Hi Josh I've been a professional painter for over 50 years in California. You did a beautiful job on those windows. If you don't mind may I make a suggestion? Please wear gloves when you're spraying your paint. I use the blue rubber gloves you see in Doctors offices. They are inexpensive. Paint and even paint thinners will eventually dry out your skin and more importantly the chemicals in enamel paint ( or really any paint) is atomized to a very small size that can actually enter you body through the pores of you skin. This is true weather you're using a spray can of paint or using an airless sprayer which incidentally is even more dangerous because airless spray goes directly into your blood stream if you accidentally spray any exposed part of your body at close range. Just a well meaning tip Josh and please keep up the great videos. Garry
Cheers legend i will definitely take your advice. RESPECT
I did it! I painted one window 😂 but I followed your instructions, took a lot of care in prepping and it looks awesome. From 80s faded mission brown to bright white. You've saved us buying whole new frames. Thank you!
Hi Mira, super happy you followed my video and got rid of one mission brown window, only ten to go😂
I’m literally about to paint my mission brown white helpfull video man cheers
Love this, just what I need. I had a look but cant see any comments about the black rubber seals. Do you spray paint over them? Especially as I will be painting from mission brown to white. The black seals would stand out but I dont want to destroy them!
In the US- mind BLOWN at the ability to change the tip of the sprayer to control the spray fan size!
Hi Noreen, haha most hardware or home depo should sell replacement caps for different size fan if not ebay definitely sells then. Hope this help! Thanks for watching
Great demo! The white really makes the frames pop. I'm planning to do that to my 50 year-old bare aluminum window frames. Then install muntin kits for an upgraded look.
I am so glad I lucked onto your site. I’m about to paint my aluminium windows in black. Now I know what to do thank you.
when you scraped the corroded aluminium window frame shivers went down my spine, reminds me of blackboards at school, i need ear plugs LOL.
Stoked to find this video and bonus that he was an Aussie bloke so that I could find the right tools and paints needed!
Thank you so much for watching Jade 🙏
Perfect tutorial Josh. Exactly what I needed. Followed your step by step guide and literally turned the front of my house into the talking point of the street. Nice work mate. Much Love and Respect.
Thank you legend appreciate you watching on & the kind words. Nothing better than hearing you turned your house into something special with a little bit of my help🙏 Respect 👊
Awesome!!! I’m been looking for a video like this everywhere
Appreciate you work and the pointers you share Josh. Coming fellow painter new to the business.
Love you work Josh! Followed your tips and windows came up great.
Legend 👍🏼
Awesome to hear mate. Appreciate the message. Thank you 🙏
Followed your instructions to the letter and now my dated 80’s metallic brown frames are refinished in ‘Grey Friars’ to match the new house colour. I reckon you’ve saved me thousands! Cheers mate, good job
This is so awesome Lain! I never get tired of hearing about the transformations. So happy I could help. Thanks for sharing 🙏
I did my windows from mission brown to primrose some 20 years ago. Nothing I could find back then in a pressure can, so I used an airless paint gun and exterior paint.
Wandering the isles of Bunnings the other week, I seen it in a can!
Thought, I need to do these again.
Then I stumbled on your video.
More interested in your prep than the painting.
Great job! Glad I watched.🤘
going to attempt this on the weekend - thanks for a great detailed video
Let me know how you go. 🙏 appreciate it.
Thanks Josh, doing a home reno myself and wanted to save some bucks on a sliding door but couldn't find the right colour even though there was plenty to buy as I didn't think you could paint them to a quality finish. Now I'm confident I can paint them now 👍🇦🇺
Hi Russe, yes most definitely you can achieve a factory finish just by painting them correctly with the right products & save some money also. Good luck with the Reno's 👍
Watched your video and it was a lifesaver! Worked like a charm and the window looks amazing 👍👍👍👍👍 Thanks!!
so glad to hear this, thank you so much
I love using the dulux duramax. Ive had great success doing windows and wire screens.
Such a good product! Easy to use and great perfect finish. Glad to hear you got the same result.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I’ve been lost on what to do with our dates aluminium windows and this is exactly what I want them to look like!
Awesome to hear Katie & thank you for watching 🙌 sharing is success! Would love to know how they turn out.
Well done Josh, your windows do look great, Thanks for all the tips to do the job 👍
Appreciate the message and watching on Rob. Respect 🙌
Josh you inspire me so much. I sit and watch your videos all day. I should be painting lol but if I watch you a few times it gives me the confidence to repaint all my cream windows to white . Not looking forward to sanding and painting old honey comb security screens though lol. Oh well that’s my challenge
So looking forward to following you with more videos.
