- Order ‘1977’ splatter vinyl here: ashband.lnk.to...
Ash’s debut LP ‘1977’ has been reissued for the first time on stunning black and white splatter vinyl. This spectacular debut release was a defining record for 90s guitar music, reaching No.1 in the Official UK Albums Chart, and going to achieve platinum status. It includes singles ‘Girl From Mars’, ‘Kung Fu’, ‘Goldfinger’, ‘Angel Interceptor’ and ‘Oh Yeah’ which remain staples of the Ash’s live show.
This is the first time the album has been re-issued since its 1996 release.
After leaving school in summer 1995 and embarking on a sold out riot around the UK, Ash crashed into the UK charts at number 11 with their breakthrough single ‘Girl from Mars’, establishing themselves as writers of truly great pop tunes. At home their parents watched in disbelief as their sons appeared on BBC institution, Top Of The Pops.
Inspired by Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, Pixie’s Trompe le Monde and David Bowie, ‘Girl from Mars’ was the band’s first NME single of the week and was used by NASA as hold music on their phone systems.
‘Girl from Mars’ was the second single to be produced by Owen Morris and to feature on the band’s debut number 1 album ‘1977’, released in May 1996.
Directed by Peter Christopherson, the ‘Girl from Mars’ video was filmed on a beach at Weston-super-Mare beach. Ash would later perform on the same beach for Channel 4’s programme T4’s Pop On The Beach to promote 2004 album ‘Meltdown’.
‘Girl from Mars’ featured on the soundtrack to the television program Gilmore Girls "Our Little Corner of the World".

I’m 14 and my dad’s amazing music taste has brought me here 😂
I was your age also when I first listened to this song...

90s music is the best music
Haha same
Great band. Where quite big in the 90,s. Never dated.
This song remember me The scene of Jess Mariano and Rory "Oliver Twist!"
Another great song from one of their scenes is Then She Appeared by XTC
thats how I found this song!
@@fatmabetul818 me looking up this song right now bc someone tweeted about it and i forgot what scene it was in
Exactly why I am here. 😂
That's why I'm here
i know it's cliche to say... but i sooo miss the 90s. i was 18 when this came out and was going to britpop clubs at the time. was seriously the best of times
Indie/Britpop era was ace!
The 90s was a special time.
僕にとっても本当にそうです。
青春です。最近はhiphopを聴いているが当時の音楽を聴くと本当に懐かしく14歳の気持ちを思い出す。
Popstarz the best club in London, almost every Friday in 1996
I agree. I really try not to live in past but do you know what.....fuck it! The 90's were fucking amazing
every song this band has done is incredibly catchy. Extremely underrated and Wheeler is a great songwriter.
tbf he's won an Ivor Novello award
Thanks
That's powerpop for you
イアンマクレガーの映画に使われた曲が一番好きです!
Just saw them play tonight in their hometown to 250 crowd absolutely rocking the room 30 years later .
2023...I'm 44......damn this is still as good as it was when it came out
2024 and I'm in my 50'sand you are right! Ash still a legend amongst bands.
me same old as you bro...
Very underrated band!! They deserved more!
One of the most underrated alternative rock songs of all time
It's not Alternative-Rock it's Pop-Rock but yes I agree it is criminally underrated.
@@adamknight7041
It was all alternative rock for us in the 90's.
Green Day, Oasis, Blur, Pearl Jam and so on....all alternative rock
@@adamknight7041I thought it was indie rock tbf must just be a lot of overlap in the terms
i had never heard of this band or song until it was in gilmore girls - i wish i had had a teenage summer listening to this!
I am very lucky to have had this very experience. 35 now. I haven't listened to the song in a good year or so at least - all the smells and colours and feels i was experiencing then came back as I listened. Amazing. Great to see the song is still sharing it's awesomeness!!!

