- German brand Canyon has released its newest mountain bike; the Neuron AL. Modelled on the latest Neuron CF that was rolled out just over a year ago, the Neuron AL takes the same recipe, but cooks it up with an alloy frame to bring the price of entry down to a bit over $2K.
How does it compare to the carbon model? We've just finished testing the Neuron AL 7.0 to find out.

Based on this non-biased video review (+ the associated write up) I just purchased a 2020/21 Neuron 7.0 over both the CF 8.0 version & Spectral AL 6.0..... Why? Well I'm a 48 yo that enjoys the trails in Brisbane (Australia) , but my days of sending it over gaps & whipping the backend are over... this Neuron sounds perfect for me. My enjoyment now comes from keeping fit by riding with my family & seeing my 8yo son catch the mountain biking bug & improve with every ride.
Now speaking of my son .... he is 100% hooked on mountain biking & trains with a junior squad on a very regular basis. Knowing the Neuron comes in an XS + XXS - how does the kids Neuron version stack up? He currently rides a Giant XTC 24 inch hardtail.

I wanted Giant Stance or Trance. Then I had a tip from local trail-rider :) to take a look on this Canyon and I felt in love. I'm not a huge jumper since I was more into a classic XC in the past, so only a few short/low jumps, not so many gravity things, so I chose this one over the more jumpy Spectral. Then I found Neuron 6 2022 in -20% sale here in Europe on official stock, so I'm looking forward. So I hope it was not bad move :)

@FLow Mountain Bike Thanks for the review Wil. With the recent release of the 140mm Neuron CF which i believe has 0.5degree slacker front end, how would this affect the downhill performance compared to the AL or the old CF?

We haven't ridden the 27.5in Neuron ourselves, since it only comes in Small, X-Small and XX-Small sizes. For what it's worth, Canyon has gone to some lengths to keep the handling as similar as possible between all the sizes - the 27.5in models actually retain a 29er fork and they come with a slightly slacker head angle, which means the trail figure is almost identical to the 29er models. You also get narrower 740mm handlebars, 10mm shorter chainstays, different suspension kinematics, and lighter damper tunes, so there's quite a bit of effort that's gone into optimising them for smaller riders. Thanks for the review! Just sold a 2018 Intense Primer with a 67.5 degree HA and 75 degree SA. With the Neuron, I wish they'd gone a little more slack on the HA, maybe 66 to 67, and a little steeper on the SA - although it looks like it handled just fine on your fairly technical terrain, and climbs and pedals well. The other Canyon I'm looking at is the new Spectral 125, with a very slack 64 deg HA, balanced out with a near 77 deg SA. Still, that's a pretty slack HA, and the bike may not climb or be as good an all rounder as I need.
I feel that Canyon are missing a YT Izzo type bike in their lineup - The Neuron is great for all day riding but for more technical climbing and descending, the Neuron needs to be around 76 ST and 66 HT and another 10mm-20mm of reach. I wish YT did an alloy version of the Izzo!

I want something that can climb really well, but the geometry is not too "racie". Would you recommend going with this as a happy medium?

Regarding the Lux vs Neuron, it sounds like you'd be better off with the Neuron - it's not as light as the Lux, but it is more comfortable, more fun and more stable on the descents. You could make it racier by putting on some lighter tyres, and it would still be a great bike for doing a few races from time to time, especially longer distance marathon events. Hope that helps! I'm kinda in between the Neuron AL 7.0, the CF 8.0 and the Giant Trance 29 2. It would be my first proper Mountainbike, and I want to cross the Alps on it, but also shred some local trails... Maybe even check out a BikePark. Which one should I choose? Or would a 150mm like the Trance 27.5 be more appropriate?
Hello and thank you for your super interesting test. I am french speaker and I probably did not understand everything. But I feel like you enjoyed everything about this bike except the front fork, correct? ... But as you know we do not know how to change this fork because the bike is delivered like this. Is this bike good as is? I am an "amateur" not professional and I generally ride on fairly flat portions with occasional steeper portions. I am 50 years old and I cycle twice a week with outings between 30 and 70 km. I have a 2016 Scott Spark 27.5 "which I'm happy with except for some downhills descents ... Is the Lux the right bike or do I need to steer on a Neuron anymore? The price is super good compared to the Spark ... Thank you and well done again. Ben

Hey mate, I am looking at this bike but the 2022 version. This video was great but I need some aid. I am coming from a road bike and where I live is very flat however we go have a huge sandy flat forest near by. I am not looking to do any huge jumps just trail stuff. Would the new neuron still be a good bike to go for or should I try the stoic?

