The argument goes on and on, who is the best stand up comedian. Then you watch Billy and realise the real argument is who is the second best.
I'm an older glasgow woman and everything Billy says and his stories are all absolutely true . BRILLIANT ❤🏴🏴
I saw him three times and as an Englishman 🏴 I have to say Billy is the funniest man I've ever seen!
Our British comedians are the best .
my late mother who would have been 100 this year loved Billy's stand up.. she said she felt he was the sort of person if he turned up at the house you would have a very good time sitting in the kitchen having a cup of tea and chatting with him. He comes across as able to communicate well with everyone. He gave the impression in his stand up, interviews and tv programmes as if we all knew him. He was the only person she ever let off swearing as well.. she liked him that much. lol.
@@mariahoulihan9483 She obviously knew what she was talking about!
The whole point of these 'An Audience With' performances was that a lot of celebrities from the era would be invited. A lot you won't recognise as the were UK specific such as a national weather girl, soap star actor. Neither would you be likely to recognise some of the sport stars.
Amongst those I would think you may recognise through films and TV are (Haven't watched whole video yet so you may mention later); Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid in Harry Potter), Julie Walters (Mrs Weasley in Harry Potter), Roy Kinnear (Violet's father in the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder) & Barbara Bach (Russian agent triple X in 007 The Spy Who Loved Me and also Ringo's wife).
This for me was one of the top 2 'An Audience With' shows with An Audience with Victoria Wood also being hilarious!
It's a bit distracting, watching famous people laughing when we should be concentrating on Billy.
These days, when we watch, we try to guess which ones are alive or dead.
Was it me or did I see Ringo Star himself, Rick Parfitt from Status Quo and a young Jamie Oliver?
And the late, great Clive James
One of our famous actors, the late great Tim Pigott-Smith sat next to Robbie Coltrane is there too. He has me in stitches because he was laughing so hard he looked exhausted, like he'd gone 10 rounds with Muhammad Ali! 🤣
Yep and BobGeldorf
Widely considered to be one of the greatest single stand-up comedian nights ever
I disagree

@@papalaz4444244 and you based that on what?
@@papalaz4444244 Let's go heat up some pennies 😅
Well here I think (Scotland) for past wee while is the legend who is Kevin bridges who has become the favourite
I served my shipyard apprenticeshp with billy,if he watched a movie the night before you never needed to go to the cinema billy could tell you and describe it from start to finish.
The first time I went to see Billy in concert, I spent so long laughing I had to leave for a while because my face hurt so much, and to this day I can still remember a lot of the jokes. The funniest man I ever saw.
Yip his records years ago the banana boots gig 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂😂😂
An Audience with was an excellent series of shows. My favourite and suggestion for pure brilliance is An Audience with Peter Ustinov, he was just spectacularly entertaining and engaging.
Ustinov was simply incredible. One of the most amazing story tellers we've ever had
The Victoria Wood one is also excellent for completely different reasons. Total reverse, as tightly scripted as Peter's was meandering 👌
As another American online commentator once said, "You've never been told to f*** off until a British person has told you to f*** off!" - Absolutely true! 🤣
I've always considered that particular F OFF at 29:27 to be one of the most satisfying/cathartic ones I've ever heard..!
Erm Billy Is Scottish same as myself
@@sharonkelly4453 Which also makes him British, as Scotland is part of Great Britain along with Wales and England.
@@lucretialee3691 Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, Britain was an empire. Other peoples nationality is NOT for YOU to decide. They said they were Scottish, not Brittish. THEIR choice, respect it.
@@TheJpf79 Go get a geography class, and a map.
Great Britain is the name of the landmass (island) that Scotland, England and Wales are on. It has nothing to do with politics, nations and so on, they are British just because they live on the British Isles.
If someone want's to call themselves by the country within they were born it's fine, but that doesn't change the fact they are also British.
