#thedarkness #slash #review - Hudba
It’s amazing how Justin can hear the tune and play it, he is not only a very talented artist but also so articulate, beautifully spoken, witty, smart and always entertaining and humble. Such a comedian
Came hear to say exactly the same thing! Plus also his ability to associate melodies with past tunes 😃 Your message was first up on my feed!
but being a rockstar got to his head a wee bit.
Thanks for showing some love to the Dandys. Been a fan since 1994, and they've never disappointed.
The Dandy Warhols have been kicking ass for over 30 years
Seeing Slash & Myles tonight in Sydney at the Hordern
Damn you mate! It was my girlfriend’s best friend’s birthday…. So was on duty. How was it?
@@KevinMcLaren71 It was a great show. Slash & the band were awesome. I personally preferred Rose Tattoo over The Struts as far as the support bands were concerned. Slash & the guys played Bad Apple & Always on the run.
Seeing them in the UK at the end of March 🍻
@@Bradford659 bad apples is such an underrated gunners song. Glad it was good mate. They’ll tour again … sigh haha
One time Courtney came over cause I lived with girlfriend and I had a charvel metal guitar in 95’ and he played it for a minute and then said, oh what if someone sees me? Cause it wouldn’t be cool to be seen in 95’ with a metal guitar with a pointy headstock. I thought that was funny. Making fun of himself if seen as not cool. 😅
Hail Mary is a reference to a Hail Mary Pass in American Football, where the team thats down by one point up against the timer, throws the ball far down the field with a hope and a prayer that the guy catches it and makes it to the touchdown or at least a first down. It’s a hope and a prayer in the face of adversity. Completed hail mary passes that have won the game in the last second of a timer are incredibly exciting.
I don't believe you..... (only kidding - never heard it explained properly like that before.. cool).
@@tankthelord1178 😂 and I am zero when it comes to American Football. Thats probably all I know. Hah
@@billybobtexas lol - Good Luck.
Yup.
So, like a prayer?
The Dandy Warhols are my favorite band. So awesome to see you do a video on one of their songs
I'm a Dandy too❤
You, Justin Hawkins, MUST watch “Dig!” - wonderful documentary about the dandies’ and Brian Jonestown massacre’s complicated relationship
Ehhhh...."documentary"?
No.
Slash is the reason i play a Les Paul, hes got a sound all of his own, hes a beast.
The Dandy’s are brilliant- always have been
So glad to hear Slash on another artist’s recording. It’s been a while. The world needs to know.
between this and their song with frank black i'm pretty pumped for whatever album the dandies are dropping next
Yes ..... I recognised that pentatonic harmonic suspended 4th major on the E chord right away as well 😆😆
Beato’d!
@@Wileylikethehawkdamn you beat me to it!
I am glad it was recognised as a joke ....
You should've said they beato'd you to it 😆
Love the analysis on how Slash gets his tone.
I wish there were more collaborations like this. They introduce fans of one to fans of another. The outcome is a piece of work you’d never expect as the artists bounce their creative juices off one another.
Used to see the Dandys back when they first started out in Portland OR at a club I worked at (Berbati's Pan) and up Burnside at The X-Ray Cafe in the mid nineties if anyone here remembers them. Sadly, both clubs are long gone but glad to see The Dandy Warhols are still making great music!
Miss those places
Slash ALWAYS flies that rock n roll flag high and proud! One of the few REAL men left in rock….music in general
Justin, you awesome, wonderful person.........
As someone who is a good listener and not a musician, I always enjoy the hand holding approach to guitar terms ❤
Into the Dandy's from Day 1. This new song is atypical of their genre but I love it.
The Dandy’s are my all time favourite band ever, even more than Bauhaus, Curve and the Sisters of Mercy. Ok, they’ve been off the boil for years, but when they’re great they’re still great.
Also Courtney’s actual name is Courtney Taylor. The Taylor-Taylor thing is an in joke after a music journalist got his name wrong.
Amazing and hugely underrated band. Dandy’s Rule! 👌🏼
Great analysis in this video Justin, Slash is a legend....
My old roommate tattooed Courtney and Zia and knew the Dandy’s well. One night I came home from work their van was outside my house and the Dandy’s were in my back yard while my roommate was playing Boys Better on his bass while singing his guts out. lol Super cringey and amazing night. Lol
I like it ..... mostly for the drums and Slash 🎩
😎
I love the Turkish Delight sound too
For any nubes to The Dandy's go and listen to the album "Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia", one of those classics you can always enjoy from start to finish
Best new music I’ve heard in a while: Not a collaboration I’d have expected but that makes it all the more amazing!
I actually met the Dandy Warhol's on bonfire night in 2000, I think. They'd just got off a plane, did TOTP and then ended up suffering my company at a firework show. Probably a day they'd want to forget.
I was just listening to their TV Theme Song at lunch!
Is it Status Quo's Sweet Caroline? I love them, but it is easy to mix their songs up sometimes 😅
Dandys are my favourite band.