Is the bottom bracket type basic BSA 68-73 mm? Can you measure length of the tube(that painted aluminium tube)? Maybe my old Bafang mid drive motor will fit in this bike..
The site does not show the AL version. Have they not released them yet? Also does Canyon sell frames only for custom builds?

@@seamus136 I've got it for a bit longer than a month now. Absolutely love the bike. I can almost completely relate to this review. The only thing that bothers me a bit is that the front tends to get a tiny bit nervous going downhill fast. Other than that I can ride it on longer sessions for 4 to 5 hrs or 75 to 90 km without any issue.
@@Daffra What size do you have? Is it the 27.5 or 29 version? A lot of people are saying you should under-size if you get a Canyon, and I'm somewhere between their S and M on the chart. Would like the reach of the M but it comes with a gigantic seat tube and 29" wheels, but the S has tiny reach.
@@seamus136 I have the S with the 27'5 wheels. Their PPS calculator was spot on for me. They say you should go for the bigger size when in-between but I honestly don't know about that. I'm 171 cm with 81,5 cm inseam and I feel like this size S can't have a much bigger person on it.

Been looking a while at canyon for my first full suss. I live in a fairly flat area of the UK so really need a bike that is good for pedalling out the miles on flat/undulating terrain while at home but then can be taken on trail centre trips and to more challenging terrain. Currently have a Kona Blink hardtail which has been good fun on the hills and trail centres (even the Alps) but not so great and feels a little cramped when pedalling the miles at home, so want something capable of ‘XC’ style rides.
Neuron sounds a good bet and good all rounder but before i take the plunge what are your thoughts and what alternatives should I be looking at in my situation and for this kind of money? Thanks again

Great review Will. You are nailing these. How would you say it compares to a Norco Optic. More or less playful and more or less capable when pointing down? Keep up the radness flow boys.
Cheers for the feedback mate, glad you enjoyed the video! Compared to the Neuron, the Norco Optic is a more aggressive bike that's biased much more towards descending. You get a bigger 140mm travel fork, a piggyback shock, wider bars, and aggressive tyres. It's also pretty out there in terms of geometry - it's significantly slacker (65-degree head angle) and the reach is a lot longer, which means the wheelbase is 30mm longer than the Neuron AL (in a Medium). I've not spent any significant time on the Optic, so I couldn't comment on it directly. But I think given those differences, you'll find the Optic a more capable bike for whooping steep descents and hitting stuff hard, but perhaps less agile and efficient than the Neuron AL on the climbs and traversing-type singletrack. Hi, great review for me, thanks! Your test probably convinced me. I have been hesitating for several weeks between Trance 2 and Neuron Al 7. I do not ride bike parks, but rather forest paths and easy trails, in a hilly landscape, 30-50 km. Trance seems to me more for trails, Neuron should be also fine for longer terrain rides and uphill, what do you think? I'm small, 166cm / 73cm so the calculator shows me S size. Perhaps it will suit.

Cheers for watching mate! You're a little bit taller than me (I am 175cm) so the Medium should fit you fine. However, you'll want to check your saddle height - mine is around 70cm (BB to saddle). If your saddle height is much shorter than that, then you will find it difficult to get the saddle low enough to achieve your proper pedalling height with the Medium frame, since the seat tube is quite long.