You should be so proud of yourself
Thanks so much for the vid , will be getting rid of my dated red window frames for sure now.
glad it could help
Thnx a-lot you did amaaaaazing job 👏🏼👏🏼
Much love and appreciation from Saudi Arabia
Awesome glad it all worked out🙏 thank you
Great vid man. Easy to follow. 🤙
Definitely going to give this a go on my old mission brown frames
Thanks Josh! This video inspired me to paint my windows.
Awesome to hear mate I love to inspire peeps to paint 💯🙌
Nice one brother! Yiew! That was clean af mate, love ya work! Going to give it a shot myself 🤙🇦🇺
Thanks ❤️ I’m renovating my home. And this will help ❤️
Thank you for the message & watching
Good luck with the Reno 🙏❤
Excellent instructional video Josh. Thanks
Thank you bobby. Much appreciated 🙏
Thank you! This will be my lockdown project
Thanks tones! definitely keep you busy over lockdown. Let me know how you go🙏 good luck
Thank you for adding comment about the bare aluminium. Its what I've been looking for. Painting the interior of the windows as the exterior belongs to strat compliance and they are 50 year old ugly windows. trusting black will be just the ticket. Geat Job
Your video gave me the confidence to give this a shot on some old brown aluminium windows which are now satin white both inside and out. Followed your directions and they came out fantastic. Thanks heaps for showing what to do here. Note to anyone else wanting to give it a shot: Prep is everything - take your time removing latches and masking up. For me (first time spray painting) the Etch primer ran a bit until I worked out what I was doing - When it’s dry sand the runs lightly back until smooth, wipe the dust, and carry on where you left off. The top coat goes on really easy. Just like a bought one :D
That makes us super happy story's like this is why we do them. so thank you emma🙏
Thank you Josh for for a great video. Emma I am thinking of painting our brown windows white also, I was worried they nieghbour peal on the bottom as they are sliding windows. Did that happen with you.
Thanks for the tips. My frames are also brown anodized aluminum and look like crap.
Piece and Love! Thank you!
Respect 💯🙏🤙❤
This video saved the day ✨🤩 Thank you!
Glad to hear 🙌 thank you
Fine masking job. Very thorough prep. I have similar scenery in gulf shores Alabama 👊🏼 Good on ya 🤘🏻
Cheers Homie! All about the prep💯 respect all the way to BAMA
Awesome stuff mate love your work
Appreciate you watching on and the kind word's 🙏
Excellent josh exactly what i was looking for. Bunnings crew told me nothing.
Thanks mate,They usually do mate. Even if they did give advice I really wouldn't take it💯
Inspired!!! THANK YOU!
Thank you 🙏
Bloody brilliant matey. Great tutorial ❤
Appreciate brother 🙌❤️
Awesome video and explanation. What a view. Not in aus anymore so going to find the American counterparts and get stuck into the 1980s brown trim yiewwww.
Nice. Thanks, brother.
Great video mate. Thanks for posting. Very helpful. Peace
Thanks Adam. Much appreciated 🙏
Awesome work Josh. In the process of changing our windows from cream to black. My first window was a bit of a mission to prep but hope that I get better and faster with the next 9 🥴😂 thanx for sharing
Hi Lisa, thank you for sharing & watching. love hearing about the transformations! The first one is always the hardest the next nine will be a breeze. You got this 💯🙏
Excellent. Thanks.
Good on ya Josh, enjoyed that.
Appreciate it mate💯 legend
Just a thank you for the great info!
Thank you Natalie means the 🌏🙏
Love your videos josh, would u also try seal n peel on the glass or is it just so much faster taping and masking paper?
Great Video, would love to see your tips for painting the bottom track for sliding windows and any tips for doing the inside (my window frames have small overlaps when closed that look difficult to paint without sticking) Thanks again brother!
Hey Trent. Appreciate you watching on! Yeah I have a more recent video that goes more into detail. Hopefully that will help a little more. 🤙
Good Job, thanks so much for sharing
Thank you Mahandma
Great video. This is on my to do list at some stage. Oh had to mute the TV when you was scraping the frame 🙉
Well done josh
Great video buddy
Legend mate. thank you 🙏
great video mate. greetings from california. i like the way you wrapped the windows. i usually do it in one solid piece. but it kind of wastes paper a bit. i actually enjoy painting . also filming while working gets tricky sometimes. sometime i dont want to film but then i regret it when dont film. Hats off to you for filming and working its harder than it looks. i often feel as if people think i am talking to myself. haha but i do it any ways. thanks for the video Bru! maybe we can have a chat sometime...