It's so cool that we can experience almost any music now with just a few taps of our fingers :)
Aaaah you missed out kid. The nineties were the one.
This makes me appreciate the fact that I had several teenage summers listening to these guys when they were still a local band. Amazing bunch of lads.
@@TheFakeyCakeMaker agreed, 90's in Britain were the best years in my living memory.
I'm fifteen and discovered this song a few months ago, during quarantine... things are still weird bc of coronavirus, and listening to this song gives me sometimes hope for an interesting future, and sometimes makes me really nostalgic for memories that I don't even have. Anyway, I hope this all gets better, but rn im really glad I found this masterpiece, and some other really good alternative 90s music.
I'm 13 years old and I like some of their songs and Tim Wheeler liked my comment and then I commented back saying about myself because I was so excited and I told him that my mum thought this music video was by the wiggles and then he replied that he didn't realise that they had so many smaliaties to the wiggles 😂
FYI: This was on Instagram
Whoever you are, I hope you have an amazing life! I first listened to song in 1997 when I was 15. I’m now 38 and I hope you enjoy life as much as I have. Peace ✌️
@@grantyoung378 That's so nice, thank you so much!! Same 4 U✌️
you think tim is hot dont you.
No
In 96 I saw them in Berlin with my girl friend and after that I thought of her as my girl from Mars. She left for Mars a long time ago but when I hear this Song I am back there and I remember the time and I think: I still love you my girl from Mars.
How is your girl from Mars doing?
@@delegsgsg6353 She is married and she's got two kids.

Wish I could live the 90s again. Except for the year I did the Leaving Cert. That year can fuck off.
just finished doing my junior cert and its complete bull
Feels like yesterday I played this song with my band... apparently it was years ago, back in 1996. Now am almost 41 years old.
same goes to me, now im 42
This song came out in 1995. I looked it up.
If you want to go back but come forward try The Beths!

Beautiful days weren't they
One of the most underrated bands of all time along with James & Feeder.
Orpheus & Burn Baby Burn are also absolute bangers.
Yeah, James should be bigger than they are !
Sometimes I forget feeder are like in my top 5 most listened artists
YES. Feeder are incredible
Couldn't agree with you more, 3 criminally underrated bands right there!
ソングライターとして素晴らしいですね!
Most underrated band of all time. Extremely catchy and great song writing. Saw them in london a few weeks ago and it changed my life. Only known them for 2 years now but every time I listen they get better and better. Huge inspirations
1977 is a great album. Had it on just now and thought I'd search for what became of those lads ...
in the list of the most underrated bands ever
This song is one of those you hear for the first time and it feels like you known it your whole life. Almost Déjà vu. Feeders High and Supergrass Caught by the Fuzz also gave me the same feeling on first listen.
私はThe Bluetones - Slight Returnを13歳ごろ聴いて似たように知っていた懐かしさを感じました。
Its the summer of 1995, Chris Evans is doing the breakfast show on radio 1. I awake to this track swaggering out of my £5 tanyo clock-radio straight into my heart. Ive not heard it for many years, but i know all the words by heart, every turn of the melody, every note of the guitar break are fresh in my mind, levered from whatever little used synaptic pathway that harboured them, hidden, but never forgotten all this time. The 90s was it friends; the pinnacle of this civilization.
Probably my favourite song from the 90's. Untouchable!
incredible to think that tim wheeler wrote this when he was 16. I remember the performance on TOTPs and he still looked fresh out of high school.
Drinking snakebite + black and dancing like a mad thing at my local indie disco.. Love love the 90's but shit, how did I get so old??
Ha! Same.... 'Chaos' back in the day!
🖤🖤🖤🖤💯
1977 is a fucking brilliant debut album amazing still listen to it to this day... 😎😎😎😎😎
Blimey, the 90s were great...one long piss up from 89 right through to 2000...great music, great football...wish I could live it all over again..
I saw Ash open for Weezer on the Pinkerton tour and it was one of the best days of my teenage life.
18 years late I find out this song!! Such beautiful memories!
Can't put into words how fantastic this song is - it's one in a million
I mind seeing the band back in the 90's. They always stick out as they were one of the loudest live acts I ever heard!. Loved that 1977 album, played it to death at the time!.
35 now, Wife,3 children and my own business. Last I remember I was dancing all night to tunes like this !
Make the most of it kids your youth doesn't last long !
You're around 43 now. Everything still going good for you?

