  • The NVA shelter half is a classic in germany. In former east germany you will probably find several of these tarps in pretty much every house. Here I want to show you some things you can do with it.

    What I forgot to mention: If you use a classic US-ALICE-pack in medium-size, this tarp fits perfectly into the gap between your back and the rucksack without bothering you, due to the space caused by the ALICE-frame. Therefore you can carry it on the outside of your backpack and can save space in your backpack for other stuff.

    Great video! Thanks a lot for mentioning that it is an improved version of the Plash, btw. I bought a few of those NVA shelter-halfs back in the 1990s and they still serve me to the present day. Besides it is an excellent and simple camouflage pattern for central Europe woodland regions, for sure. Some NVA-gear was very well thought out and simple to use for the soldier in the field. It was really good stuff. Another piece of NVA-gear I use during winter is the cold-weather suit, ... the one with the braces :-) ... I love it.
    Another use for such a shelter-half is to use it as a replacement for a stretcher, to carry wounded comrades.
    The only thing I dislike about it are the aluminium buttons, as they tend to break over the years ... ehm ... decades.
    What You did not show are the original tent pegs and the tent poles. The pegs were made from aluminium casting so they are lightweight and pretty sturdy. The poles were made from wood with metal connectors, therefore also lightweight. I wish they had also made the poles from aluminium-tubes, which they did not. Well, they made the coins of their currency from aluminium, therefore I guess not enough aluminium was left to make tent-poles for the NVA. :-)

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for watching! To be honest I never really had problems with the buttons, and I'm not careful when using these tarps and use them for everything rough, as we do around here. But yeah, the original tent poles and pegs suck... hard. They always break and are not that great in general. Also most people Ive asked would say that the NVA gear was anything but "well thought out and simple to use" haha. But it was the cheapest thing available and "good enough" for the average men in the DDR, the higher-ups had better gear, like a mummy-sleeping bag and other luxuries. I also had one of those cold-weather suits, they can be pretty nice until they get wet because of snow :D
      Youre probably right about the aluminium, guess they used it all for coins, buttons and messkits haha

    Yes they did not reinvented the wheel, but I think the NVA gear was much, much more German-like than the gear of the Bundeswehr..If you take a close look at the NVA gear and their uniforms you will notice the "original" German style of it...even the NVA Belt is almost exactly like the German ones of the 19th century, WWI and WW2.
    I think it has to be appreciated that the NVA managed to preserve their German heritage in their uniforms and equipment.

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  Před 4 měsíci

      I agree with that point. Though I don't think the preservation of the german heritage was the point they were trying to make with their equipment. With the whole process of the denazification full in progress after WWII, its pretty safe to assume that national pride was very low on the list of things they wanted to preserve.
      Even though most of the gear the NVA used was supplied by the UDSSR, the uniforms were AT LEAST heavily inspired by the Wehrmachtsuniform. Hard to say if they just used left-over uniforms from the Wehrmacht and changed them up a little, but its not unreasonable to think they did.
      After all, the DDR was pretty broke all the time but wanted to do everything possible to look superior to the us-troops of the west. Even if that meant their soldiers wore nazi uniforms...
      Thanks for watching by the way and have a great day :)

  • @cyngaethlestan8859
    @cyngaethlestan8859 Před 4 lety +1

    Thank you for the video. it is intersting to see foreign equipment. You should try to buy a British 58 poncho, much better than this design. It can be used as a poncho, (with hood,) groundsheet, basha and was also designed to clip to the 58 sleeping bag. (If you can find a good one the 58 sleeping bag is also good but you must get the 'long' size unless you are very short.)

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for watching!
      I think I saw the 58 issue poncho before, but I think it was out of plastic fiber, wasnt it? That brings alot of downsides in terms of durability. I for myself came to really like the polish shelter half too, the great thing about canvas is the fireproofness and durability, if its worth it for someone in terms of more weight and less waterproofness, that's something everyone needs to choose for themselves. But ive also seen some people return to using these canvas army tarps because they want to reduce their use of potential microplastics. Which is also an interesting concept.
      Especially old milsurp plastic is often known to be extra-cancerous (see the old bw poncho)

    Great work with that video! Just out of curiosity, are you in Germany by any chance? I just havent seen many german outdoor channels.
    By the way, I own the two of the Polish version of those ponchos. I button them up together and use 3 branches to make a tripod that I can tie the ponchos to so i get a tent.

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  Před 5 lety +2

      Yes, I'm german, the reason may be because there are not that many english speaking german outdoor channels. Well, there are, probably, but they are not that well known haha.
      The polish army tent is awesome! I also got a big one. The halfes are perfect to make a large rainponcho and a super not too uncomfortable shelter. I just got to test them after I made this video, otherwise I would have told the people that in my opinion the polish army shelter half is far superior to the NVA Zeltbahn or the plash palatka.
      Thank you very much for watching and have a beautiful day!

    Has really no one ever considered the FACT that the NVA Zeltbahn is not derived from some obscure Russian thing, but that it is an improved version of the Modell 1915 Zeltbahn of the German Imperial Army...?!!!

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  Před 4 měsíci

      Well, don't really know if its a "fact", but I know a bit about the gear of the NVA, which was heavily influenced by russian military gear for obvious reasons.
      The plash palatka just has the advantage of being documented to have been used since at least 1894 and is pretty much the same design as the NVA Zeltbahn.
      Other than that, there are various desings of Zeltbahnen/shelter halves and they all share similarities. Its not really like they reinvented the wheel with that one imo.

    how bad is the water-proofness? I've seen couple of tests of the Polish and Russian tarps and they were dry to touch from the inside in the rain. The outside was soaked for a whole day.

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  Před 2 lety

      Well after all it IS just heavy canvas. So it will absorb water a bit and will be heavy. Also if its not sunny it will take a while to dry. It´s definitly not to be used as a blanket, but it will, in my experience, stay waterproof even if totally soaked, unless you touch the inside.

      @@BasedGnome I think yours might be an older that over time, lost the silicon water-proofing that they originally used on these. I have a few that I got from Varastukuela that were like new and water beads off of the surface of those. In fact, I took one and stood in the shower for 20 minutes and not a drop of water soaked into the outside of the canvas. Oh, and thanks for the video. I enjoyed it. Cheers, Jason

      @@RockyMountainBushcraft tbh I don't know if they were impregnated at all, but I highly doubt it because the nva was not in the position to spend money on that stuff. The tarpdesign itself is very old and reaches back to the roman era afaik. If they were impregnated I guess its most likely waxed. But I'm not sure.

      @@BasedGnome Yeah, Varustuekala (spelled right?) claimed they were treated at the factory. Based on my experience using many different kinds of canvas, my NVA Tarps act like they were treated with silicon.

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  Před 2 lety

      @@RockyMountainBushcraft I did some research, apparently the nva tarps were treated with a bath of acetic alumina and then left to dry, after that they usually got a coating of wax, but I honestly don't think the wax part applies to every tarp, as my tarps didn't seem like they've been waxed at all. But the part about the canvas growing when wet to get more waterproof still applies, its a very neat design but still heavy 😬