Robbie Coltrane loved Billy. All you can hear is his cackle all the way through. RIP Robbie xx
Him and Gerry Rafferty were the Humblebums. My mum was 16 worked in music shop they'd go in. They were always stoned. Mum having no clue being just moved from Highlands thought....oooh what lovely friendly men lol
Mum before 16?yep sounds scottish🤗

So glad to watch this again, with you both. God Bless Billy, he is a treasure. His enthusiasm for all aspects of life is what drew me to him. His gifts including humour (of course!), kindness, and versatility, are amazing. In other words, i just love our 'big yin'. I 1st saw this show when i was 18 & i laughed so much i nearly needed those incontinence trousers!!!😂😂😂❤
The best thing about watching Billy is how much fun he is having.
If you havent, you HAVE to watch The Man Who Sued God.
Billy Connely was absolutely brilliant in that!!
❤❤❤❤❤
Billy Connolly
@cherzo71 good for you champ
One of the things I've always loved about watching the original version of this is seeing so many celebrities who usually acted so strait-laced on TV, the type of people you'd never think would like Billy Connolly's material, absolutely pissing themselves.
I never knew there was a 90 minute version of this out there, only ever seen a version that was about 50 minutes long. What a treat 👍
Yeah,the Q &A bit wasn't on tv
@@gordonp3139yes it was
@@ginacable5376 When? I've only ever seen the one-hour version on TV.
I have the DVD Version. Well worth it ! 🇦🇺
billy connolly is the best stand up comedian in UK. Great channel lads
Billy is hilarious n I’ve watched it so much since it was on the telly in ‘85.. billy literally makes me cry laughin’😂😂
When Billy passes away, there needs to be. Commemorative Bicycle rack shaped like an arse striking out the ground. - if you know. You know😂
The theme from The Archers (a long-running radio soap opera) is a tune called 'Barwick Green'.
One of the all time great comedy shows.
An audience with stars of telly and music etc and is a thing that would happen every year with different ‘star’ every time…. Billy Connelly is an absolute icon I love him
An amazing Billy Connolly performance. Great reaction!
Remember this from a kid, crying with laughter and the faces in the audience bring back so many memories.
"An Audience With...." was a series of shows done by London Weekend Television (LWT) and featured a guest audience who would ask questions.
QVC - Quality Value Convenience (it is none of those things). We also have the channel in the UK.
Not only is billy a great comedian but a great banjo player a great actor and singer he is also a documentarian on British tv
Billy goes into a show with only a rough outline of what he is going to talk about. 99 percent is improvised on the spot. The man is gold.
Sir Billy and Lady Connolly live on your side of the pond the majority of the year, he's drawing, painting and fishing, his wife used to act and trained as a physiologist, written a book or possibly two on her husband
I think you'll find that's psychologist.
Her first biography of him is fantastic
As various people have said, the entire audience was celebrities. IMDB has a fairly comprehensive list.
I remember watching the audience with, in my younger years. Billy Connelly was one of my favourites to do the audience with. Most of the audience were famous, ranging from actors to news readers.
I remember watching this when it first aired when I was about 11. I’ve never laughed so hard, he’s the King!
We had a stereo linked up to the tv & I got my dad to record it onto a cassette for me so I could listen to it in my room. We only had 1 tv in those days. I know this routine word for word and it’s still gold.
I remember watching this live - the best performance ever still makes me cry in laughter today :)
Aye, the whole front section of the audience were/are celebs back in the 80s. I remember watching this as a kid & it still makes me crack up! Legend
Just about everyone who appears in the audience is extremely famous. Spot a Beatle, Rolling Stones, couple of Status Quo, Hazel O'Connor, TV presenters, male & female weather forecasters, actors and actresses, footballers, comentators, great comedians etc etc
Sadly, half of that audience has passed away . I was little when this was made, and I'm now in my mid 40's .
Roger Taylor from Queen in there also.
Many UK Saints and Sinners - Bob Hoskins, Joanna Lumley, Michael Parkinson & wife, Valerie Singleton, Angela Rippon, Ringo, Boxer Barry McGuigan, The wonderful Roy Kinnear, Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt from Status Quo. Ian ST James Scots football pundit. Jimmy Tarbuck, Sir Bob and muse Paula Yates, Clive James, Julie Waters, Bob Carolgees and Chris Tarrant - all in the first 5 minutes. Loads more throughout
It’s Ian St John, not James. Denis Law was there too, the camera cut to him after his name was mentioned. Barbara Dickson as well.