Appreciate it mate. Much love from Newcastles. Australia 🌊🌞 yeah its not that easy filming and painting at the same time and can take twice as long to do the job fir that reason. Setting up to get the right angles can be frustrating when you need to just get the job done. But all worth it when the jobs complete and you got it looking 🔥 in person and on footage. If your on insta give us a follow and have a chat🙏🤙 peace
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Josh, awesome mate. Question please; we have windows that have been painted over and I want to remove this paint without damaging the original colour, what product would you recommend? Cheers in advance,
You are a legend and what a great video. Inspirational and simple for us DIYers🙂 I have some blue powder coated windows that I am going to tackle (about 20 all up). Like some previous questions, I was wondering if the paint on the existing windows is in good condition I was hoping to not sand or use primer, but will do so if it is a better finish. Cheers mate and thanks again🙂
All sorted - I read your response to one of the other comments so I going with a light sand, no primer and 2 top coats - Thanks again 🙂
Good video thankyou!!
Thank you Luis🙏
Great video I’m going to give this a go
Awesome Grant. Good luck mate
Thanks for sharing
Nice work Josh, I can only get a hold of new white joinery … do you need to scrape it back and prime it before coats of black?
Nice work lad! I've got an old conservatory I'm considering giving it a facelift. Its natural aluminum so no scraping i suppose... Just need to wait for this lockdown to finish!
Nice one bro. Definitely makes it easier when they are bare ally💯 let me know how they go🤙
This is fantastic Josh. I googled to find out what I could do to update my old, brown, aluminium window frames and landed on your video. So awesome! I now have the confidence to give it a go, but would love to get my hands on your paper taping gadget. How brilliant is that? Anyway, you're an inspiration. Thank you.
That's awesome I have faith with following my direction you will have it covered. Good luck with it all. You can get the masker, tape and paper from most paint stores or bunnings🙂👍
How did they come out?
@@TheSeancassady 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great job Thankyou.
Thank you Patricia 🙏
Awesome work. I feel like there needs to be a Shaka meter in the corner of the screen 🤙 😂
Great video! I have a confidence now to do mine. I have a question, I have a massive 3.3m x 1.2m window with two openings on each ends and middle is seperated. And I have two of them. How many cans of spray do you think I would need? Cheers!
I’m a painter myself. Great work 👏👌🏻
Awesome mate. Appreciate you watching on 🙌
great vid josh
Cheers 🙏🤙
Yay, an Australian channel 🙌🏻
🙏🙏
Legend 🤙🏻
Thanks for the tutorial Josh. I wanted to ask, would you remove the window sash on each frame and pop rivet them back in after paining the frame and sash separately? Or spray with with the sash closed and then when dry open the and spray in between where the paint would not get when the window is closed?
That taping gun is unreal, must make your life so much easier
It is awesome isn't it! I wondered what the hell it was...then when he started using it WOW what a time saver!
its the best machine ever and saves so much time
Thanks. More confident now. Off to bunnings
Really helpful, would be great if you added a side by side before and after at the end of the vid for easy comparison. Thanks!
Thanks Rose, I'm sure to do an updated video, so will definitely be doing this. Appreciate the advice 🙏
Thanks so much for this, just brought a house and it has bare aluminium windows ✅
This video is definitely going to come handy then. Congrats on the house & good luck with the painting 🙌 thanks for watching
Love that you include us painting ladies. Would you mask off any exposed rubber seals around the frames? Thanks
Gotta include the ladies 💯 i usually tape up the rubber but on these windows the rubbers was really dry so I thought it would be best to go over. Would last longer for sure.🙏
Love this video, is there any products can replace the spay paint, my problem is I need to paint inside the house, too much preparation and can be messy with spray paint. Thanks a lot!
Thanks may
I would do the exact same process interior & exterior. There isn't much prep going from inside to out. Cheers josh
What about for sliding windows? Do you have to take them out so you can get full coverage?
Great video Josh, you make it look so easy..... hope to get the old boy onto our shitty coloured brass anodised window frames. House just got painted in Grey Bonnet timber upstairs and lexicon 1/4 white over bricks downstairs and Woodland grey on gutters /roof. which would be the better colour for windows the white or grey?
Thank you🙏 sounds like a awesome colour scheme. I would recommend white. Hope this help on your decision.
Nice job Josh. I've been painting my powder coated aluminum window, however I am using Rustguard Quick Dry Epoxy satin. With my old Little Beaver spray gun and its coming up a treat. Just wondering what you might use to treat any corrosion on the aluminum and any deep pitting?
Thank you
I'm sure your method they would be c coming up awesome also. The Windows I do in this process they do come up like factory💯 I like to use dulux metelshield ZINC primer for any badly corroded, pitted areas after a good sand.
Nice bruv!