Creeps up doesn't it? One minute your 17 looking out the windscreen listening to this with life ahead and all the time in the world to do it all, chicks, travel, parties whatever, then almost overnight you're 35 and it's now in the rear view mirror and there was so much more to do, so much you were going to do. Urgggh. Lol.
We still do - just takes 2 days to get over it now!! :)
ha, ha i remember skipping school to go up to great yarmouth to watch them make this video.
I was 12 when this came out. Where has the time gone? Still gives me goosebumps.
Still loving every Ash tune. This one is one of my favorites
Fantastic stuff! It's verny rare that a band's debut album is a masterpiece. Every song timeless. Songs that kind of been there forever. Like feeder's album comfort in sound. These bands were so underrated.
Saw these guys back in the day in Brighton. They were superb. Still have the T shirt. Miss the indie 90s. Saw loads of good bands back then.
One of the best songs of the 90's
I grew up with these. I'm back in 2022 for more. Still dope
Miss the 90' s...a lot !!!
this song makes me so happy because of that one rory and jess scene that it's played in
I saw this live in Gloucestershire a few years back im only 15 i remember being on my dad's shoulders way past my bedtime screaming the lyrics
Nice.
Tim Wheeler, Mark Hamilton and RickMcMurray where a trio known as Ash, when they released this Dylan-esque pop, bubblegum favourite which reached No.11 in august 1995. K-Billy's super-sounds of the 70s just keeps on....truckin.
Await with yet, I was born, bread in northern Ireland. Your voice is our voice. Beautiful, incredibly beautiful. Thank you for the madness and everything that comes with it xxxx
90s jukebox with mates chilling with a beer, good memories. No cares, no responsibilities, great times.

32 very soon, and going through a 90s music renaissance of sorts since pandemic. Just discovered this today!! Love it. Looked up related songs to The Wannadies having just watched Romeo and Juliet (1996) for the first time, haha.
very good indie rock from the 90s
I remember that time

You don't know how I loved that.
Always just playing it loud
From the earliest hours
And I certainly don't feel no shame
I still love Ash, and girl from Mars
Remembered favorite moment of "Gilmor girls"

would be great to have been a teenager in the 90's
I forgot how much I loved Ash back in the day. ❤
a great tune from my childhood, ash was a good band, love the music video.
Northern Ireland and Rock. What a great relationship.
Ash were Northern Irish? Well I'll be fucked, I spent the 90s (And ever since) thinking they were Jocks!
No way ! I actually thought they were from the US for all these years 🤔😂😂 over 20 years later I discover the truth ! 😂 What a cool band though, takes me straight back to being care free teenager 💯
music to Love ...
A last, been looking for a 'really really 90's' music video all morning. Awesome song too ahh nostalgia.
I first heard this song playing out of my sisters bedroom - she never saw that cd again
I remember playing this banger on my Sega Saturn back in the day.. sounds just as good now than it did back then
This was playing on the tannoy (in between announcement of delayed flights) at Stansted airport yesterday morning and brought back memories of happier times back at uni! ❤
start to finish this song is sublime, and there’s not many songs I say that about
This bring me way back to when I was a promising, young man. Makes me happy and sad at the same time
The newest addition to my collection of loosely space themed songs. Great playlist for playing mass effect with.
This song kind of reminds me of that book “Feed” where the guy meets the girl on mars
Oh my... so many memories..
This song is out of this world
the most efficient nostalgia trigger for me that I know (35 y/o btw)

There's a wall mural to this song in the band's hometown of Downpatrick in Church Street.
Like the song, She Said by The Long Pigs, this song is iconic 90’s.
Love this song! It was on the first mix tape I ever got from a boyfriend

Ash was the first band I saw that were younger than me - I was like these guys where born 3 years after me and here they are on stage having the time of their lives. I’m sure that was 95 but I think this came out in 96 so must have been then I guess