Pretty sure Nigel Planner is there too, from The Young ones
Roger Taylor (Queen) Robert Plant & Jimmy Page (Led Zep) Bill Wyman (Stones) Charles Dance (Game of Frogs).
Exactly one week ago I was talking to a friend about finding a boyfriend as a senior citizen. He asked what I was looking for and I immediately said "Billy Connolly". Adorable, Scottish and funny - the ultimate combo!
The Territorial Army are the Reservists.....the US equivalent would be the National Guard
You should watch an audience with Lilley Savage, its Brilliant 😂 .
RIP. Paul O'Grady.
It’s funny to think that bloke the camera zooms in on at 20:20 is more famous than everyone else in the room put together.
If you liked this, you HAVE to watch "Two Night Stand". By FAR my favourite comedy standup performance I have ever listened to. The bit about the christmas dinner always had me rolling with laughter. Billy is an absolute genius at setting the scene, and describing everyone to a tee. Well worth the watch, even if you don't do a reaction to it.
I was a teenager in the sixties and loved it...the fashion, haircut, music, it was all brilliant
Great video. Billy Connolly (The Big Yin) is the best. He grew up 10 miles from me. I remember seeing this video on tv in the 80's. I was 14 when this came out. Great memories 😂😂😂 🏴
Hi guys, brilliant reaction. Billy Connolly makes me proud to be Scottish. If you want to continue with Billy I recommend him on the late late show with Craig Ferguson.
Probably the best of the audience with I remember watching this one when it first broadcast
Well, there goes all my other plans for the next 2hrs
Rikki Fulton is another Scottish Glaswegian outstanding comedian. Sadly missed. Every Hogmany with Scotch & Wry(instead of Rye). Billy is amazing ,to have seen him in Glasgow performing live is one of the best night's out! Proud to be a Weegie!
Everyone in the audience are celebrities- that’s why this series was called an audience with ! = status quo - world champion Barry mcguigan- Parkinson footballers + managers - singers - presenters- comedians - ect .
The Australian that asked the question from the audience, is the inimitable Clive James. He became an honorary Brit, as he spent so long in the UK, and had several very popular tv series as well as being an accomplished author. Not seen much of his stuff on YT as his time predates the internet by at least a decade, but if you can find any of his stuff, it is worth a look.
His show used to feature the weird and wacky from around the world, such as Japanese game shows, and a remarkably bad South American singer called Margarita Pragatan, who he regularly featured and interviewed. Back then it was compulsive viewing.
This is one of my favourite videos you’ve ever done. I was 19 when this was made and it brought back memories. Thanks guys ❤
Billy started as a folk the club circuit in Scotland and the little chit chats inbetween the songs gradually got longer and longer as he had the audience rolling in the aisles. He's a talented musician and now acto too !
I saw Billy 3 times in the 80's and once in the 90's. Incredibly funny, the best standup ever.
Been a fan since the 70,s when I saw him in the Glasgow Apollo theatre. He was just starting out and the funniest person I had ever seen. Nothings changed he still is.we need to see the funny in ordinary life, billy is the master in that, thank you for appreciating him ❤
BC is the undisputed King of stand-up comedy…the rest are all just playing catch-up. If you’ve never watched his take on “incontinence pants” you haven’t lived! Still cracks me up 40 years later, and I know it word for word!
Roger Taylor & a Rolling stone? They were great shows. Enjoyed seeing it again & watching you two react. 💜🏴🌻
The audience was full of celebrities and sadly a lot of them are no longer with us. The big yin forever.
You do hear Father Jack, don't forget Billy is Scottish but his family were Irish immigrants.
Yes, true. But the Irish were Scottish immigrants from centuries ago, they’re all Celtic people.
