2019 Mercedes-Benz C-Class vs Acura TLX A-Spec // An Executive Decision.

  • The Mercedes C300 is very compelling. Luxurious, classy, and quick. But what if you want a bit more driving engagement? The Acura TLX A-Spec offers you some of that, for less money. So what's the catch?
Note: We did consider the ILX to go against this, but the TLX felt like the better fit and the extra power doesn't hurt!

Ash Moe I’ve been in both and they both drive very smooth and comfortable. Acura’s drive a little more sporty and fun, but Mercedes are way more luxurious feeling inside by a long shot. If I could get an Acura with Mercedes interior I’m sold.

@@AFCompany Nothing to do with interior. Mercedes has a better body structure, just like many other German competitors. Acuras do drive sporty and handle well, but it feels cheap. The structure isnt as solid and overall nvh isn't on par with the Germans. You can put an S class interior in that TLX and it will still drive like the glorified economy car that it is. I'd rather just get a civic instead of buying a wanna-be luxury car if I cant afford a real one.

Having driven these both and knowing them intimately well, aside from the prestige of the Mercedes, the TLX A-Spec offers so much more bang for the buck. I don’t understand why everyone is ragging on the interior of the Acura. I think the controls are very functional, flexible, and easy to navigate. I love the dual screens, and the ability to permanently display the map on one screen, while being able to simultaneously access other controls on the other one. And, I love the integrated look of the screens. IMO, the screen on the Mercedes looks kind of ghetto in comparison; it looks like someone just stuck it to the dash with Velcro or double sided tape, kind of like those Garmin devices we used to buy and attach to the dash in the days before cars had screens. I honestly expected more from a brand that promotes itself as one of the most luxurious brands in the industry. The silver buttons across the center look kind of like those buttons on cars from the 70s. Circular vents also look old fashioned to me. And, an analog clock? Now, that’s dated. Extras that come standard on the Acura cost additional on the Mercedes, making it very expensive. Furthermore, Mercedes become money pits in terms of repair costs shortly after the warranty expires, with the cost of parts through the roof. An extra $2000 for a feature where the Mercedes logo lights up a certain way when you open the door? What a pretentious brand.

Two pretty cool cars but if I were in the market for one of those I would take the TLX Aspec without a doubt.
Reliability from Acura/Honda is legendary. I wouldn’t say that the aspec is a legendary performer but between these two I would say it’s the most fun to drive. What they really need is a turbo V6 Type S version.
I am an original owner of a 2007 TL S 6 speed and never want to let it go, in my opinion it was the last sporty TL and better looking also but I have to say the new one is growing on me. Still needs a 6spd option though.

I own a European 2005 Honda Accord TypeS which is equivalent to Acura TSX in the US, and since I photograph cars, I drive different cars all the time, and my old "TSX" drives better than many many newer and more expensive cars. Unfortunatelly, we don't have Honda Accord in Europe anymore, but fortunatelly I'm moving to the US and this car is first on my list, SH-AWD V6 with all the package upgrades. Power is not an issue here, I plan to put in a supercharger and that will make 500hp for a fraction of the money other similar powered cars cost.

People never give Honda enough credit for SH-AWD. It was the first full-time all-wheel-drive system that could torque vector from front to back but also side to side in the rear wheels, all the way back in 2004.
People love to jerk off at Audi and Subaru’s awd system but don’t realize Audi didn’t add this technology until late 2000s and early 2010s on their top of the line S models only, and Subaru to this day doesn’t have torque vectoring in the rear via a differential, they use brakes to torque vector on the STI.