Having ridden both the 2019 and 2020 Neuron models, I have to say that the new 2020 model is a big step up. Aside from the packaging improvements, the suspension performance on the 2020 Neuron is much better - it's smoother, with better small-bump sensitivity, but it also has much better support through the mid-stroke and at the end of the travel.
I found with the pre-2020 Neuron that the suspension had a habit of blowing through far too easily - I would bottom out the rear shock all the time. You can increase air pressure, or add bigger volume spacers, but it took away the sensitivity, to the point where it just felt harsh and uncomfortable.
So for me, I would recommend either the 2020 Neuron AL 6.0 or the 7.0. The spec on the 6.0 is great value, and the 12-speed Shimano stuff works really well. However, the RockShox Judy fork is a big downgrade over the Fox 34 Rhythm fork. If you can afford the 7.0, you'll get a much better suspension package for more serious riding.

No idea why a difference has now been made to the 2019 models. I probably would have got this over the Spectral if it was available in the US. I'm a bit worried about Canyons lack of presence in the US and hope they aren't leaving the US market.

Xiaoliu Wu I would. I think it works for most riding - XC, Trail and some enduro. Not optimal for bike park or downhill. I really like my Neuron CF 9.0 CF and this is the same geometry

Good question Pedro! The Trance 29er is a great trail bike, and it's a lot of fun too. It has more descending stability compared to the Neuron, since the Trance is slacker and it has a reduced offset fork. The Maestro suspension pedals well too, but it's not as neutral as the Neuron, which climbs better and is more efficient for all-round riding. Hope that helps! [Wil]

Just saying that the equal version from last year was better speced and more affordable, I believe. Same with the Exceed Hardtail.

Nope, it's an archaic design.
It's a on a heavy side for an XC bike if you want to race on it. Now it depends on how competitive you are. At 13kg+ and the plush suspension it's not really the right weapon for an XC race. This is more a trail/all day adventure kind of bike. The old version, the Nerve, used to be much lighter for the same money.
With a lightweight wheelset and xc tyres I think you could (Look at the Hunt xc set for value). Perhaps a carbon handlebar and lose the dropper for race day and you can get this thing into the low 13's maybe even close to 12.9. Your not going to win any races but it will be quick. Put your trail wheelset back on when your done, slam the dropper back in and your ready for the trail. Cheaper than 2 bikes.

I am planning to ride on very technical trails with sharp bends, bumps and jumps but I also want to ride on long distance trails. So, I'm looking for a do-it-all mountain bike but i cant decide between the Spectral AL 5.0 or the Nueron AL 7.0 2020. Which one should i go for? FYI, I am 6.2 and i ride a cheap 29er XC hardtail bike.

The current spectral is more downhill oriented. Has 27.5 tires which are more nimble and 150mm travel. Neuron is more for trails and xc rices in my opinion with some litlle jumps here and there. I think if you're going for big jumps 130mm is bit on the lesser side. I've hear from numerous people that the Spectral is kind of sluggish with the climbs.

Funny enough I look at the Izzo and Trance X as well but you should also look at Orbea Occam H20 or the Stumpjumper alloy both are very good bikes I’m choosing between those 2.

I personally own the giant stance and I believe that that bike is great but the suspension is meh and the fox suspension setup you will get with the canyon is superb, yet it is a lot easier to get the stance at a bike shop. The drivetrain that comes with the stance is the shimano deore, shimanos budget high end saddle which is superb for what you pay, however I do not know much about SRAMs drive train but I have heard a lot of good things about there eagle drivetrain. The Stance does not have a rear thru axle and has low end SX drive. The Neuron has F+R thru axle, dropper and the nx/gx drive is better than the SX.
Neuron is a better bike to build on and is comparable to the Giant Trance in value.

Hey there Douglas! You could probably fit some offset shock hardware, and since the head tube uses a press-in headset, you could probably get angle-adjusting headset cups. I think at that point you'd be modifying the Neuron beyond its intended use as a sporty and efficient trail bike, into something more aggressive. You might want to consider the Spectral as a burlier, slacker option. [Wil]
would you say this is a light weight cross country E Bike - I need an ebike which is light and has rear suspension for bumpy rocky terrain

any ideas on the 2021 Neuron 7? Seems like it's even heavier :/
My Neuron 7 2021 is 14,1 KG, but I've changed the crankset, switched the wheels to DT Swiss M1900 and I am on 27.5 S Size. The 2021 model have good brakes and I am more a shimano fan instead of SRAM.
I'm curious what the proper size for you was and what is your height? I'm 6ft and they recommend a medium?

