The 2024 Toyota Tacoma has not been selling as well as the 2023, but there are multiple reasons why. We've never seen this much competition in the mid-sized market, and the competitors are good. Will Toyota eventually lose the status of "king of the midsized truck"? 2024 might be the year if so.

Bought my 2018 Tacoma for $35k sold it with 72k miles for $31k added 11k+tax and got into new truck.
When Toyota dealer told me the price he wanted for a new Tacoma I just laughed and walked out of the dealership.
Colorado looks good and has decent price but I did not want to pay a cent of their mark up. Just walked into Nissan dealership and got one for 4k below asking price ready for overlanding.

I am one of your people you are talking about. Price and residual are the reasons for my switch.
Had a 2021 TRD Off Road Premium (leather, sunroof, heated seats) coming off lease. Psyched to get a 2024 of same thing…wasn’t even considering anything else…until I specced it on their website. It wasn’t the base price which I was ok with…it’s the packages where they hid the big price increases. Premium package on my 2021 was like $3,500. On the 2024 it was almost $9,000!!!!
My 2021 was $45,000. 2024 with same specs was over $55,000. My 10,000 mile lease on the 2021 was $1,000 out of pocket, $338/mo. Website was saying $6,000 down, $668/mo. Took it right out of consideration.
I hadn’t even considered a Nissan Frontier and it was the last one which we said we should at least look at. We were more impressed than we expected. Looked great. Drove great. Tons of features. And the reliability. Was also noticeably faster than my 2021 Tacoma. So that’s what I have now. 2024 Nissan Frontier Pro4X with basically every option they have. Sunroof, heated seats, heated steering wheel, 360 camera, traffic sign recognition, dampened and electronic locking tailgate, cargo bed lights, wireless Apple CarPlay, Fender audio system with a dedicated subwoofer. It’s great and was easily the best bang for the buck. Impressed with the build quality and the fit and finish.
Heavily shopped the Colorado too. Great looking truck inside and out. Was fun to drive. Price in the level
I was looking was comparable (excluding ZR2; was over $60,000). The Z71 and Trail Boss were comparably priced to the Frontier. But they didn’t lease well due to low residuals. Including the ZR2. My 2021 Tacoma residual was $37,000. Z71 was only $28,000 and even ZR2 (we did shop it) was only $33,000 (from $60,000). The Frontier residual was $36,000.
Frontier was the clear winner. Had no hesitation getting as it was in its own league with all factors taken in to account. Have had it a few months now and happy with the decision.

I bought a 2018 Tacoma Sport. I love it. It was my first Toyota ever, and I had wanted a Tacoma for a long time. I even have a lift kit and KO2 tires and Gear rims on it. Everything is blacked out. I seldom go anywhere without someone commenting on it. I am now retired so I literally only drive about (embarrassed to even admit this) maybe four thousand or forty five hundred miles a year - IF that - and it only has 36,500 miles on it now. It'll literally last me forever and it'll probably be around even after I'm gone. I did consider getting a new one, but I didn't like the new engine and I also don't like buying the first or even second year of any new type model. As for the other trucks you mentioned, well, obviously we all have our favorites. I have had a Nissan Xterra and it was a good vehicle for me, and I had it ten years with fairly LOW mileage on it (I never put a lot of miles on any of my vehicles) but started having issues with it that even the dealer couldn't figure out, so I traded it in. So, I won't go with Nissan again. As for Chevy - I'd NEVER buy anything GM, and definitely NOT Chevrolet, but again, MY preference based on past experiences. I've had two Ford F150s, but again, I'm not really in need of a big truck like that and frankly, I'm not a fan of the midsized truck they have. Anyhow, I think Toyota will be fine, but their pricing is a bit out of line, and they'll find that out when the reality of them not selling hits their bottom line.

Price. By far the biggest issue. The charm of the Taco and what made it awesome was that you could get an amazing deal, and a ton of utility out of an ugly little truck. Now it no longer is a good deal. It looks like a fancy boy, and cost premium money too. Yes, it might be utilitarian still. But suddenly every other truck seems like a better deal. I really think Toyota shot themselves on the foot with this. Nothing exemplifies it more to me than those stupid TRD seats. I noticed how they are not bringing them to the 4runner, probably because they got clowned on so much for it. I’m just some dude that bought a Tacoma based on its purported reliability and after only 23k miles it broke down and left me high and dry. I couldn’t even drive it to the dealer. I had to put it on a trailer and haul it in. I simply don’t want anything to do with Toyotas anymore, nothing more nothing less. And why the comment on my financial situation? You know absolutely nothing about me, my finances, or even what I traded it in for.

I bought a 2020 SR 4X4 and got a great deal. I am one of those guys who don't like turbos. I won't be buying another truck until i drive mine to the ground. My last Sienna, my wife, drove went to 276k. Her current Lexus has 120k, and I've seen them hit 300k easy. I guess you could say we won't be in the market for a while. Give me naturally aspirated any day. If i was buying a new truck now, I'd buy a Nissan.

I test drove the new Frontier, Tacoma, and Ridgeline over the last 3 months. I ended up going with the Honda. The ride was much smoother, overall pricing was lower, and the back bench can hold full adults. I also don't have a need to go off road. We'll get snow here and all 3 can handle that fine.

Like everyone is saying, prices are too high and the expectation of reliability has fallen away. The hybrid fanboys are making it impossible to have a real discussion about truck and off-road reliability because they’re too busy pointing out the Prius is a perfect vehicle. That is not a transferable experience.
I don’t buy new cars, that’s for suckers. If reliability drops for the hybrid system or those turbos I won’t be buying a used one.

Toyota was king when the competition was mediocre but the land scape has changed. The GM twins are beautiful capable trucks, the Frontier is old school and reliable and the Ford Ranger is new and fresh with the option of a 2.7 turbo V6. The huge price difference between the Tacoma and all its competitors and the fact that the Tacoma is the only truck out of the midsize field built in Mexico will shrink its sales. Personally if I was going to buy a midsize truck today I would buy a Ranger 2.7 V6 or a GMC canyon AT4. Sad thing is I am a Toyota fan but I'm not really thrilled with the direction Toyota has taken.

I work for Nissan. Own a 22 frontier pro-4x. The new engine/transmission in the 22 was actually introduced in the 2020 models. They were smart and worked out the kinks before releasing the redesign. I love mine. It's been problem free, nice turbo free V6. It was under 50k and plenty nice for me. A trd pro is 70k+ and that's just crazy too me. We're talking 1,000+ dollar payments for a midsized truck!!

I jumped and bought the Frontier Pro4x last month. I love the looks, the engine, and what you get for that price. Initially I was looking for a Tacoma trailhunter until I started seeing the prices of the lower trims. Not to mention the interior is so plastic for all you’re paying for. I also drove a GMC canyon AT4X and that felt great, but let’s say that GMC/Chevy aren’t known for their reliability. Finally, I went to the dealer and drove the Frontier and a Tundra (deciding between a mid or full size at that point). I was really impressed with how the Frontier felt and ended up getting it for a really good price (46.5k out the door, maxed out, 3% interest rate with an offer, $10k down payment for 5 years). So happy with my purchase

I've looked on-line at the new Tacomas and there is already a little bit of discounting going on at some dealerships and you definitely don't have to pay over MSRP. That surprised me to a degree, as I figured there would be huge markups on this fresh redesign. The overall car market is still pretty decent, but a lot of "serial buyers" (those who trade every 2 or 3 years) are so upside down they ae effectively on the sidelines. And the people who are left won't buy unless there is a good deal on the table.
