the most abhorrent of dogs producers. These people make money selling to shelters and their dogs live in horrible conditions. These are the opposite of responsible breeders that raise their puppies in the home and socialize them to life and care about their health and well-being for the rest of their lives.
There is nothing ethically wrong with buying from a responsible breeder. You are more likely to get a puppy that actually suits your needs. There are many great dogs in shelters, however I would personally recommend going for an adult dog if you decide to go that route. As an adult, the temperament of the dog is already set in and predictable so it would be less of a gamble than a puppy with a lot of unknowns in terms of temperament and health (temperament is largely genetic in dogs)."
If you want to go this far, how can you adopt dogs that come from breeds such as King Shepherd & others?
I do understand the motive, to bring in a homeless dog, but you don't know where it came from, and nor the dog will likely be a breed that you love, as long as it still lives and has a home, but you don't virtue signal.
You can't just tell anybody to go and adopt all the dogs though. The dogs deserve to live just like we do, and as long as you can afford and be able to rescue one, you should, but you don't go around and virtue signal about how we should be more in adoption than buying a dog (from responsible breeders) with the direct characteristics we want.
So to end this, the fact that every dog deserves a loving home, doesn't differentiate the ones who are adopted and those who aren't. Nor does that quite justify the fact we should be more oriented to adopt homeless dogs rather than simply buy the dog with the characteristics we want.
I honestly understand your viewpoint but this is just plain virtue signalling even if it's for a good cause. If you are a first-time dog buyer, just go buy your dog. Better be guaranteed to have the dog you want rather than play with a higher level. But should this matter since you're just giving another being a loving home?
      Preferences.

Our first dog was an 8 months old rescue. A blessing. He required little training and we could take him almost anywhere off-leash. Our second dog, another rescue was 9 months old. We got him 18 months later but he was a different story. He was rather hyper-active, independent and wouldn't recall. When we went for walks in woods (off-leash, as was our custom), he would run ahead and many times disappear for 20 minutes to an hour. We were desperate so we engaged a personal trainer.
We told the trainer our problem and pledged to do anything she advised, without question, but in the end we wanted to be able to take this dog on our walks in the woods off-leash and under control.
One of the things our trainer advised was to withdraw "gratuitous affection". There were many other things we were to do but this one, we knew, was going to be a challenge! We love our dogs so much, we weren't sure we could accomplish this one. Fortunately, our desperation was motive enough to follow through.
I won't go into the training details but I will say that our trainer trained us well. At the end, we ended up with a much calmer and obedient dog after 4 weeks of disciplined training. Five weeks after training started our trainer took us out to the woods where we unleashed the dogs. BOTH recalled obediently every time! Tears of joy!
The remarkable thing about our second dog was that during our walks, he would run ahead then stop an check to see if we were still there. In the past, he would do the same thing but didn't seem to care that we were there at all. Wonderful
Another cool thing that happened was when we met a fellow dog owner in the woods. He asked what happened to our "other dog". We asked "what do you mean by other dog". He said the one that we had that was so anxious and excitable. We laughed and pointed out that this was the same dog. He was amazed at the change and so were we. We hadn't noticed how much calmer and happier he was.
    Cheers.

Captain Ron I’m glad that you’re able to enjoy off-leash walks in the woods now. Would you please give one or two examples of what you did to withdraw “gratuitous affection” from your dogs? Thanks!

    • @priayief
      @priayief Před 6 lety +6

Nichole Green - Funny story about that. We had our first meeting with out trainer in our living room. She was giving us an overview of what the training would entail. I was listening attentively and petting one of our dogs. She got to the part which mentioned withdrawal of gratuitous affection, then paused an looked directly at me and said, "Like you're doing now". I hadn't realized it but one of our dogs was sitting beside me and I was stroking his head. I had not realized I was doing this! Its just so automatic! I knew then that this was going to be more of a challenge than I thought, even though there were other big changes in our lives during the training.
I said we were desperate and we were. But if you think about it, the welfare of this dog depended on our succeeding. We did not want to constrain him to being on-leash all the time and being let loose only at dog parks. Yes, we worked hard at not giving affection freely to our dogs. And we succeeded, judging by the results.
I'm not sure I could come up with specific examples, but affection was given only as reward for good behavior. We didn't use treats for training; the reward was affection for obedience. If you think about it, if affection is freely and generously given, then it means little as a motive for good behavior. Cheers.

