    • @TheMrVengeance
      @TheMrVengeance Před 2 lety +58

      I mean, yes and no.
      There is no copyright *on the composition,* so you can freely perform it without having to pay royalties to Bach. But each individual performance of it *_IS_* under copyright. So if the Chicago Symphony Orchestra played Bach in 2018, the recording of that is 100% under copyright and not free to use.
      So if cartoons want to use Bach they either need to; get a very old recording that's also out of copyright; or record it themselves; or buy it from someone.

    • @horsewithnoname12345

      @@TheMrVengeance of course. They created their own recordings.

    • @TheMrVengeance
      @TheMrVengeance Před 2 lety +13

      @@horsewithnoname12345 - Honestly I think a bigger reason might be that any orchestra will already know those pieces.
      If you already go to the cost and trouble of hiring an orchestra to come in and recording them, the cost of buying or commissioning a new original piece of music for the cartoon wouldn't be too much.
      But the result of that would be that the orchestra will need to learn and rehearse that piece. And all those extra hours for all the musicians and the studio space...
      I think THAT might be the inhibiting cost thing. Not so much the copyright on the composition.
      If you get them to do Bach, they just come in, play the piece for the 1000th time, it's routine. Boom, done.

      So the tunes I associate with "circus music" are called Sabre Dance and Entry of the Gladiators?
      This is a bigger headtrip than that "Christmas" tune turning out to be In The Hall Of The Mountain King, which is now also tied up with Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairies. ┐(´д`)┌ヤレヤレ

    I think it's so crazy that we all actually know more classical music than we thought

    • @SobrietyandSolace

      That's why I laugh when people say it's not relevant to their lives. We wouldn't have soundtrack music/movie scores if it weren't for classical romantic, baroque etc. So much pop music borrows as well like that Maroon 5 song that's literally Canon in D and doesn't try to hide it.

    One good example of a song you hear all the time in old Looney Tunes cartoons but probably never knew the title was the one they used all the time to depict any kind of machinery in motion (i.e., factory settings). It was called Powerhouse, originally composed by Raymond Scott and adapted by Carl Stalling for Looney Tunes.

    Tom and Jerry will forever be my favourite for making me fall in love with classical music. It's so good and clearly shows how even without dialogue the story or emotion can still be conveyed through the music and facial expressions. Wish more shows were like them.
