Crank case covers don't represent a great % of overall weight - much wiser to leave them in situ - offering valuable protection in a tricky operation. Most people take them out whole; if you really, really needed to reduce weight - taking the head off before extraction would make more sense.
I plan on having a video about carburetor cleaning and repair next weekend so be sure and check back for that!

great video, i just cant take out the sprocket and unbolt it from the frame then remove it? its going to be my 1st time! lol