Woke hubby up laughing………now he’s laid watching with me……year’s since we’ve seen this,,,,,a lot of those celebs have passed sadly…
He’s the greatest stand up comedian ever imo. And a great man,
This was one of a series of “An Audience With….”, where stars of film, TV, sport were invited along with the public to a show by a high profile comedian or singer
This was an all celebrity audience - the An Audience With series in the UK features a performer playing to a crowd of celebrities and this was one of the earliest episodes. Amongst the celebrities were Ringo Starr, Bob Hoskins and Robbie Coltrane
The actor that played Detective Eddie Valiant from Who Framed Roger Rabbit was Robert William Hoskins - aka Bob Hoskins. Yes, he was a brilliant actor. We lost him about 10 years ago after a career spanning over 50 movies, most of which were successful films. I loved his portrayal of Khrushchev in Enemy at the Gates.
"An Audience with..." shows are basically all celebrities. Brits of a certain gen will know all of them.
one of the best stand ups ever
An audience with....was indeed a series of specials in which comedians and singers or actors would do a show in front of an invited audience of british celebrities and field questions from the audience. A great one to watch , for Americans, is the one Mel brooks did...Its bloody hilarious!
My brother and i had this on Vidio, when we moved to posh Surrey England from near Glasgow were we grew up. We had a huge culture shock, Cristmas bfast outsid OMG. So we played this to every English fiend, to make us feel normal. Stu and i still this off by hart, hochober, henna, hanara, a great line.
"vidio" "Cristmas" "outsid" "fiend" "by hart"
The big slipper was a real thing! We also have QVC here.
Thats an A-List of cellebrities from the 80's football players to hosts to even the weather girl lol billy weas the best grew up watching this never ages
Iv watched this countless times and I still cry with laughter 🌹🇬🇧🌹
And to think that this was in the 80's! Still "stands-up" to today!
yes billy was a folk singer at one time, the humblebums.
Reminds me of a building site I worked on. A few young lads worked there, wearing baseball hats. One guy used to always ask them "where do you get those baseball hats with the peak at the back?" 😆
There's bill Wyman of the stones and Roger Taylor, drummer of Queen in that audience too
IMBD: Seen among the audience are Robbie Coltrane, Julie Walters, Charles Dance, Bob Hoskins, Michael Brandon, Glynis Barber, Michael Parkinson, Roger Taylor, Nigel Planer, Brian Glover, Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Bob Geldof, Paula Yates, Joanna Lumley, Clive James, Bill Wyman, Samantha Fox, Denis Law, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Kenny Everett and Sara Dallin - amongst others.
So wonderful to see more of the younger generations discovering and loving Billy! I've followed him for over 40 years and he and Robin Williams are the two funniest human beings to have graced our planet.
He'll have you crying 😂😂😂
Billy Connolly is one of those rare comedians who make you sick laughing. He's so infectious.
We don't swear in Scotland, it's punctuation.
Billy will always be the greatest comedian.gerry cinnamon wasnt born but his mum was.she went to see billy in concert.unforgettable x
I'm *just* old enough to remember seeing this at the time, and obviously it got replayed (on VHS) quite a few times in our house.
One of my favourite comedians. And all-time great.
I would recommend checking out Billy's stand-up shows "Two Night Stand". "Live 2002", and his World Tour of Australia series.
Most of the cast of Harry Potter are in this audience.
Then again, the Harry Potter series had most of the top British actors in it. lol
(and this audience really was a who's-who of great actors, sports people, and business people from back then.)
58:51 - Julie Walters. She played Molly Weasley.
59:37 - The late Sir Clive Sinclair. Creator of the ZX Spectrum, and other computers which were instrumental in helping create the modern games industry in the UK and elsewhere.
1:00:18 - The late Bob Hoskins. He played "Smee" in the 1991 Peter Pan movie "Hook", and he played Mario in the 1993 Mario Bros movie.
1:00:27 - The late Brian Glover. An American Werewolf in London, Alien 3 etc.
1:00:33 And of course, the late Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), who we lost just over a year ago.
