Buying a car in Virginia is the worst! There aren’t any laws in Virginia that limits how much a dealer can charge for a doc fee. They can literally make it 100% of the car’s MSRP and no one can stop them. Maryland is located right above Virginia and it’s a night and day experience. Maryland has a lot of consumer protection laws, including a law that prohibits dealers from charging more than $500 in doc fees.

I remember when a brand new base model Tacoma was 12-14k and then dealers found out that everybody wanted one so they started marking up the prices over the years. This wasn't even that long ago either. Like 12-15 years ago. There's no way in hell we've had a 500% increase in inflation over the past 15 years yet they are still using that lie because people will still fall for it. It's high time people stop buying new cars altogether for at least a few years so we can crash the market and get car prices back down to reasonable.

In November I went to my local Toyota dealer in California, North Bay. I wanted them to find me, when they started to be available a 2024 SR5 4x4 Longbed doublecab with navigation and the cold weather package. She said, okay, but they were not taking deposits since they would be selling the new Tacos on first come first sold basis although they would let me know if they could get the config I wanted. About 6 weeks past and I finally got call. The saleslady told me that Toyota was simply not going to build more than a handful of long bed SR5s because it was not a popular config. On top of that she said that the dealer got their allocation of the fist 2024s and none were SR5s and they would be arriving in Mid-late January. Okay, I said I'd come take a look when they arrived. I never got another call back but I drive by/near the dealer regularly so when the first Tacos showed up I stopped by late on a Sunday to take a look at the handful of pre-runner, TRD Sport and TRD Off Roads they had. All but one had a sold sign and the PreRunner had a sticker, with market adjust coming out to $51,400. What? I looked a few more times as more Tacos arrived, but as you have noticed, they were selling sluggishly. I had configured a TRD-Sport on the Toyota website that came to $46K. They had 2 TRD Sports, neither with Nav and they were above $60K Into February they finally got some SR5s, all short bed and none of those were 4x4, still they were $49K.
I ended up buying a deeply discounted NEW 2023 RAM 1500 Warlock 4x4 with every available option and the 3.6L V6 that gets the same mileage as the Taco 4 banger. It has UConnect 8.4 w/ Nav, Alpine stereo, towing package with the 3.55 limited slip rear end, cold weather package, parking sensors, power sliding rear window with defrost, 6'4" bed and power folding side trailer tow mirrors. Sticker was 53,900 and it was marked down to 33,900. Best thing I ever did and this coming from former owner of 3 Tacomas and 1 Tundra which I still sorely miss.
The new SR5 is goofy looking, super cheap inside with lots of thin plastic all around including the bumpers. My new RAM has powder coated steel bumpers front and rear with tow hooks and fog lights.

I bought my 2006 Tacoma SR5 V6 longbed for $26,500 out the door (tax, license, delivery fee, etc…). Once everything is added up these 2024 trucks will run you over $50k + financing. It’s been a very reliable vehicle, it tows up to 6500 lbs (4000 lbs is a good max if you don’t want the truck to struggle too much), and it seats up to 5 people. All of the bells and whistles added in 18 years + inflation doesn’t justify it doubling in price. It’s a great midsized truck, but even I wouldn’t buy another one at current prices.

Time was when the main reason people bought pickup trucks was because they were inexpensive transportation. Two doors, a bench seat and a bed in the back for hauling things. Now nearly every pickup out there is a crew cab, with all sorts of luxury items and nanny features that add on to the price. I guess a lot of people have a lot of money to piss away, judging by how many of these $50K and up pickups I see on the road. It's up to everyone to decide what to do with their own money, but personally I refuse to buy anything with a dealer markup on it. I think we'd all be better off following the example of billionaire Warren Buffett, who drives a 10 year old Cadillac. He's got enough money to be able to drive whatever he wants, yet he's smart enough not to waste a lot of money on a depreciating asset. It's always the people who don't really have a lot of money but want to present an image to their friends and neighbors that go out and buy ridiculously overpriced vehicles.
