Ash’s debut LP ‘1977’ has been reissued for the first time on stunning black and white splatter vinyl. This spectacular debut release was a defining record for 90s guitar music, reaching No.1 in the Official UK Albums Chart, and going to achieve platinum status. It includes singles ‘Girl From Mars’, ‘Kung Fu’, ‘Goldfinger’, ‘Angel Interceptor’ and ‘Oh Yeah’ which remain staples of the Ash’s live show.
This is the first time the album has been re-issued since its 1996 release.
After 3 months in Rockfield Studios with maverick Oasis producer Owen Morris Ash emerged with their debut album ‘1977’. Released ahead of the chart topping ‘1977’, ‘Goldfinger’ was the band’s first single to enter the UK Top 5 in April 1996.
Influenced by the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson’s nutso chord changes, and John Barry’s James Bond themes, ‘Goldfinger’ was written across three continents; Tim’s childhood bedroom in Downpatrick, through jetleg induced insomnia in a Japanese hotel room, and on the road in North America.
The video was directed by Mike Brady and filmed in London.

This song is what falling in love in the 90s felt like (at least how I remember it).
Oh yes
@@annettepugh5060 SHE WAS TAKING ME OVER
Same here.
Yes!
Oh my god, it literally is!
Ash are such an underrated band. Huge in the 90s but (wrongly) not remembered in the same way as Oasis and so on. This and "Girl From Mars" are absolute chooooooooons
Yeah they are, I agree. Ash should have gotten more credit than they actually did. They weren't pure indie, they had some punky/grungy tracks too so they were a crossover band basically. First gig I ever went to way back in 1998! Amazing fun show. I never listen to them much these days because I'm into metal now but they will always have a special place in my heart.
As to why they were underrated; 2 reasons:-
There were loads of other indie/britrock bands at the time that got the all the media attention instead, so they went under the radar (basically their breakthrough into the market was bad timing).
Also they lacked image. Look at Oasis back then; the Gallagher brothers antics help mould their marketing image, consequently enhancing record sales. Ash were just as talented but didn't get the same adulation. That's kinda unfair but it's just how the music industry operates sadly.
90's Oasis vs Blur Vs Pulp. But Ash were bloody brilliant. So many good bands in the 90s it's insane.
There needs to be an Indie Tour put together with all of them! It'd be absolute stellar!!
Don't forget Oscean Colour Scene
Not wrong..
one of the most underrated songs ever written, incredible production and harmony, lyrics. always resonates with me and is such a massive pop production. should be vastly more respected by the music community.

@@andrewmay1299God forbid someone be enthusiastic about their interests...
It's a really stunning song tbh, a masterpiece
its just one of my favorites and i just think it really captures a few different things in pop music. i can see how some would not agree. i think it's basically a form of perfection for this era of "brit-pop" music@@andrewmay1299
When I close my eyes and listen to this song, I am 16 again. :)
I heard this song when I was 5 years old 😭😭😭
#Nostalgic
Me too.
I was 15 time flys
Iam 86 again just like in 1996.
Born 1979, I had the cassette of this and almost wore it out on my personal Aiwa. Happy days.
People often say 'I'm most happy at the age I am now'. I say bollocks. Life will never get better than drinking late at summer's night as a 17 year old listening to Ash.
Fucking sublime. It's all donwhill from there!
It is twelve years now. How do you look back at your statement, if I may ask?
Bleak, hope you found something to give you purpose
I agree it's all downhill from 17, peaked at that age
That mid verse key change still makes me happy!
I always wait for that part!
That key change is life!
One of the best songs of mid 90’s. no hold on, one of the best songs ever! Period. Happy days, when British/Irish music was in a place of it’s own. Hope those days return……….
I've only just gotten into Ash. I don't know how I missed it for so long, I've just been listening to the strokes for the last 10 years because nothing was grabbing my attention
Tim Wheeler's shirt is fantastic, even by 1996's standards. This album was a 90s Brit rock masterpiece, a truly excellent band. Ash, I salute you.
I bought it blindly because of the title and was pleasantly surprised. 1977 was a good year for me. It even had a song referencing Star Wars, Darkside Lightside. (in 1996 Star Wars fandom was dead). czcams.com/video/XAXa1_Az2bg/video.html

