So saying that British viceroy ordered for restoration process is just a gimmick.
everything the british did was a gimmick
I don’t like that his bias of being a brit makes him more cool about what the british did through the world with their empire, like yes, it’s badass to rule the world, but is it badass that it was done through conquest and annihilation? Im loving these older megaprojects. Some of the most iconic buildings ever created were long long before the industrial revolution. All the more impressive for that!
Fact: The Taj Mahal was actually built by the Mongols' (i.e., Mughals') not the Indians.
Something worth mentioning is that the emperor who commissioned the Taj Mahal wanted to have a identical one build on the opposite side of the river in black marble, however was imprisoned by his son before this could be achieved because of the economic concerns! Just imagine what the site would've been like! When i visited back in 2017 i was breath taken by it and would 100% recommend anyone to go there on a guided tour (pre-booked!)

I think there is a mistake at 10:20. Scaffolding of Taj during the war time is not because the government feared attack on Taj itself. All this happened pre-satelite navigation era. They feared large white structure like Taj may act like a light house which will help the bombers to identify the location during night raids.

“Today with our modern technology we strive for beauty and perfection but we still remain in the shadows of a Tomb build centuries ago with the help of elephants oxen.”
Powerful words indeed
It's more that no government or private organisation can justify the expense these days.
And dare I say it, may have been an issue back then too, hence Shah Jahan's overthrow by his own son.
No we do not. Developers today strive only for profit, something we can see everywhere in the destruction of cultural buildings and their replacement by the same steel and glass box structures everywhere. Just because it is a nice thought in the form of a balanced expression does not make the same true. The truth is often ugly.
@@baronburch6702 But there is a small but growing movement aiming to rectify our demolition frenzy and all of our sterile, samey and ugly modernist buildings spearheaded (at least in Europe and America) by the ICAA, INTBAU, Strong Towns and the New Urbansim movement as a whole much to the chagrin of the architectural elite. So there is hope yet.
And the Pyramids were built without them! It was the minds of men that made the difference and thousands of years of artistic evolution.

There are archeological evidence of a foundations of an a twin structure near Taj Mahal that was to be the tomb of the Emperor solely while the Taj Mahal would have been only for the wife.
The structure was to be same in every aspect with the exception of the marble which was to be black. The hypothesis are that the second structure was never completed due to economic reasons (no surprise there) or due to the passing of the emperor which prompted his successor to nope out of the project.
This is why the two coffins in the Taj are the only aspect of the building that are not symmetrical
Wow! I am amazed how correct and well versed you are about the sociopolitical situations of India.
A interesting fact : There has been a long standing theory that Shah Jahan wanted to Build a Black Taj mahal for himself just opposite the white one, but couldn't do so because his son imprisoned him and took away the throne

Shah Jahan was captured by his own son and was kept in a prison from where he can see taj mahal till his death.
the best thing about all these videos isn't that it gives information or historical context or even that you narrate with sophistication akin to David Attenborough (though everything is amazing and i am never disinterested) but it's the wondrous questions and implications at the end of the videos that not only suggest we're trying to cling on to past glory that will never come again, but also ask if it was worth it, if future generations will marvel at something we build now and say the same things, or if they'll scorn them and destroy what they don't understand.

It was not an occupation, it was a civilization where all races and religions co existed and thrived in harmony. Muslims, Christians, Jews and others lived under the justice of Islamic rule. If it was an occupation like you said, then the original inhabitants would've been evected, which they weren't. Instead, they were allowed to stay and practice their religions freely. I always heard the guy who had it made ordered everyone who worked on it to have their hands be cut off so that they could never create anything to rival its beauty. Always wondered about that.
Sadly that practice was quite common back then in India... Many rulers did the same to artisans...so that their monument would stand out and be unrivaled.

Fun fact: the Taj Mahal is not actually complete. Behind the mausoleum on the opposite bank is the site for another garden similar to the one surrounding the Taj. Now you will see some WhatsApp University "experts" who will say it was "Tejo Mahalya"
How the Propoganda of blatant lies about Taj Mahal, Vatican, Kaaba etc started-
Purushottam Nagesh Oak(1917-2007), who claimed Taj Mahal as a Shiva Temple a.k.a.'Tejo Mahalya'. Among his prominent claims were that Christianity and Islam are both derivatives of Hinduism; that Vatican City, Kaaba, Westminster Abbey and the Taj Mahal were once Hindu temples dedicated to Shiva; and that the Papacy (Vatican Pope) was originally a Vedic Priesthood.
In 2000 India's Supreme Court dismissed Oak's petition to declare that a Hindu king had built the Taj Mahal by saying he had a "bee in his bonnet" about the Taj. Till date, as of 2017, several court cases about Taj Mahal being a Hindu temple have been inspired by Oak's theory. In August 2017, Archaeological Survey of India stated there was no evidence to suggest the monument ever housed a temple.
There is no evidence offered by Oak to redate it to 13 centuries earlier. Technical know-how to construct structural buildings didn't exist in 4th-century India. Oak later dropped this claim and claimed it to be from the 12th century.
Similar False Historical claims are done by Oak in other structures. (If ur interested, then u can do ur own research from authentic sources for his works)
Oak is a 'mythistorian' whose work resorted to exploiting comparative philology in the generation of delusional etymologies-associating Sanskrit sound-alikes with foreign terms such as Vatican=vatika (hermitage), Christianity=Krishna-niti (the way of Krishna), Abraham as an aberration of Brahma -- to purvey an Islamophobic and anti-Christian agenda under the covers of Hindutva. Edwin Bryant in his work on Indo-Aryan theory describes Oak to be a self-styled historian whose works suffer from an ubiquitous and very poor standard of professionalism and critical methodology and who fit the definition of a crack-pot.
This is why Oak's theories have been noted to have found a popular following among right-wing Hindu factions in a bid to wage politico-religious battles.

If India is that concerned about the future of the Taj Mahal. they should offer it for sale to the same American that bought the original London Bridge which was delicately disassembled with each brick and piece getting a specific number so that reconstruction could proceed infallibly. Now it rests in the Western Desert, impervious to pollution and basking in unvarying sunshine.
The Taj, while bigger, would definitely be a project within the capabilities of the Americans. They're bloody good at a lot of things and scale certainly doesn't intimidate them. The Taj could rest for time immemorial, protected from pollution and slowly disintegrating foundations, a resplendent white again in the enduring sunshine it is used to.
