That’s the best Lavvu demo on you tube. I can understand how it’s set up and transforms from tent to poncho and back. Think I will watch it again and maybe order an army surplus set.
Tip for all tents of this style: the first time you set up, take a piece of paracord with a loop and measure out the length from the centre pole to each peg point and either cut to length or mark it with a knot. Next time you set up, you can use the cord to find your peg out points.
The best demonstration on the lavvu bushwacker, excellent. Matt bigmonster is exellent but he would be being Polish and he gives a history of the whole concept of the LAVVU worth viewing.

Got my first night in a lavvu I just bough I can’t wait, just need a dog now and then my setup is complete, excellent video, hikers pole is a great idea for sizing etc.
I measured the length of the pole needed and sewed a small marker point at the front of the lavvu so I didnt need to take a pole and you get the right length which does make a difference as the rain rolls off better if the tent is tight. Some great ideas Bushwacker man -thanks!

I’ve got one set of two ponchos there’s a Swedish guy who uses three, I’m gonna fork out and get another he makes some real cool little dwellings with them! Plus I’m used to the plus 40kg tabbing weight pack, that is a point I would add because these are heavy and if your out multiple nights and these get wet, as would the rest of your kit...it all just got a fair bit heavier just make sure you have the legs to carry it all
I set mine up in snow a couple weeks back. The ground was frozen so my stakes/pegs wouldn’t go in well. Tripod ‘inside’ would have worked great!! I should have thought of that before I bent my pegs! Lol And I may try anchoring the corners to a log or large stones when I go in snow next time.. to hold the perimeter in place when pegs won’t go in the frozen soil. Thanks

we have made a raised bed type in wet weather , the has to be bigger than the floor of the lavvu then we make a quad pod to hold it up. give it try in joy

I purchased the XL. I am also 5'8" and I cannot use mine as a Poncho because it is too big. I am okay with that since I wanted the XL for a tent. I could use mine like you did at the end just to hunker down during a storm.
Good video man. Love my Lavu. As a single man open shelter and as a poncho (sit and watch small game shelter). I've only have two remarks. One critic. You waer your poncho inside out! The 'shoulder flaps' must be on the inside. It looks less cool but it's done with a reason. They protect touching your shoulders and back against the outer water resistant layer. They otherwise will leak on you. The armholes in this position will also leak that way. The flaps are desigded to cover the armholes. Second: Is more of a tip I miss in all videos about the polish lavu tents. If you are tall; buy a Lavu poncho with 3 grommits on row at the bottom. The are the longest. When the lavu is to be used as a tent I recomment the 3 grommit version too (a little bit more space inside) and buy at least two lavu poncho at the same size. (1, 2 or 3 grommits)
Really happy to see you have it the right way out..........apart from when wearing it as a poncho. The shoulder flap always goes on the inside, whether used as a tent or as a poncho. If you look, there are less stitching/seams for water to ingress when the shoulder flap is inside. It also helps with the phenomenon of water leaking through canvas when the inside is touched by anything. Finally, the arms and their flaps are designed to keep the water from dribbling in when the poncho is used the right way round. An excellent video though, very informative! I love my lavuu, have also got the Hungarian version, it is camouflaged (really cool design), though not as well designed and slightly smaller. Don’t know if you know, but, the best way to waterproof it, is to set it out in the rain, get it wet, then allow to dry. Repeat this process at least 4 times (the more the better). This allows the fibres in the fabric to swell naturally, which tightens the weave and prevents water from getting through. There is a really good Facebook group: Polish and Hungarian Lavuu Owners Worldwide. Loads of great info, good people and support!
I've done a few festivals in my lavvu, no quite big enough for my camping bed, feet stick out the door!! I love taking it up the woods with my son just to eat some sandwiches in :) great video mateeee! i want to try the tripod set up

Bushwacker Man would you know which size that one is? The ones I have seen are measured in height or sizes 1,2,3 but confusingly not diameter, so I don’t know which one to get. I’m 5’ 9” if that helps. Many thanks and looking forward to more of your videos. :)
I like my Soviet and East German shelter half tarps (the German a bit more so than the Russian) but these Polish lavvu tarps seem to be better suited to pitching as an actual weatherproof shelter. The more I've learned about lavvu shelters in general, the more I like them. Cheers, Gareth
Just curious you don't have or like a center pole there are no trees to tie a ridge line so were do you find tree 3 poles which are part of a tree but there are no trees to tie a ridge line but I fancy buying this type of tent great video 10 plus..