Hey, what's your height and inseam if you don't mind me asking? I'm 173cm and my gut tells me to go Medium when I look at the geo chart but Canyon suggests a small. I have a feeling it's due to the maximum seat height but I would rather buy the right size frame and swap to a shorter travel dropper if I had to.
Hello pal! I stand at 175cm tall and my saddle height is 70cm (BB to saddle). I can just achieve that saddle height on the Medium size Neuron, but if my legs were any shorter, I would have to downsize the dropper post travel.

Hello mate!
Good question - the Fuel EX and Canyon Neuron are pretty similar on paper, but on the trail the ride quality is quite different.
In general, I've found the Fuel EX to be a tougher, plusher and more planted trail bike. It comes spec'd with bigger volume 2.6in tyres that offer more damping and more traction, and the suspension tune is quite plush and active. The geometry is also slacker and longer than the Canyon Neuron, which gives the Trek Fuel EX a more sure-footed feel on the descents. If you wanted a confidence-inspiring trail bike for pushing your limits on more technical terrain, the Fuel EX would get my pick out of the two.
In comparison, the Canyon Neuron is the more efficient pedalling bike of the two, and it feels faster underfoot. It's also a very comfortable bike for all-day pedalling, and it's a great climbing bike thanks to the snappy pedalling performance and faster-rolling tyres. If you're looking at doing more longer distance riding, and you're not riding as gnarly black diamond singletrack, the Neuron would be the bike to go for.

Hi Will. How would this compare with the Sonder Cortex? I'm looking for a short travel 29er for 30km to 50km loops around the Peak District.
Hey mate! I'm not sure to be honest, as I've not any experience with the Sonder Cortex I'm afraid. The geo is a little different between the two bikes - the Cortex is slacker (66 vs 67.5), and since the reach and chainstays have a touch more length, the wheelbase overall is longer (1191mm vs 1166mm). That should give the Cortex more stability in theory, but I don't know how the suspension and dynamic geometry play into the overall equation. I think that's the impressive thing about the Neuron - it looks conservative on paper, but because the suspension is so good, and the tyres are grippy and supple, it's way more controlled than some folks would assume. Hi there! I stand at 175cm tall, which puts me on a Medium frame size in every brand. My inseam is 81cm, and my BB-to-saddle height is around 70cm. Hope that helps! [Wil]

@@imagemotion9384 - Sounds like you might run into the same issue that I did regarding the long seat tube on both the Neuron AL and the Spectral AL. We're both a similar height, and there's no way I would downsize to a Small frame.
With the Neuron AL 7.0 tested here, I found fitting a lower profile saddle helped to bring the total saddle height down to a comfortable level for me. If you still found the saddle height to be too tall, another option would be to fit a shorter-stroke dropper post. Those are two costs worth factoring in to the price of the bike though.

@@FlowMountainBikeCZcams back in the 90s small frames were often loved, but things have changed so much....I just need to make a decision on which bike, part of me feels the spectral is a midlife crisis choice,(im 44 years old ;) but i would probably go with medium for both bikes despite what the canyon recommends for the neuron

@@FlowMountainBikeCZcams Hi Will, just got my canyon spectral al 6.0 a week ago, amazing bike, just one issue I had was the seat height, im 175cm and 80 inseam, took it or a test up some steep hills to see how it climbs(it climbs) but due to the seat being to high (ive got the dropper as low as it goes into the frame) for the dropper extension i had such pain and developed shin splints (painful and mildly depressing) any thoughts ? cheers

