SCUMM VM on Nintendo 64 - Play classic point and click adventure games on your N64 console!

  • ScummVM on Nintendo 64 is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical adventure and role-playing games, provided you already have their data files and an everdrive 64 or other flashcart. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed like N64! ScummVM is a complete rewrite of these games' executables and is not an emulator.

    I’d be all in if we could get these games on repro carts that are just as plug and play as any other N64 cart. No muss no fuss. That would be EPIC. Still, this is very cool.

    • @KoopaMedia64
      @KoopaMedia64 Před 2 lety +2

      Only one problem, ScummVM 1.6.0 for N64 wasn't designed to save progress on the Everdrive 64 and as such doesn't work, so it also likely won't save on repro carts. You'd need an old copier like the Mr. Backup Z64 or Doctor V64 instead. Someone would have to update the N64 port of ScummVM 1.6.0 to support repro cart-compatible saving.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  Před 2 lety +3

      Technically repro carts can be done in minutes, the problem is saving as mentioned above but if there was enough interest in getting scumm team to update n64 to take into account more people wanting to play then maybe they could make it happen

    I'm a huge fan of point and click games. I grew up playing games like Monkey Island II: LeChuck's Revenge, Day Of The Tentacle, and Sam & Max Hit The Road. The same group of devs got together not too long ago and made a new game in that classic style; Thimbleweed Park. Great game and great callback to those originals. Been playing with ScummVM on my Android for a while now. Currently playing through Day Of The Tentacle again. I actually cast my screen to my Chromecast and use a USB mouse to play it.

  • @justanotheryoutubechannel

    Wow, this is such a crazy idea and it seems to look quite good already. I love these games but I don’t own an N64 so I probably won’t be trying this any time soon, although I will be trying all these on PC for sure.

    Definitely a big Scumm fan. Played the absolute F out of Monkey Island, Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle way back when. Oh and Indiana Jones of course. Lately I've also been trying to get into Loom but I think I need a bit more time with that one before I can really start to appreciate it. I was also pleasantly surprised that I didn't really know the games you showcased here all that well. I moved Flight of the Amazon Queen up higher on my to play list as a result. Flight of the Amazon Queen just baffled me as a kid. I was expecting a game like Fate of Atlantis but what I got was something that was just all over the place tone wise.
    I remember the game feeling more like a kids cartoon than a mature point and click like I wanted. I really should finish it.