this song reminds me one of the most thoughtless and happy times of my life...
teenhood, so sweet and so cruel...
Encapsulates those feeling of falling in love at college back in 1996 so distinctly.
If you dont love Ash then you dont rate great songs
Up the 90's!
The Vocalist was 20 years old when He sang this Nostalgic Song
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I loved the key changes in this song. Loved the mid-90s in general too, when the charts were mostly just indie vs dance. The charts died in 2001 with Popstars / Hear'Say, and other reality TV sheep that followed thereafter.
yes, and once was better than today, they will repeat this speech about 2016 in ten years
+Samuel Saia How bad will the music have to be in a decade that this decade will seem good?
@@ngkktht774 You speak the truth friend. That is exactly what I think too.
Agreed. The chords are so strangely arranged. This isn't just a banger (which it is), it's kind of a strange number for a leadoff single. A top 5 hit in the UK no less. Loved 1977. Such a great great album.
@@NiGhTeMpEsT no they won't. Nobody is repeating it about 2010, or 2005. Music has mostly sucked since the turn of the century.
ash are the ultimate summer band, and make you feel happy even when its pissing down...i love them for that alone..and many other reasons!!
Aahhh 90's... .broke but im happy, smokin low quality weed and cheap beer..now im drinkin fancy wine but cant compares that good old day..
One of the greatest songs that pretty much no one's heard.
2020 and I still love this!!!
Can't beat Tim Wheeler and the boys. Cj
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
2022 and still loving it 💖💖
Still holds up - a classic, timeless song from a band which is sadly underrated. Saw them play in Portland, Oregon yesterday in front of 30 people but 25 of us sang to every song and Tim, Mark and Rick were still loving playing the music they wrote as teenagers.
Am I 90's generation too when i was born in 1998? I'd love to.. I love this music!
SO ROMANTIC AND EUPHORIC YET WISTFUL.
One of the best songs of the 90’s. How do these lyrics seem to nail everything about being young and in love?
Brings back all my good old days & memories in the 90's. I was a teenager, I miss it so much...
Same
Beautiful song, I was always disappointed Ash never broke here in the US.
Killer drum fills.
This song is how the 90s tasted.
so much great music in the 90's that this wasn't very popular, yet if it came out today it'd be the best rock song in years
This is the best comment on CZcams... I've never thought of it like that before !! Very very true !
I'm surprised it has so few views.
What a tuuuune! One of the best from the 90s. Ash were very underrated.
Such a handsome lad, so young & puppy like. Growing old sux, & pretty ppl seem 2 wear it the hardest. Still, in their day, Ash had it going on. Saw them live at the 1996 Livid Festival in Brisbane, Australia & they totally kicked ass. He was the best looking boy I'd seen in a mighty long time, which made up for his frail voice...
...& I just realized how LONG AGO that was...............
....OMG!!!... where did the years go?
a masterpiece a masterpiece
One of the very first albums that I got on CD. Still love it today.
This has to be one of the greatest Britpop songs ever, love the dramatic chord changes. So sad how music has deteriorated since 2000…
Just need to search for it
100% agree. Sure, maybe they were a one-hit wonder, but that one hit was better than every other British song that decade (MAYBE - I have a thing for trip hop so I can't say absolutely), so fuck it.
@@shitsumeilegumovitchAsh were definitely not a one hit wonder😅
First time i watched Goldfinger on MTV it blows my mind. Saw ash live at Batchkapp in Frankfurt. After playing this song i have to go to the hospital cause i jumped with the music up and down and i twist my ankle. After years still got a small scar. Hope it will never disapear.
I have not heard this in so long, I was 14 in 96 and this song has always made me feel good.
I was 14 in ‘96 too man!!!’ Rock on ‘82 gang 🤘🏻
They guys deserved the same popularity as Blur IMO. I met Tim at a coffee spot in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Great guy. 👍🏼
"Her brother started school again today..." One of those lyrics that manages to mean nothing and everything at the same time.
Ahahah so true
Do you think this is her excuse? She's lying and she never turns up. She's used this excuse before..?
@@tyrionlannister6955 Hmm, possibly. Although the next line - "a thought to pass the time, to occupy my mind while I waited for her" works in context with her - she's got under his skin so much, he can't stop thinking about the smallest details of her life
Thank you 💕
It's just a thought to pass the time. No iPhones back then. Beautiful.
The quality of songs on this album was insane for people who were only just 18/19.
Ash were special
This is such an underated tune
Bring back the 90's!
Brillant tune
Brillant album