Glad you enjoyed the video Nikita! Regarding the Lux vs Neuron, it really comes down to the type of riding you're doing. The Lux is more of a pure XC bike, so it is more efficient, lighter, and the steering is sharper. In comparison, the Neuron is smoother, more comfortable, and also more steady on the descents. If you're racing XC, go for the Lux. If you're more riding for fun, go for the Neuron. Hope that helps! [Wil]

Certainly does Elias! The stock tyres are 2.3in wide, and there's good clearance in the back of the frame. Canyon says you should be able to fit a 2.4in tyre in there, though it is dependent on the width of the rims (if you fit a wider rim, it usually makes the same tyre wider) and on the brand of tyre. I will run leadville 100 miles mtb, do you think this bike is suitable for that distance? My budget is limited, but I would like to run with a full suspension
@@eliascaballero855 - I've not raced the Leadville myself, but I understand it's a pretty tough off-road event with not a huge amount of technical singletrack right? The Neuron AL will be fine for something like that, and plenty comfortable too, though it won't be as light or as fast as something lighter like a Canyon Lux, which would arguably be a better tool for that job. @@FlowMountainBikeCZcams It is not technical at all, most of them are wide roads where 4x4 trucks pass, the difficulty is the altimetry and the distance, I suppose that a comfortable bike to spend many hours on it would be indicated, I am considering the neuron Al, although it would punish a little the weight, but from the measurements, it seems to be a comfortable bike for many kilometers
Hi. thanks for the great review. Without being able to test ride this bike I'd appreciate your feedback on sizing. According to Canyon website, with a 32" inseam and my height 5'10" (both barefoot) they recommend a M size frame. I've read a few conflicting opinions on going the larger size if close to it in sizing. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

Sounds like you're pretty similar in height and inseam to me, so the Medium frame size is likely to be the right one. However, I'd recommend checking your saddle height (measure from the middle of the BB to the top-middle of the saddle). For me, I run a 70cm bb-to-saddle height, and that's right on the limit with the Medium frame. If your saddle height is less than 70cm, then you won't fit on the Medium frame - unless you put on a shorter dropper post.

Would you recommend going for the S or M with your height? I’m not sure the minimum height with the dropper post will be low enough and I don’t want to have a frame that’s too small either.
At my height I was comfortable on the Medium frame. I certainly wouldn't want to go to the Small with its shorter reach and 27.5in wheels. Because of the long seat tube though, you'll want to be confident that you can achieve your preferred saddle height if you're on the border between two sizes. Canyon provides that information in its geometry chart. Look for 'Seat Height', and you'll see the minimum and maximum saddle height for each frame size. As long as your BB-to-saddle height is within that range, you should be fine. Hope that helps! [Wil]

Hey there Jarrod! Certainly no issues going with the women's model - the frame, geometry and suspension design are exactly the same, they just come in smaller sizes and feature women's specific contact points, which of course you can change as needed. If you went with a slightly bigger frame size (women's or unisex) you could always fit a rigid seatpost to get the saddle down lower to begin with, and as he grows and his legs get longer, refit the dropper post when needed. Hi! Very nice video about the bike. It seems that you know your stuff, so I was wondering if you could help me out with a problem. I would like to get into mountain biking. I have tried to look a good bike to do that. I would hope that if you could tell me your opinion about he bikes that I have looked for. Canyon neuron AL 6.0 is one candidate. Others that I have been looking for are Trek roscoe 7 or 8. I have been able to test the roscoe 8 and I liked it. The terrain where I would ride it would be between trail and cross country, mainly trail I guess and occasional commuting also. I live in europe and I have 1600€ to use on the bike. That canyon neuron AL is just that.
Roscoe is a hardtail, albeit a reasonably nice one. You’d get better pedaling efficiency but probably not much as the Neuron is known for efficiency (for a full suspension bike). The Roscoe has wider tires but they are only 27.5”. The two bikes really aren’t comparable.

