  • Replacing the OME headlights with aftermarket LED's on a Polaris Sportsman 500 and similar. Pretty simple upgrade. Replacement bulbs are spendy, and some hard to find. Heres a more economical solution. This machine had the 4030058 bulbs which are $25+ per bulb. This upgrade could be done 3 x's for that price and they'll be brighter. The lights come in a few versions. 30 degree and 60 degree, I went with the 30 which is a more focal spot light at distance. The 60 degree is more of a flood light. I believe you can also get them in an Amber vs the white light I went with. Also many other brands and shapes. Pretty satisfied with them so far. If you found this of interest. Check out the channel and playlists for all the other Polaris related videos as well as other topics. And if you find them of value feel free to SUBSCRIBE. More to come. Thanks for watching.

      Nice. You like em? Many options. I looked around online for quite a while before deciding on these. I had history with the brand and the price was right. Im kind of surprised there isn't a set available that are the same in LED that you'd just swap out. Or Bulbs readily available. You can find bulbs but few and far between. And ... spend. Compared to the price of the lights I used. But it is what it is. Hope they work for you as you wish and last a long long time.

      I really couldn't say. I went with look. Brand familiarity. Ive used this brand on a motor home/toy hauler for ramp lights. Still kicking. And of course price. For the price they'd be no big loss if they let me down. They seem built pretty solid. I think my main concern would be water tightness.

    Question after this upgrade this affect your taillights from working? Or is the wiring of the taillight different from the front ?

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648  Před 2 lety

      To the best of my knowledge it didn't and shouldn't have any affect on the taillight. That wiring should be isolated from the head light and its controls. Did you have an issue your trying to sort out?

    Really like the look of those lights,. I have a 1998 polaris xplorer 300 4x4 and unfortunately mine has a 3 pin connector. Assuming because of mine having a high/low beam. Was wondering if they make your style of light in a 3 pin. Thank you for your time.

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648  Před rokem +1

      I believe they do. In the video I talk a little about making sure you confirm which you have 2 or 3 pin/wire. When I was exploring options I saw both. Im not sure if this particular light is available in both though. This is the link for the ones I used but it should get you where you need to be to explore more. amzn.to/33LNwXu Just to clarify I have a two way switch high/low as well. For mine its the LEDS that are my normal running lights or lows. But at this point they're really highs because of the brightness. And my top single handlebar light comes on when I change to high beam. All three are on at that point. But not much change because the LED's overpower the top one. I just have the OEM bulb in the top. For now anyway. Hope that helps.

      All u need to do is take a test light and see which wire is for ur low beam and which wire is for ur high beam then just choose which wire u want to use to hook up any aftermarket led light bar. Also they make aftermarket led bulbs that will replace ur stock bulbs. On ur lights as long as u don't have any problem with being too bright u can use either ur low beam wire or ur high beam wire. If u need to have a low beam light just buy an aftermarket led replacement bulb (not a Polaris bulb because they are too overpriced and are very dim) then if u want even more light add on a led light bar just shop around and find a better m9re brighter and more responsibly priced one unlike the ones in this video. Also do not cut ur factory plugs off just use wire taps to tap into ur wires.

      Mmmm. Id have to dig into that a little. But I will say it will only work one way. And as I demonstrated in the video, no harm came to the lights wiring them backwards. They just won't work. Thats one of the beauties of LED's in this application anyway.

    I replaced my top light with an LED bulb and I replaced the bottom 2 lights with LEDs similar to yours. I was wondering if it's possible to wire up the switch so you can have all 3 on at same time when you put the switch all the way up. Would that be to much of an overload and if not do you know how I would do that?

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648  Před rokem +1

      Im thinking that its controlled by the switch. And if the switch does not do that already, there may be a way to somehow over ride that or rewire it but Im not electrically savvy enough to talk you through that here. I do know some switches just do that so there may be a switch option if its something you really want to pursue. That was something that got my attention at first as well. But most of the time in AK lights are a non issue until the fall for me and I really haven't noticed a functional need for all three.

    • @ericinalaska7648

      I do not. The bulbs were missing on the machine when I acquired it. But the proper replacements were single filament. On mine when I position the switch on low the LEDS or the previous original lights come/came on. In the High position the headlamp on the handlebars comes on. I believe that's the difference between some having a 3 pin connector and a 2 pin connector. Mine has the 2 pin.

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648  Před 2 lety

      I may be wrong but my understanding is that with the 3 wire set ups. You have a brights setting on your head lights. Meaning the lower two. Does yours? On mine the brights or high beam is just the center handlebar head light. The lower two only have one setting on mine. So if that's the case with yours. You'd need to get a replacement with 3 wires. If that's not the case let me know. I can dig deeper. Or if anyone else reading this has any input.