Good video Man! I'd put an old sock or something like that between the top of tent stick and the canvas. For a tent peg I would just use an inverted stick with a Y branch on it. Like this > /l
@@BushwackerMan yeah we got record snow in Minnesota due to the Arctic Jet Stream slowing down from abrupt global warming. arctic-news.blogspot.com so then I discovered a Saami Norwegian making Lavvu tents here but I already ordered a Pomoly tent being sent out of Guangzhou. So it's the same design as a German Lavvu tent. Only the German tent does not have a stove jack and costs $730 US dollars!! Wow. OK I figured it out - the German company is a one man operation and he posted his design on the site and said anyone else can make it on their own if they want. And China ran with it! And he doesn't seem to realize about the Pomoly tents yet. Oops. I posted a couple comments about it - on the German tent vids - or maybe just one. Didn't really want to crush him about it.
Just a thought, if there are no trees to put up a ridge line, are there likely to be three long branches to make a tripod? Or do you keep them in your backpack? :)

Is that the TBS boar, I have the original stainless steel version, even though it had its critics I've never had a problem with it, great for processing wood.
Yeah you'd only use half of it though as they're so thick and dark....I use mine most like this with a small fire just within arm's reach next to a small river 😍

There is one another way how to lift that top of lavvu. Personaly I use a bipod made from 2 sticks or 2 walking poles inside my lavvu. Makes much more space inside.
there were some awesome ideas for setup a lavvu, the thing with separation I was not aware of, quite useful. You almost looked like Sherlock Holmes missing only the hat and the pipe. 👍 What about the OZtent, should we never see that in real action.

Hi! Good video. I like this tent also. Sligh note. In polish we don't have and use that word: lavvu ;-). We speak Polish for it: pałatka (read: p.a.w.a.t.k.a, better check the pronunciation of a word on translator) Lavvu.. is a Sami tent, a kind of tipi, lower tipi, more resistant to strong wind and this is a word from the Sami language (Scandinavian Lapland). Funny journey of words, verbal/naming mess. We (Polish people) made the military raincoat which is called "pałatka" (two are made into a tent), and there is a word for it in English: tipi, tepee but almost everyone calls it: "lavvu" - Sams tent. So the name "polish lavuu" give's U polish sams tipi/tent ;-)
Any concerns regarding the waterproofing chemicals and fire retardants used on these. New data suggests that tent chemicals can easily migrate to the air and to the skin of the user. Ultimate risk is not known. These canvas tents might be better....or worse. If anyone knows more on the history of these I would like to know.

I'm just a new user of the Polish Lavvu. The exterior tripod system is defiantly one that I will be trying. Great ideas for setups. New Subscriber.

The cone would just get flatter unless you had a opening in the top.

its about 3.5kg, you could stretch out if you pitch the lavuu lower and yes it stands up to heavy wind and rain 👍👍

There is one another way how to lift that top of lavvu. Personaly I use a bipod made from 2 sticks or 2 walking poles inside my lavvu. Makes much more space inside.

there were some awesome ideas for setup a lavvu,
the thing with separation I was not aware of, quite useful. You almost looked like Sherlock Holmes missing only the hat and the pipe. 👍

Are they draughty round the edges?
Yes i can, i put debris around the edges to stop the draught in windy conditions 👍👍

Hi! Good video. I like this tent also. Sligh note. In polish we don't have and use that word: lavvu ;-). We speak Polish for it: pałatka (read: p.a.w.a.t.k.a, better check the pronunciation of a word on translator) Lavvu.. is a Sami tent, a kind of tipi, lower tipi, more resistant to strong wind and this is a word from the Sami language (Scandinavian Lapland). Funny journey of words, verbal/naming mess. We (Polish people) made the military raincoat which is called "pałatka" (two are made into a tent), and there is a word for it in English: tipi, tepee but almost everyone calls it: "lavvu" - Sams tent. So the name "polish lavuu" give's U polish sams tipi/tent ;-)

I would like to see the shelter you can make with 1 half.
Any concerns regarding the waterproofing chemicals and fire retardants used on these. New data suggests that tent chemicals can easily migrate to the air and to the skin of the user. Ultimate risk is not known. These canvas tents might be better....or worse. If anyone knows more on the history of these I would like to know.