No worries mate! I think the Neuron AL could be a great option for that type of riding. It's comfortable and plenty efficient, making it a good mile-muncher that isn't afraid of climbing. The bigger 29er wheels will give you more stability and easier rollover capabilities than the smaller 27.5in wheels on your Spark, which would definitely be advantageous on longer bikepacking trips [Wil]

Great to see the grom bike as part of the lineup. Looks to be the same frame as the womens AL 6.0 XXS, with omission of dropper and some drivetrain differences.

Sure thing Scott, you'd just need to make sure the air pressures are adjusted accordingly. I'd also look at adding volume spacers to both the fork and shock, to help increase the spring rate so you don't bottom them out as easily. [Wil]

I just ordered the Neuron AL 7.0 in Medium size (based on Canyon's size calculator). I was just a little bit concerned about something. I am 182cm height with 87cm inseam. It recommended me a Medium size.
However when I tested just one cm above, so 183cm, it recommends a Large size. I am afraid the Medium might be a bit too short for me as I am just on the hedge of the Medium size. What do you think ? Is it risky or not? (hopefully not thanks to the long seat tube as you mentioned)
It's my first trail bike (did a bit of dirt in my teenage years), but I'm very sporty, gonna ride it for trails or XC-ish style rides, as Belgium doesn't have big mountains. So I really don't know how important the size is.

At your height, Canyon does suggest you are very close to a Large. The first thing I would check is your saddle height. If you can measure the BB-to-saddle height, this will help you determine if your legs are able to fit onto the Large frame size.
My saddle height is 700mm, and I just fit onto the Medium frame, since the seat tube is quite long at 445mm.
On the Large frame, the seat tube is 480mm long, which means the minimum saddle height you could have on that bike is around 735mm.
If your saddle height is 740mm or greater, I would suggest you will fit the Large frame better, since the cockpit will be longer and better suited to your 182cm height.

@@antoinelemaitre2770 - In my experience, Canyon's fit calculator tends to recommend a slightly smaller frame size. I've occasionally been recommended a Small frame size, and at 175cm tall, there is noway I'd ride a Small - the cockpit would be far too cramped.
If you're borderline between sizes, I would almost always suggest going for the larger frame size - providing your saddle height will fit.

@@majorboom3772 Hi! Yes, I bought the M size and couldn't be more satisfied! My seatpost is in the lowest position (or 0,5 cm upper) and it's just perfect. So, the measurement instructions that Flow Mountain Bike gave were just precise: if you have at least the following measurements, the M size is perfect for you: height 175cm, inseam 80cm and saddle height 70cm.
Do you think the 2020 is worth the extra dollars over the previous al model?
Having ridden both, I'd say absolutely.
The suspension on the new Neuron is A LOT better than the previous model. Aside from the packaging improvements, the new suspension design is more supple and it has much better support through the mid-stroke and ending-stroke, giving it a stable feel that keeps it more planted on the descents.
In comparison, the old Neuron AL tended to blow through its travel far too easily. You can either add more air pressure or fit larger volume spacers into the rear shock, but it then makes the suspension feel too firm and unresponsive on smaller bumps. I really didn't like the suspension on the old Neuron AL.
The other thing to note is that the new frame is 1X specific. The main pivot is significantly wider to increase strength and bearing durability, but it also means that the anti-squat can be more finely tuned around a single chainring, rather than two chainrings like the old bike. The result is more efficiency, that still feels neutral when you're pedalling through the chop.
Overall the new Neuron AL pedals and handles better thanks to the improved suspension performance.

I stand at 175cm and have been riding the Medium, which fits pretty well, but it does have a long seat tube and means the minimum saddle height is still a little bit tall for me. Given you're 5cm shorter than me, and assuming your legs are shorter too, then you'd struggle to fit the Medium. Hope that helps! [Wil]

I think they put 174 whith 84 minimum.. just because of the seat tube.. that you canot use perfectly the droper poste like Wil says

It sounds like you're right on the edge with the Medium frame size. It will basically come down to your saddle height (measure between the BB and the top-middle of the saddle). If your saddle height is 70cm or more, the Medium will be fine. If it's less than 70cm though, you won't fit the Medium unless you change to a shorter dropper post, or something with adjustable travel - like a OneUp.