As a professional handler for over 30 yrs, I have been constantly amazed at the number of (so called) trainers that still say the owner must "dominate"

I would add: Use UPspeak to them when they are being good and when you just want them to feel loved. Don't yell at them when they bark at the squirrels, or just because they are barking. Sometimes it is a happy to be alive bark, sometimes a hello bark, sometimes they think they are guarding you and want to feel they've done a good job. And socialize them often, don't keep them in a small backyard, crate or small apartment with little stimulus. That, in effect, is putting them in a straight jacket. If they weren't crazy before, that will facilitate behavior problems. And...it's just plain mean. Dogs need a lot...but they give more.

I feel like it’s my duty owning such an amazing dog to return the favor of her companionship to me by taking her everywhere she can possibly go before her time comes. I feel guilty that she’s spent so much of her life indoors since it’s not in her nature to be stuck inside. But there isn’t much you can do when you don’t have the money to invest in adventure. He is a very large pup probably 95 lbs. now & he loves it when we bring him a new toy when shopping. Very smart & learns fast - our first day with him he learned how to sit on command. When he comes inside after being out he receives a dog cookie after he sits. He loves to play when we throw his squeaky ball & runs around like a whirlwind. He is a good dog & loves us & his home & we love him.

    Unique, indeed.
    Play every day!
I use to play with my son whenever I had a minute...We are still good friends. He's thirty,by now.
    Additionally,I let him space.
    Same,in this respect, with...dogs.

I always ask my dog "you wanna come help me?"
This could be making the bed, getting something out of the garage or me going to the bathroom. He loves to come along; I tell people he is the supervisor. haha.

I do dog rescue and have 5 rescued dogs of my own. I love them dearly and spend a lot of time petting and massaging them. I also cook for them!!! they are my heart and soul! I had some men who were going to do some handy work for me. as soon as the guy walked in he kinda took his foot like get away at my little fox terrier who was barking at him. guess what...he didn't get the job!! a man from another company came. when cow started barking at him he kneeled on the floor and started petting and talking sweetly to my dog....and...oh yeah! he got the job!!!!

    My puppy 🐶 knows time
Everyday my puppy barks when she knows that it’s time to go to school and barks when she needs or runs out of food and if she doesn’t need anything then she will sleep
    (What a good puppy!)

I've always felt the best way to express affection for a dog is meet them halfway; they adapt to us, so I've tried to adapt to them by incorporating canine behaviours into my life with them. For example, I will eat at the same time they eat, in the same room, and always share a little of what I'm eating the way a dog pack would feed. Likewise, I love big, strong dogs, so I love getting really physical, wrestling and tumbling with them in the grass, biting and snarling and yelping until we collapse together side by side, scratched and bruised and thoroughly exhausted.

I have 2 dogs from the same litter.Boys Golden retriever and lab mix Abbot & Costello two different dogs.Abbott is a ball dog give him a ball and we will play catch until he derides to skin the ball( A lacross ball is the only one he has not destroyed). Costello is a soft mouth as long as he has his blanket he's a happy dog.he likes to tug and play keep away both there tails wag all the time.
we just bought a king size bed so the wife and I have some room. There tails are strong and they are our alarm clock.AT 6:30 to 7:30 you hear thump thump thump means we want to go out and them feed us.Costello if he needs something he licks your face till he gets your attention.Abbott just paws you
They are a blessing and a pain We love our dogs

40 minutes a week seems pretty low. That's about 6 minutes of play a day, which is enough for a small fetch or tug session. That doesn't seem like enough. Although my perspective may be skewed because I have a relatively high energy dog, so those numbers may be much higher for her.

@1:55 it says to spend at least 10-15 minutes a day training your dog, but I was referring to the part @4:00 where it says "During the week, try to reserve at least 30 to 40 minutes for intensive play time with your dog".
