    As a doctor, Clinic sounds like it would hit way too close to home. Parking is...a huge issue. I spend at least 2hrs a week listening to people talk about parking. I just want to see patients!

    I really think it would be worth while for the dice tower awards to add a category for best rule book of the year. It seems difficult enough to write a great one that is worth celebrating.

      I feel that. Backed the original Kickstarter, the component quality is great but the game is just brutal. Enjoyed the exploration aspect, but ultimately there’s only one thing that matters and it’s the holy grail... and the holy grail is in a cave with only one way in or out and you get that every other player is going to be sitting on that entrance with baseball bats waiting for you to come out. It really didn’t feel enjoyable to play the endgame. Currently the game is on my list of don’t-play alongside Risk and Innovation, and I feel like I need to get the co-op expansion so that I can get some use out of it. Never playing it competitive again.

      All games should get someone who writes for a living (like me) and loves to play and teach a variety of game styles (like me) to take a fresh look at rules books well before production. I quite enjoy Island of El Dorado. While I agree the standard rules are crazy random (not more random than Catan), I think you do need to play the hardcore mode but the luck minimizes after that and dice battles can be less random also. While I haven’t played the cooperative version yet I’m excited to do so. I’ve played a few times and it’s killed so far! Quirky Circuits is an awesome game! I'd argue that it's more like Hanabi+Robo Rally than The Mind+Robo Rally. Unlike The Mind, you actually have information to go on besides just timing. Deducing which cards people might have played is a huge piece of the game. With that said, it's definitely not going to be for everyone.

    Just a suggestion but maybe not have games so prominently displayed behind you in a Negative video, that are not subjects of the video. 'People' have short attention spans and if they just watch the first part of the video they may assume that the games on display are ones which you are going to talk about.

  • @nshaw1299
    @nshaw1299 Před 3 lety

    Regarding 'Quirky circuits', I think it's important to put the 'quality of limited communication' on a scale, with 'The Mind' being zero which is why it's a non-game IMO, and a game like 'The Crew' much higher, because the clue you are giving to the other players is important, and a good clue can allow deduction.
    Here it's a pretty low score, as it's only the back of the basic cards... So it is indeed close to 'The Mind'. BUT, it's not zero. Emphesizing this will help similar games be more like 'The Crew' than 'The Mind' (at least IMO)

    I like the reviews, but I was very thrown off by the shelf of games behind him. Wondering when Ctrl and Smartphone would be mentioned. I assume now these are paid promotions. Distracting.

    I thought that Tom was reviewing Arkham Horror when he was talking about Nemos Rising. ;)

    The more I find my tastes are so different from Tom’s, the less I watch these videos. A bit more objectivity would be nice. I did appreciate a bit of that in the first two games: “Good game, just not for me.”

      I don't think so. I see it frequently these days, probably in no small part due to Mark Rosewater (head of Magic the Gathering) who uses the term frequently in his articles.

    Not sure if videos like these are needed. The Dice Tower videos already often has negative/apathetic tone when it comes to board games. Instead of focusing on what a board is NOT, we could focus on what a board IS. All board games belong to some extend because they were created to enjoy, not to be critiqued.

      Maybe you could read the title and then just skip the video.

      Quite the contrary for me. For example, Radho's reviews are sometimes soooooo sugar-coated that I feel hyperglycemic and nauseous after watching them. (Note: I really do love Radho's work). This HONEST review format that viewers can use as a warning label is a huge breath of fresh air.

      If someone says every game is great how can you get a good picture of the quality of the game that is being reviewed. Liking a game is subjective but if I know someone doesn’t usually like X mechanic or X theme but then tells me they like a new game with that mechanic/theme that gets my attention and interest. Negative reviews are great because they create a baseline of quality for that reviewer and helps users get an idea of what games to potentially buy. Someone telling me everything is great is completely useless to me and offers 0 value vs someone who is honest on what he/she likes and doesn’t like even if I don’t agree with it.

      I agree with you all actually - honest reviews (positive or negative) are warranted. At the time of this comment I think I was just tired of the Dice Tower.