I really enjoy Justin's combination of entertaining analysis and musical education. Through this channel, I feel like I've learned to hear things in songs that I never really noticed before - and even learned WHY those sounds might be there. As a lifelong music lover who is not at all musically inclined, I appreciate the insights!
Justin, it's Sweet Caroline by the Quo ❤ just found this channel, utterly spiffing and you are a shining light ✨️
I thank you, Sir Hawkins
Had a quick look through the other comments, really surprised nobody has noticed it sound a lot like BRMC, which is awesome, love it
Best of luck on the podcast tour. I hope that tour makes it to America one day!
Yeah, this was pretty good, actually 🙂 Good music + you in a delightful mood = successfully cheered up
It’s not bad, especially compared with “We Used to Be Friends”.
Oh WOW, thanks for bringing in the Dandys. Im seeing them in a couple of weeks in Toronto. This song it great, and yes still around. Coolest band on the planet ❤
We love you!!! Thank you for doing what you do. ♥♥♥
Looking great Justin! All the best to you mate and all the rest of the gang as well 🌹🎸🤓👍🌻🥇
Flashback to seeing the Dandy Warhols at the Richo in Melbourne in 2000 maybe? Glad they're still around! All I can remember is a cowboy hat...
Any time I hear Slash mentioned anywhere from now on, I’m going to think “not a dolphin” 🐬
You say you can't go wrong with a Les Paul.. you haven't heard me play Mr Hawkins. I can prove that statement wrong 😂
Some interesting stuff about this band and video. I was in a band in Portland Oregon in the late 80's and through the 90's. Dandy's opened up for a band I was in when they started out at some rock clubs in Portland area.
The other interesting thing is the ship in the video. The New Carrissa ran aground during a storm and broke apart in Coos Bay and sat on the beach for years and was eventually salvaged but large sections were there for a long time. Not many outside of Oregon would remember or know about that ship. Glad these guys are still at it!!!!!
This IS a very good song! Already on my list. Thanks! 💙💙💙💙💙🦩✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
I love how you reference Led Zep. Four musicians that just kicked ass together. RIP Bonzo….💔🕊️
Was just thinking about Kashmir when he mentioned LZ. Well played Splash…😂 might go and watch the actual video now
That stole ALL their hits
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 - Robert mentioned all of them while listening to bootlegs. So, guess they should be glad Zep covered them- put them in the spotlight. lol!!
Kind of a When the Levee Breaks rhythm. Either that or Fever Dog by Stillwater😂
My favourite collaboration from Slash will forever be the song "Kick it up a Notch", from the FABULOUS hit television series PHINEAS AND FERB BABY!! Blew my mind seeing it when i was younger, one of my favourite guitarists working withh one of my favorite shows!
Thank you for reminding me about a band I love. I have seen them live here in Santa Cruz CA. They are awesome!
Well done on the new gibson garage visit promo mate.
Some nice sarcasm.
Love the 335 playing position.
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Againnnnnnnnnnnnnn….🎸🎸🎸
Brilliant already - WOW!
That ship wreck is new carissa. Ran aground on shore of their home state. Was huge deal here.
I don't play guitar but love the fact you break this down in a way that makes so much sense. Thanks Mr Hawkins
That bit of the guitar where the switch lives on a Les Paul is called a bout. The upper bout in this case.
You sound like know what you're talking about
Todd Kerns from Slash's band came on our podcast Rock, Paper, Swords, what a cool guy. Ian Anderson came on too! You should come on Justin, chat some history and guitars and stuff!
iT IS A GREAT TUNE, REALLY COOL RIFF
I discovered this a few days ago. I'd never heard this band before, but I f***ing LOVE it! 🤘🤘
Oh you have so much more to discover, and their music is very varied.
Courtney Taylor-Taylor's surname is likely a stage name, real name is (or was) Courtney Taylor. JHRA is misinterpreting the term "hail mary" because in American Football it means a long, risky forward pass thrown in desperation. Getting to The Beck Theatre by public transport is a rather tricky affair, because it is not near a tube station. Too hellish a trip for me to contemplate, and unfortunately I had to pass on the other London date because I am seeing DragonForce & Amaranthe that night. Slash is performing his "cry of the wah" technique on "I'd Like To Help You With Your Problem", I don't think any of the significant Whitesnake guitarists ever specialised in that approach.
I'm not sure but I think he changed his surname to Taylor-Taylor to take the piss out of someone who got his name confused or something like that
REALLY nice 👍🏻 I’ve just added to my playlist, which you’re mostly responsible for curating through these review videos. cheers.
The Dandys never went away and every album is different. They are all recognizable as the Dandys but each one has a different style. I suspect you would like Earth to the Dandy Warhols.
Who wouldn't?
The Status Quo track you are thinking of is 'Caroline'
Seeing slash and myles kennedy in manchester in april with my sister cant wait.
Glad you mentioned the Hayes show. Ticket purchased ✅
My mind will be truly blown if Slash ever collaborates with Quo! The song is ‘Caroline’. Have a great tour.
10:35 Fool For Your Loving
😂 Never mind; you already got it.
One of the best tunes of the year so far
So much sweet guitar, wah-wah, slash talk. Sweeet!
