The official video for Suede's "Animal Nitrate" - Remastered for the 30th Anniversary of Suede's Debut album 'Suede', released in 1993.
Audio newly remastered by Phil Kinrade at AIR Mastering using the original ½” master tape. by James Wong (insta: @jmhwong)
Suede had received widespread media coverage in the year leading up to the release of the debut album in March 1993. "Animal Nitrate", released one month before the album was the third in a triptych of singles following on from the successful first two singles, "The Drowners" and "Metal Mickey". The title of the song is a reference to the inhalant drug amyl nitrite, although singer Brett Anderson has said it has more to do with other drugs like ecstasy and cocaine. The idea of the song came about when Anderson went through a period where, he says: "drugs were taking the place of people."
"Animal Nitrate" is the third single by Suede, released on Nude Records in 1993 and later included on the band's debut album Suede. It charted at number seven on the UK Singles Chart, making it the highest-charting single from the album.

    Lyrics:
Like his dad you know that he's had
    Animal nitrate in mind
Oh in your council home he jumped on your bones
Now you're taking it time after time
Oh, what turns you on, oh?
    Now he has gone
Oh, what turns you on, oh?
    Now your animal's gone
Well he said he'd show you his bed
And the delights of the chemical smile
So in your broken home he broke all your bones
Now you're taking it time after time
Oh, what turns you on, oh?
    Now he has gone
Oh, what turns you on, oh?
    Now your animal's gone
What does it take to turn you on, oh?
    Now he has gone
    Now you're over twenty-one, oh
    Now your animal's gone
Animal, he was animal, an animal, oh
Animal, he was animal, an animal, oh
    Animal, animal, oh
He's just an animal, an animal oh
    Animal, he was animal
He's just an animal, an animal oh
    Animal, he was animal
He's just an animal, an animal oh

The video was filmed on my estate! The shot where the camera travels along the balcony and then into a door is my friends flat who lived down the balcony! We were at school when they shot and when we got home her mum told us a band had paid her a tenner to film the entrance to her doorway. I must admit at that time we were only about 12 years old and had no idea who they were but its nice to have this reminder!

The 80's was the first time music became all about synthesizers, machines, drum machines, anything electronic and so the 90's became a fight back, an attempt to retake the mainstream from electronic shit. It was a fantastic decade, one destroyed by clowns like Simon Cowell, mainstream music is pre-decided now, they make it, market it and manipulate kids in to voting for it. You have to look for good music now, which is not so bad if you know what you like but it's a fucking shame for the artists - rock bands used to make millions, now it's the manufactured fucking pop that makes millions and brilliant rock bands can spend a decade playing 300 gigs a year just to make a hundred grand.

fractalign Yes, it's nice to see someone who appreciate all grunge, Britpop and shoegaze, they all have their most admiring features, and that's why I like all three of them, although I had to admit britpop is my least favourite genre among the three, because of, drumroll please, fookin' Oasis, but I love Suede and Pulp.

2terryh I'm not even close to that age, and I think that the best music was made way before I was born, or at least when I was little.
Though when I was 16 here was also some pretty good music being made, it wasn't as good as the older kind (except 80's music which was pretty bad for the most part).

I must admit I was more into Grunge (Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney etc..) and industrial (ministry, NIN) but loved Suede anyway as they were one of the best new UK bands back then. Where the hell did the past 20 odd years go! Enjoy your youth while you can it goes quicker than you think!

There's this Bowie documentary where a couple of people who were teens at the time Ziggy first appeared on TOTP talk about how utterly flabbergasted they were at the sight of it all. This video had a similar effect on me when I first saw it as a wee 11 year old. So different from everything else that was on MTV at the time, I just couldn't take my eyes off of this wailing, gorgeous creature. Man? Woman? Life-sized doll? Heck if I knew, but I was absolutely hypnotized by it.

      1. Before Brit Pop genre
      2. Bowie was British, born in London, therefore Bowie would be "Britpop Bowie".

    • @Dermacrosis

      *****
Bowie relesed two studio albums in 1993, one in 1995, 1997 and 1999 and therefore was active at the time. Therefore he is still the ''Britpop Bowie''
There are many examples of retconning in music. Beatles coming from Mersyside as the county didn't even exist back then, the labelling of a number of bands from Salford as comning from Manchester, etc etc.

    • @brandonherndon4394
      @brandonherndon4394 Před 8 lety +62

Bowie also released music during the 1980s when bands like Metallica and Anthrax became popular, does that make his music thrash metal? Of course not. Just because Bowie released music during the period when britpop was most popular doesn't make him a britpop musician - because he certainly wasn't.

The first time ever that I wasn't influenced by anyone or any reviews in loving a band was when I saw this video the first time and went out immediately afterwards to a CD shop to buy their first album. Love at first sight and sound. First 3 albums (Suede - Dog Man Star - Sci-Fi Lullabies) are masterpieces compared to other bands back then.

Súper contento porque seguramente hoy por la noche escucharé de nuevo esta canción en la Ciudad de México. Extraño mucho los 90's. Hay tan poca creatividad hoy en día.

oh 90's ... where art thou .... One of my favorites of the 90's ... along with Blur, Charlatans, the Stone Roses, Primal Scream, Jamiroquai, Black Crowes, Happy Mondays and Digable Planets ... and one hit wonders like Soup Dragons (Free), Stereos MCs(Conneted), Soho (Hippychick - with a great sample of Smith's - How soon is now? )and Dee Lite (Grove is on the heart) ... Although I still have love for 80's bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode, Smiths, New Order...but that is a comment for another video.

I love Suade and it just so happens that this video was not only filmed on my estate but also along my balcony! Infact the door that the camera pans into was the flat of my best mate! We were at school that day so knew nothing of it until we got home and her mum told us :-( Happy days despite living in a shithole! We're 'Trash'! ;-)

    "Animal Nitrate"
Like his dad you know that he's had
    Animal nitrate in mind
Oh in your council home he jumped on your bones
now you're taking it time after time
oh it turns you on, on, on, now he has gone
oh what turns you on, on, on, now your animal's gone?
Well he said he'd show you his bed
and the delights of his chemical smile
so in your broken home he broke all of your bones
now you're taking it time after time
oh it turns you on, on, on, now he has gone
oh what turns you on, on, on, now yor animal's gone?
what does it take to turn you on, on
    now he has gone?
    now you're over 21?
    now your animal's gone?
animal, he was animal, an animal