    Your Polaris content is terrific and could only be improved if you let your typed messages within the video persist about three times longer. I can’t process your in-video comments that fast especially when you’re talking as I’m trying to read.

    • @ericinalaska7648

      First of all thank you for the encouraging words. Yah in a lot of my earlier videos as I would edit I would commonly feel something needed additional info and would edit the comments in. Trying to cover as much as pos. It's always a concern to not let them linger too long, to not distract too much from the talking vs long enough to read. I try to keep it down. Always room to grow of course. If you're watching one and you find it too quick, you can hit the space bar to pause. As far as money? At this point commercials run on the videos throw a few pennies at me per view. Hasn't been my primary motive but who knows. When I retire maybe it'll add up to something. I have a few videos in the works currently. Ive had a few requests for doing a coolant change, and I was planning to do one just kind of identifying parts, function, and locations. Just working out how detailed I want to be with that. I also just finished a project making a large two pc concrete slab BBQ island counter top. Unrelated but I plan to weave that in here in the near future as well once the editing is done. Lots of balls in the air currently though.Thanks again for the feedback and words of encouragement.

    There are aftermarket replacement led bulbs for ur stock headlights. I just bought a pair for less than $10 for my Polaris. Also they make aftermarket led light bars that will fit ur space on ur Polaris much better and are way brighter than the ones I bought. Also u over paid for the led lights u bought. Also insteade of cutting ur factory plugs u should have just used wire tappers to tap into ur wires. Also never buy Polaris bulbs or oil filters for ur Polaris because they over price all their stuff and on the oil filters other companies like STP, Wix, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Napa, Caltric, K&N, etc make much better oil filters compared to the Polaris filters. Wix makes all the O'Reilly and Napa filters just fyi.
    Just trying to help u out....

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648  Před rokem

      No worries thanks. Yah the bulbs available at the time were very limited and as I discussed in the video what I paid for the lights I decided on I could replace the entire thing withe the ones I used a few times if needed for cheaper than the proper bulb replacement. I was unable to find any LEDS that weren't $$$ at the time and or were currently unavailable. Im mainly just sharing an option with folks and how it looks and can be done. I would imagine over time LEDS keep getting less and less expensive. If you watch my oil change video you'll see I use a NAPA gold and talk about some of the same stuff you mentioned. With that in mind if your under warranty, as expensive as there stuff is you'll want to use it because it will void your warranty if you don't. Otherwise like you mentioned, its common to use other regularly. The wiretaps Im not 100% but I believe those are for dry and more of an "indoor" use application like say under the dash of your car or vehicle and such. At least the ones I have/had. I have used them in a pinch for convenience and speed on trailer light scenarios and such but I find and am of the mindset that there a bit problematic in wet applications and moving parts such as bouncing wires and such. Also harder to get the right size shrink wrap over a smaller wire and the bulky tapper. They probably don't need shrink wrap but. So I chose what I consider to be a more durable less potential for repairs route. Ive always used those in a situation where I didn't have the time and or the tools to do it another way. I find joining the wires vs. splicing into one to be more reassuring. Thats all.
      Anyway. Thank you for the input. Always helpful for others to hear different options and points of view.

    you can destroy the leds if you connect them backwards

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648  Před 2 lety

      Hey their Tim. My limited understanding of the topic and research indicates they just won't work if they're wired backwards. As demonstrated. I'm confident there are scenarios it could have a problematic outcome. Most of the issues Ive found involved unregulated voltage lacking a voltage regulator or resistor when wired properly. Im certainly always open to learning of course. And if you have info or experience you can share please do. Its always helpful for other viewers. The goal is always to have accurate info for people. Below is a statement from one of many search results indicating similar claims that got me where I am on it.
      1) Polarity Matters
      In electronics, polarity indicates whether a circuit component is symmetric or not. LEDs, being diodes, will only allow current to flow in one direction. And when there's no current-flow, there's no light. Luckily, this also means that you can't break an LED by plugging it in backwards. Rather, it just won't work.

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648  Před 3 lety

      Yah, That was my original pursuit, but if you google a compatible LED replacement. At least at the time of making the video and for this year make and model. There was one (compatible) option that would come up that required enlarging the hole to accommodate the bulb. I would have considered it but it was out of stock when I was exploring options. And no estimated availability. Many other options came up but as Id look at them closer they were not the same or compatible. They had a different configuration. Either the pins (2 vs 3) or the molded body and how it mounts in the bezel was wrong. Then there is the price comparison of course. For some years, makes, and models. Absolutely. They're readily available. The original bulbs, Non LED, replacements for this particular year, make, and model are more expensive then the lights I ended up using. So I threw the dice after finally picking one out. I just thought Id share for anyone interested in an option.