Nice work brother 👍
Appreciate it brother 🙏
Great video mate! Question - i’m thinking of doing the same but internally for old brown aluminium windows which i think are powder coated. They are in decent condition and was wondering if i need to scrape it back to the bare metal before priming or would a rub with scotch brite and clean with metho spirits be enough to give it adequate adhesion?
hello! i would just give it a light sand with 120G and then clean them with the method. Then give them a prime and two top coats
Linbides for life 🙌
Damn this is awesome video. Wish you lived at GC! Need the ugly creamy yellow aluminium windows that I have changed to black :(
I'm sure you could tackle them yourself but if your not feeling confident. We will be making a trip up after all the restrictions are lifted. Might be able to check them out for you. Kind regards josh
Hi Josh do you take the tape and paper off when still wet or do you let it dry first
Nice video mate.
Thank you brother 🙏🤙
Might be a stupid question.
Do you also paint the black rubber seal or do you tape that up too
Thanks so much for the tutorial , super useful.
I have some questions, our current windows are mission brown and I want to paint them white, will I need to do extra coats if that’s the case ?
Where do I get me one of those masking thingy’s?
And do I still need to scrape and sand the aluminium if it’s not corroded ?
Thanks in advance 🙏😊🤙
Awesome thanks
With the spray you should get really good coverage so maybe just see how it goes. If the windows are in good condition just a light sand clean & dust would be good enough with a etch prime🙏
This is a great video, thankyou for including us "girls" too :) quick question, I need to do all my interior frames what do I do about the locks and handles on the sliders etc that don't look easy to remove?
Thank you Wendy. Definitely gotta include all the girl's out there! A lot of the time you can take out the sliding windows and the lock/latch can simply slide off. This is not the case for all window's. If this isn't going to work they will need to be taped up before painting. Hope this is helpful. Kind regards Josh
Great video! where can I get one of those tape/paper dispensers? I have a lot of windows that will go from black to white?
It's a 3M dispenser you can get them drop a dulux shop or bunnings
Hi, we are doing some ranch sliders. What do you do when it comes to the base & top rails where the door slides.
Hi Terri, just the same process and products just give extra sand and primer coats before top coating. And let it cure as long as you can before sliding. Cheers
What if the coating on my windows is not flaky but actually perfect? The problem is I hate the colour... do I need to scrap the old coat first still or can I just prime it and paint over it?
Hey Josh thanks heaps for your videos. I’m about to start the process of painting all of our windows. Just one question, I would have thought I needed to remove the window that slides and paint in the tracks and the bottom of the sliding window frame??
Hi Kirsty, thank you for watching! Yes most definitely you can take out the sliding windows paint it out & the tracks and pop it straight back in all finished. Good luck on the repaint 🙏
Thank you for a great easy-to-follow vid. I have anodised aluminium frames (only two windows) so no powder coating. I’m going to replace the fly screens as they are pitted and falling apart. There’s nothing to scrape off the frames, so would it be best to just sand and use the etch primer before the top coats? Thanks in advance!
yes that's exactly what I would do!
Thanks Josh
Thanks Josh, we’ve just had our place rendered and are needing to paint the render and window frames. Which would you do first?
Thanks
Hi Kiara
I would usually say walls first & window's last but it can be hard taping up render. So I would spray window's first leave for a few days get a low tack tape and tape up window's do this render window surrounds then romove tape from window's straight away. Hope this helps & good luck 🙏
I’m thinking of painting my bronze olive anodised windows but they sliding windows what do you do with the tracks?
Awesome video mate. Just one question. When should I remove the tape and paper? When it’s completely dry or can it be removed while still drying? Cheers
Appreciate it mate thank you🙏 I like to take my tape of during the drying process. 💯 percent
Great video. Did you mask the rubber seals around the glass or they are ok to paind over?
Sorry for the late reply depending on the condition of the seal if it's in good condition tape over it but If it's not the best tape to the glass and paint it out ✌
Hey Josh - thanks so much for the video. Just wondering, we bought the flat vivid white instead of the gloss vivid white. Do you think this will have much of an impact or will the finish be just as nice as with the Gloss?
Cheers
Hi Sophie,
I would recommend a flat finish/ matte. I would definitely go a satin finish. Could you return them?
Looks good! I need to get rid of our mission brown painted windows... Yuck!
mission brown is so old school. glad you will get rid of them
Out of all the windows have 2 or 3 where the bottom sash area has rusted, but are still solid. What do you recommend to take the rust off before priming?
Hi Ray. I would give it a good scrap down and wire brush the put a anti- rust primer. Etch prime over the whole window including back over the anti- rust primer, and two top coats✌
Hey Josh, thanks for the video. Very helpful. Quick question, do I need to scrap or sand if the aluminium frame is fine i.e no defects or corrosion. We just want to change the colour. Much appreciated 👍🏼
Hi mate. Glad you dig the vid. Just a light sand & dust will be perfectly fine. Hope this helps legend 🙏