Ahh great memories of my teenhood...loved this band. 1977 is still one of the great britpop albums
Oh the memories...reminds me of college and revising for my A Levels.
The backing vocals/harmonies on the last few choruses just make it.
Awwww man, I love 90's music videos. The flashes, the skewed camera pans. Classic. Oh and lets not forget the classic woman-looking-lonely-in-black-and-white scenario.
This song is emotionally haunting 4 me...
Very spexial one
It's good for the soul to come back to this every so often. Thank you Ash
It's one of those songs that will live with you forever, I remember when I first heard it on the radio on radio 1, and it hasn't left me since..total genius.
This song brings back memories id forgotten that I had...
I was on Portabello Rd and it came in my head. I ran in a shop..described it as "that tune that undulates with those rising chord changes? ??" ...assistant said "oh Goldfinger Ash" ..I ran n gottit lol
90's music.. will miss it forever..
Great times = 90's
[Verse 1]
Move closer
Set my mind on fire
Taking over
The world seems so alive, oh ah ooh
The world seems so alive
[Chorus]
She slips into the night and she is gone
Gone to set the score, gone into the town
Rain shining in her eyes
Her brother started school again today
A thought to pass the time, to occupy my mind
While I'm waiting for her
[Verse 2]
Down in the basement
Listening to the rain
Thinking things over
I think it over again, oh ah ooh
I think it over again
[Chorus]
She slipped into the night and she was gone
Gone to set the score, gone into the town
Rain shining in her eyes
Her brother started school again today
A thought to pass the time, to occupy my mind
While I'm waiting for her
[Instrumental]
[Verse 3]
I'm riding it down
Listen to the rain
She'll be here soon
I lie back and drift away, oh ah ooh
I lie back and drift away
[Chorus]
She slipped into the night and she was gone
Gone to set the score, gone into the town
Rain shining in her eyes
Her brother started school again today
A thought to pass the time, to occupy my mind
While I'm waiting for her
[Outro]
I'm feeling so alive, feeling so real
On a stormy night, the rain is coming down
Rain like never before
I've got some records on and some bottles of wine
On a stormy night, the rain is lashing down
And I'm waiting for her
2021 and still sounding as fresh as the day it was released!
If I could hear this in 4K my head would explode 🇺🇸👍🇨🇮
When I listen to this again it’s almost like time has stood still.
"on the stormy night - the rain came crashing down" - a perfect song that i will never time tire of - Bless
90's Music ❤
25 years since I heard this on Shine 4 on a family holiday. A quarter of a century!
Great song. So under rated as a band. Saw them last year and they were amazing.
True
Ikr
Music like this really goes to show the '90s were truly epic.
I was 14 in 1996, just getting into music, finding my sound. As such I feel blessed that '96 was such a fantastic year for music. Weird to think that in years to come, people will be saying the same about this decade, getting all nostalgic and misty eyed, even though 90% of todays output is naff...
and now I sound like my dad. I give up!
Agreed that it was an amazing time, This,Failure,Hum ,Type O Negative..Music never really came back that strong.
As the saying goes, "90% of X is rubbish because 90% of everything is rubbish". Over time people forget the 90% that was rubbish. Then again I remember there *was* a lot of good stuff, at least in the UK it stood out because Radio One suddenly started playing this sort of stuff.
Great 🎵 👍 I miss the 90s the music was great.
Tim Wheeler was just a kid here and had so much talent! I remember I was just a few years younger than these guys when I heard them and being in awe. Here, I am approaching middle-age, still playing guitar, still don´t have that much talent.
As an old guy (now) in love with the song, it's so weird to see how young he was. How young we all were. What a time to be alive. If only we'd realised then (okay, not we, me).
Still so epic
Tune! Brings back great memories from a great era of indie!
Very under-rated band, like Shed Seven and Teenage Fanclub.
Wow, this was my favourite song ever in 1996. I had good taste back then. This brought back memories.
You did. I only discovered this song years later, but it's one of the best
An all time favourite. It reminds me of various times in my life.
One of the top three greatest guitar solos of all time.
2022 and I still love this!!!
If you’re a certain age, this is upsettingly good.
Oh yeah
Loved this band. In mid -late 90's ,- early 2000's Tim's underrated as a songwriter for such a young guy. Great album also.
i was 4 when this came out and it was on a cd for Q magazine. we played it in the car on holiday in switzerland, don't know how i remember that far back lol. but it's a sentimental song..
Gives me chills....still been late teens🖤🖤🖤🖤very cool tune still......sooo underated asf
tim is timeless!
awesome rock song. my favouirite ash song, this song is so damm underrated, one of the all time underrated rock bands ash is. i was 10 years old when this track first came out loved it then still do now, there is not too many rock songs like this one too underrated.
We think the same😀😀😀😀
2020 I still love this since 1996!@! from south korea .. goldfinger is my inspiration song though i drank soju toomuch
This album is certainly one of the best debuts in the last 20 years or so, and considering the age of the boys all the more reason to admire it.
What a song sound track to my teens
What a song.! Loved it in the 90s and love it now. I could listen to this and Blinded by the Sun-Seahorses all day.

This tune has earwormed me the past few days since I caught it on the TOTP repeats on BBC 4!. One of the best from 96. I played the first album tons when it came out...one of the loudest bands I ever heard live!.
The best ever Ash tune
take me back to the time when i was young and innocent :)
GREAT TUNE, GREAT BAND.
1997 is one the best brit album ever. Plus, it's the soundtrack of my thoughtless, easy and passionate 14 year-old...when all you need for being happy was a bunch of friends, a walkman and a whole day to spend hanging around pretending to be the coolest guys in the neighborhood.
Man this is long ago, I miss the 90's. It was the time I started to play guitar in bands and went to high-school. Nice memories and good music !

Does anyone remember listening to these guys on BBC Radio 1?
I have spent a week at least with this tune in my head thinking who in earth it is, at 19.08 hours 1st August 2021 I finally divinely found the answer, thank you, what a jolly relief. Good tune as well.