Another brilliant analysis of true music Justin, keep em’ coming
Just watched your video with Gibson, fucking hilarious.
I assumed you meant an older vid as I didn’t know about this new one:

533,000🎉🎉🎉…….Slash!!!🎸👍
Just plugged your gig at Hayes to my mates in and around the area. 👍
I saw them some years ago. They could generate that hypnotic thing on stage. Unique band.
First time you came to Australia, you played the Gaelic Club in Sydney, courtesy of the MMM radio station. I was there & it confirmed what Guitar magazine wrote about the Darkness ie you fcuking rock 🤘
Saw them at the Paradise rock club in Boston, awesome show.
The Hail Mary is an American Football reference where you make some ridiculous move, like a an absurdly long pass in order to score the final winning points at the final whistle when you are behind,
So, kinda like praying for a miracle or Devine intervention?
Great to see you giving the Dandy's some love Jhawk!
Sounds pretty cool. I'm a big fan of the Eastern sounding runs. Neck pickup sounds great for anything above the twelfth fret. See YOU on the ice... well at the Bloomsbury Theatre!! 😉
I am going to have to change my alert tones for text messages as I pause and look to see if I received a message on every bong.
Decent tune and great review, slash can do no wrong. Best of luck on the live tour
Amazing collaboration in my ears, and still waiting for this catchy melody to come around again.
Ah no, it's probably a riff. A catchy, melodic riff.
Hi, this reminded me Gary Clark JR, he has a similar style in some songs, todo much space to play over the track.
Nothing to dislike here, it's brilliant
Cool song, I must check them out further. Love the channel Justin, I learn quite a bit from it, Thank you very much. Are there any plans for The Darkness to do some shows in the States? I can only hope.
They toured the US last fall
"Arses on seats" was very very Super Hans. Love it!
Cant believe i haven’t heard people talking about the obvious Helmet-Unsung vibe in the verses. I love it!
You've been teasing this book for aaaages, when it finally lands it better have a lot of words in it, or at least a small number of very long words. 😆
If he writes it like he writes his missives, or like he tells anecdotes I suspect it will be sufficiently entertaining 🙂
I’m happy to hear it’s still happening. He’s got a lot going on and I thought this was getting shelved. And I really hope that he’s writing it himself. The music bios written “with” someone tend to come off as nothing more than an interview.
@n Yeah, ghostwriting is very, very common (I've done a bit of that myself through the years) and I could understand such a choice in this case because of lacking time... However, Justin obviously doesn't lack in writing skill, so from that perspective it would be sad, because... yeah, he obviously have writing skills.
@@MariaFrancesca I'm sure it will be, I usually only ever buy second hand books, but I will actually buy Justin's book new. 😂
@@MariaFrancescaThat’s exactly what I was thinking. The man can clearly write so I’d be a little disappointed if it’s not written by him.
Super fucking cool synopsis, main man. Wicked!
Pete 🏴 😊
Brilliant video! I love all the explanations. You make music theory and technical thingumy-bobs simple and entertaining for musician-wannabe’s like me! 😊 Thank you! 🙏🏻
Love the track too. I expected the Dandy Warhols to be more bohemian somehow… but then again I haven’t thought about them since they released Bohemian Like You, so maybe it was a subconscious preconception? 😅
Dandy Warhols are fucking brilliant.
I need a sugar daddy to see you in London… help
Criminally underrated
Seeing them in 2 weeks, can't wait
the mad max drum kit is killer!
My preferred double-barrel rock name: Garry Gary Beers
I had no idea that them in the Bryan jonestown massacre were rivals. I love both of these bands. I've seen guns n' roses, and slashes snake pit back in the day. What a great collaboration!
You should watch "Dig!" It is the Dandy's and Jonestown's co-rockumentary.
They’re not really rivals like the movie makes them out to be but there was definitely some tension between the 2 bands at one point.
I thought of you watching this Justin, I'm glad you like it!
I'm surprise by the collab, that must be a whole story on its own.
Loved the wah pedal segment 😅
as soon as you started saying the main riff sounded like another song i knew you were gonna say quo!! and its Caroline off of the Hello album ;)
The guitar riff initially reminded me a bit of Cherub Rock by Smashing Pumpkins. I have 2 Morleys…a volume pedal and a wah.
This song is so great, the first single featuring Frank Black was excellent too. I love them and this was very good to hear, as their last proper album "Why You So Crazy" was absolutely abysmal.
Awesome groove in this song.
I think you're thinking of Caroline or maybe Down, Down by the Quo. I could be wrong. Bloody love the Quo tho, first proper rock concert I went to as a wee lad at the NEC in Brum....in 198??....err...in the past.
Wonderful song and cogent analysis
Man… You are funny guy..😁👏🙌
You are one of the special inspirational person I wanna meet up & talk if I had a chance..😇🤝
Slash is just Amazing.. He’s the Reason I play guitar & love R n B (Rock n Blues) 😜🎩😎
Seen this vid of theirs a few times now and the vid gets better each time when you suss out what's going on.
