Spear Guns for Home Defense?

  • Home defense is important for many people. Those who live in the US have the advantage that they can easily obtain firearms for the purpose, but in most other countries that is a not an option, due to strict weapon laws.
Spear guns are usually seen as a sports instrument rather than a weapon, and therefore they are legal even in some of the most restrictive countries. Well, what can kill a fish can probably also be effective against human intruders - so spear guns might be a viable option for self defense.
This video is a (non sponsored) review about two different models, both about 50 cm long. Both are made by Cressi, one of the leading manufacturers. One model is powered by rubber, the other one by compressed air.
How will these devices perform against an archery mat and ballistic gelatin? What is the effective range? Can they be "souped up" for more power?
    This video has the answers.

March 13, 2019, two students entered a school in São Paulo, Brasil, with a revolver and a crossbow, machetes and throwing knives. They killed 10 peole, all with the gun, bought ilegally with the numbers ground out. One of them was 17, the other 25 years old, minimum legal age to buy a gun. But the media is bitching about the fact that "crossbows can be bought from the internet by anyone". They didn't care much for the fact that one of those kids was raised by his grandma, had no father and a drug addict mother, and was been bullied spitless in the school. I don't know about the other, didn't pay much attention to that actually, i have more important stuff to do. But yes, if you write a hate message on a wall, they want to ban spray cans. They're that bright.

  • @ThumpertTheFascistCottontail

If you're going to fire a speargun when you're not underwater, make sure you remove the tether that attaches the spear to the speargun. If you don't, the spear can come back at you when it reaches the end of the tether.

health and safety laws are pretty over-zealous, but i think it's wise to have restrictions on firearms. anything else is pretty fair game though; slingshots, crossbows, catapults, scimitars, battleaxes, i think the line should be if it's non-concealable, and requires a certain amount of skill and ability to use (such as the strength needed to cock a spear gun), since firearms are pretty easy to accidentally kill someone with.

Passing gun control and anti-gun laws because of gun accidents or even crime is like banning vaccines because you don't like the sting of the needle. Guns are used to PREVENT crime almost infinitely more than they are used in crime, not counting the innumerable other peaceful uses of guns.

      WestcoastWheelman
i'd like a source for that, and really there should be no accidents at all, but in any case it's not just about the accidents, it would make intentional deaths much less common also, it's a lot harder to use other means of weaponry to kill someone than it is to just shoot them with a gun. i didn't say anything about bans, i said restrictions are wise, the US is much too liberal with their gun control. for guns at least i would say Germany is very fair with it's gun laws, it allows people to have basically whatever they want, but doesn't lack safety protocol like the US.

    Mr. Sprave,
The compressed air speargun you used is sealed, in other words it does not loose air pressure when shot. It works by compressing a piston when the spear shaft is loaded. These type of speargun usually ship pressurized from the factory and I think that's why it was difficult for you to pressurize again using the hand pump. I think that you may have doubled the safe working pressure of the speargun. This is a very dangerous situation and I recommend purging all the pressure out of the speargun and pressurizing it again to the manufacturers specifications. I own these types of spearguns and I use the pump maybe once a year as some air may seep out due to heavy use and old seals.

LMAO Joerg YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUMP IT UP TO RELOAD IT WTF!!!!
The air does not escape when you fire it. When you put the spear in, it pushes back a piston which moves forward again when you shoot it. The air slowly leaks out over a very long time, you can fire it hundreds of times without having to pump it.
I'm worried that you overpressurized that speargun, I can't imagine the pressure in there when you pumped it up when it was fully pumped from the beginning.

I actually use LEGO bricks as home defense. I have them placed around my home, and only I and other residents of my home know where they are. I've installed X-Acto blades and other sharp spikes into them to provide a bit of puncturing power if the intruder wears boots or shoes. Without the blades or spikes, LEGO bricks are still powerful items for home defense, but they don't just get the job done without them.

pneumatic doesn't require pumping after every shot, it doesn't lose pressure when you shoot. The air inside does not escape. The pump is for times when you bleed air out of the back valve for a lower pressure or maintanance (changing worn out o rings) which is about maybe once every other year. On the other hand you will wear out the o rings very quickly if you shoot it out of the water. There are some pneumatics that are designed to shoot out of water but they are very rare like the mares bazooka.