I'll try to be a bit more positive next time I post a reply. lol
1:01:23 - Michael Elphick (The Elephant Man, Boon, Eastenders, Coronation Street). I'm kind of sort of related to him.
He's my sister's ex-husbands half-Brother, or something. lol
I love the 'An audience with ........... ' shows, they always have the funniest comedians !
Yes the audience with series yeah i think this is top closely followed by the victoria wood one. You should definitely check the Victoria wood one. And her other stuff like the tv series Victoria wood as seen on TV and dinnerladies there both brilliant.
Rare to see the full version of the Audience with show thanks lads
He was in a band called the Humble Bums with Gerry Rafferty
So funny you had it on fast mode! I was thinking that Billy must have done coke before he went on, LMAO.
Billy was in a folk group, played the banjo. His most famous song as far as I know, was If I didnae have ma feet in ma wellies. I love it. :) Hot pennies - before the days of Health and Safety. LOL.The Scots and the Irish can be very similar, and historically they've moved backwards and fowards. Many Irish came to Britain for work and many Scots were sent to Northern Ireland. The "Audience With" series had an audience made up of other celebrities who pretty much all know each other. Hey, I was born in '44 and am very computer and internet savvy. But then Billy is of my generation too. :)
The crowd is basically everyone famous or semi famous on british tv at the time.
Billy is the greatest story teller of all time, you can picture everything he tells you,😆😆😆👍🏼🏴
This was the show that introduced me to BC - I remember watching it the night it was broadcast - I was 12 😂😂❤ it was part of the Audience With series - filmed in front of British celebs - ones you may recognise include Ringo, Roger from Queen, Status Quo, Bob Hoskins, Robbie 'Hagrid' Coltrane and Julie Walters amongst lots more ❤️🇬🇧 📺
You might be interested in the "Audience with" Aussies.
When Billy performed his stand up shows here in Melbourne he also did a TV Interview Show where the Aussie Audience asks the questions. Its in 3 parts. 🇦🇺
My granny is well onto her 80s. Even though I'm the odd ball black sheep of the family she is always in my corner backing me up when things get a bit wrong. Even though I'm 40 years old she puts a couple of hundred in my birthday and Christmas cards. There's always a little note saying "DO NOT USE THIS MONEY TO PAY BILLS".
Billy and his Banjo playing came along in due course
" How did you find things back then " ....... WE SPOKE TO EACH OTHER ! 🤣🤣🤣 Radical , I know but it worked for us 😁😄
THE best stand up show of all time! Also, check out an Audience with Freddie Starr and for sheer story telling, An Audience with Peter Ustinov.
It is a little known fact that the theme from The Archers was produced by George Martin, several years before The Beatles came along.
My second favourite comedian of all time next to Bill Hicks, but this is my favourite stand up show that I have ever seen
Billy was, is and always will be the best. Maybe you should look at 'An audience with Lily Savage' for a very different evening !!
Excellent Father Jack impression !!!!
For a great Bob Hoskins film to add to your lists try "the long good Friday" A top notch gangster movie.
Peach Schnapps and Vodka, together in the same glass is phenomenal, as the vodka dampens down some of the sweetness of the schnapps, and the schnapps takes some of the sharpness away from the vodka... Don't forget the ice. Try it some day, you won't be disappointed. It's even when you mix Malibu and Vodka.
When he talks about his father in this (mainly because he didn't talk about it until way after this was made) what he doesn't mention is that his father both physically and sexually abused him. There is a Parkinson interview that was on YT where him and his wife (Pamela Stephenson), who was a comedian but became a psychologist, talk to Parkinson about it. Although it is a very serious subject, it is still a funny interview.
Someone uploaded a programme from Channel 4 in the UK called "Shrink Rap" where his wife Pamela would have a TV therapy session with famous celebs including one with Billy and they talked about the terrible abuse he was subjected to by his Father and it was only till after his Dad died that he told his family about it. Really interesting interview.
Billy was in a group called the Humblebums with Gerry Rafferty of Baker Street fame