6:00 You could add one of the CO2 canisters with a valve to the gas operated one. Open a valve, equalize pressure, close the valve, load the spear, a helluva lot faster than manually pumping the damn thing.

Joerg the hole at the muzzle end is to add another round band for added power. So the other notch on the shaft is for the second band. That's why there's two notches on the shaft. The wishbone that hooks to the shaft from the rubber band doesn't need to be metal. We here in Hawaii don't normally use metal wishbones because they are to loud under water. We use a strong cord of about 4 inches long with a knot tied at each end. Push the knot into the band far enough so you can tie a holding knot with something similar to dental floss but thicker and also waxed like dental floss. Tie about 15 to 20 knot to hold in place. Also can't wait to see what you have in store for the next video.Aloha, Nate.

My friend, I really appreciate this video. Everyone has the natural right to defend their home and their family. The spear gun is a good option to be honest. It will certainly stop an intruder, and may have the advantage of being less lethal (thereby shielding the defender from prosecution). Only problem is it takes a while to reload, so your first shot has to count. I just hope that the megalomaniacs in government don't get the idea to now ban spear guns in your country.
As an American I will say that the ability to defend your home and family is a consequence of the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. However, that is not the primary purpose of that amendment. Really, it is to hold the government always at the risk of revolution if it tramples on the natural rights of the people.

Hello there ! İ am a big fun of slingshots and catapults and watched all of your videos, told my friends about your channel too:) so as i can see you are very open to your subscribers demends and ideas; so i've came up with and idea. My idea for you to test is a slingshot that shots a second slingshot which is preloaded that releases its load at end of the first slingshots muzzle when it is at its highest speed by a mechanism which i am sure you'll figure out how, in order for the second slingshot to shoot correctly the 2nd slingshot should be going in some sort of rail mounted on the largest slingshot. İ am sure that it'll be interesting to see on slow motion a slingshot shot by an other larger one reaching these high speeds and also shooting maybe a marble or bb, and theoreticaly since the small slingshot will already be at a high speed right before it shoots its load the acutal shot of the bb from the 2nd slingshot would be super fast and powerful ! Looking forward to see it!:)

I do spearfishing allot and have to say:
    1) You don't have to pump pneumatic gun after each shoot, but shooting it out of the water is definitely damaging the gun.
2)There is much better ways to do sling speargun stronger:
a)There is special hole in front of the "barrel", throw that hole you can add another sling.
b)Existing sling can be made shorter, or replaced buy more powerful sling (20 mm sling)

warning shots are a mistake. if someone is in your house and stealing or intending to do harm, they're fair game. two shots would be better for the chance for a follow up shot in case the first missed or was ineffective.

    @bbroogs Před 8 lety +19

No offense Joerg, but it's quite dangerous to condone warning shots, both legally and "tactically".
    Legally--
1.) In many countries/states, firing a weapon as a threat is illegal unless you are in direct fear for your life. Your ability and decision to fire a warning shot can legally put this direct fear in question. In the US, classes teach not to use your weapon unless you mean to kill, because anything less does not require it and will become increasingly more difficult to defend in a court of law. That's not something you want trouble defending. Everyone should know their local laws and learn what they mean in practical situations.
2.) It's difficult or impossible for many people to fire a warning shot in a safe direction in their living situation. You are legally and morally responsible for the warning bullet you put into the baby's crib down the street, or shot in the air and landed in someone's yard.
    Tactically--
You've now missed on purpose, and Johnny-meths-a-lot might just start shooting with HIS gun. Now you're in a gunfight, maybe with your family in the house on top of it. You've also wasted ammunition, which is catastrophic in a weapon that has low capacity. If you use 1 out of your 2 shots to warn someone trying to hurt or kill you, you're in for a very bad time. You should ALWYAS have a flashlight to ID the person, and know whether it's the drunk college kid walking into the wrong house, or Johny-meths-a-lot with a .45 in his hand. Option A. doesn't get shot at all, while option B. doesn't get a warning shot at all.
