    I think it's important to underline that:
    -Sanremo is NOT a selection for Eurovision. It's the biggest Italian song contest. The winner CAN choose to represent Italy in Eurovision
    I think this is important because singers don't sing "trying to impress Europe" but to present their work and their music to the Italian audience
    -in Sanremo staging is not a thing. It's only about the song. That's why there's "a weak staging"
    -this year in Sanremo there were many singers that had the same or even a wider fanbase than Mahmood and Blanco. So I don't really think that the fact they won is only connected to their fame

    to Deban: in Sanremo there's no staging, it's called "Festival della Canzone Italiana", canzone means song and for us it's all about this, the performance is just a secondary issue. I understand that in Eurovision things are different but Sanremo is not a selection. So we will know the staging in May and remember also that Amar Pelos Dois won just with Salvador voice❤

      It is very clear that Deban doesn't understand music, I've read/heard many comments from him that were quite frankly baffling. Maybe someone should remind him that one hears music with ones EARS and NOT their eyes!
      I appreciate that there are many that appreciate the visuals but to Italians it's about the song, the lyrics and emotion not the visuals. I would even go as far as to say that those people who keep talking about staging and visuals should not be commenting on a song because it is clear that they are not LISTENING!

Salvador shocked a lot of people when he stood up against "fast food music" in his speech but it's exactly what you're saying. in Italy you have festival della canzone which is the same as the portuguese festival da canção. same principles. it's about the music and the meaning, not about the stage or the fireworks. simplicity and quality won when Salvador won, so Italy is already winning for the same reason!

    Sanremo is about music. It's about the songs. Not the staging. For the Eurovision, sure they're going to make something different and big for the performance, considering Italy is also the host country. A good song, is everything you need first. And here we got one. (Again.)

  • @kokylinda
    @kokylinda Před 2 lety +235

    It is quite offensive of Deban to say that “Brividi” won Sanremo because of Mahmood’s international renown, and implying that the win was a calculated move (by the organisers of Sanremo? The Italian state? Not sure who he was pointing fingers at) to use his fame to inch up the Eurovision ranking. If anything, I can already see how Mahmood’s fame is DEFINITELY going to play against him, since everyone will similarly lament the unfairness towards other lesser known ESC contestants.
    Italians value Sanremo much more than Eurovision, and so they focus on the creative and artistic side of music rather than preparing a song and staging “suitable” for Eurovision, with focus given to the orchestra and composers (introduced before each song). Staging is minimal or absent in Sanremo (though obviously it would be important when singing to an international audience that can’t understand your lyrics). There were a lot of other singers in the festival with just as strong a local fanbase, with previous Sanremo wins under their belts.
    But there’s a reason Italy literally lost its s**t when this song was released, and everyone instantly knew they were going to win. For one, when you actually understand the lyrics it is, obviously, a different experience - and the google transaltion to English don’t do them justice. When you are used to listening to both artists regularly, you also can appreciate right away how each made the song “theirs”, and making it work harmoniously despite having such different styles.

    The official video shows that they are talking about their respective love story (Mahmood with a man, Blanco with a woman) but the live performances were much more ambiguous than the video and, as you rightly say, most of ESC public won't understand the lyrics anyway.
    That said, Deban is ENTIRELY off target in his comment.
    He takes for granted that Mahmood and Blanco were "selected" to go to ESC and calls it complacent.
    But Sanremo is NOT an ESC selection.
    It is a contest in its own right and it is Italy's most important one.
    The winner is offered the chance to go to ESC but they can refuse. Mahmood and Blanco had to win Sanremo first and to win Sanremo you need to get voted by people and by a panel. It's not a decision of the broadcasting company.

    I understand those who believe that it's just another generic ballad. However, here we also have much greater musical quality than the average ballads and the lyrics form an even more important and serious message than most of this specific genre of songs we've seen in this contest. Afterall, Sanremo is a million times more important contest for Italians and ESC is just the icing on the cake, just a secondary "decoration", lets say, hence why every single entry they sent in ESC each year is spotless and (almost) always makes the top 10.

    Reasons contributing to Italy's great ESC track record:
    - most melodic language in Europe
    - Big population; Italy's the 5th biggest country by population after France, Germany, UK and Russia - more people means more potential for great songs
    - Italy has a long tradition in music from way back in the classicism till more recently with brilliant singers such as Luciano Pavarotti; music simply runs through their veins
    - Sanremo is not a selection for a song that will try to impress Europe; it's a festival that chooses songs that best represent Italian people's taste; their winners are almost always unique and authentic, so they always perform well at ESC. Ironically, the biggest reason why Italy is so good at ESC is because they're not actually trying to be the best at ESC.

      Yes. This is really worrying. If artists competing in Sanremo Festival will start to write their songs according to Eurovision rules, Sanremo essence will be lost. Actually, this year in Sanremo there was an entry that wrote a song, subtly aiming to capture Eurovision fans attention. I don't want to name the entry. But I was highly disappointed. The song was good, but their 'hidden' agenda made me really appreciated it less . Plus the song is practically 3 minutes. On the contrary, I admired Irama: despite the fact he was successful last year among Eurovision fans, this year he proposed a ballad (clearly for Sanremo and not aiming for Eurovision public). A real artist doesn't wrap a song.

      @antonioconte2839 Před 2 lety +7

      Exactly. I'm italian and confirm it. We prefer the quality of the voices, the lyrics and the sounds over to a stage performance. And also Sanremo is not a selection for ESC. It's one of the anciest musical events in the entire world and has its own life; from 2015 the winner of Sanremo has the possibility to represent Italy.

    With regards to staging I think you missed the point. Sanremo is a festival in which you sing with an orchestra and every artist competing shares the stage with everyone else and with no video or computerised enhancements. You can argue it is very classical but it is all about the quality of the music, not the staging.

    Deban, you have to know better Sanremo Festival before talking, As you know, Sanremo Festival is not the italian national selection for eurovision. It is the festival of Italian Music. No attention is given to the stage because the winner is best song and not the best performance. If you compare Maneskin's Sanremo and Eurovision performance, you can easily see it. Meanwhile, Diodato e Mahmood in 2019 and 2020 competitions had not a great fanbase. Even if Elisa's song was my favourite, I think Mahmood and Blanco have a beutiful song with great lyrics.
    P.S. Blanco has a relationship with a girl at the moment. I think the correct interpretation is that the song explore difficulties within different cuoples. Anyway, Music is art and everybody can interpretate it whatever you want.

They accepted to take part to the competition for many reasons, i know that Amadeus specifically asked Gianni Morandi if he could participate as a contestant instead of just being a special guest and Morandi had no fear saying yes. He's so nice lol (he also gifted us with legendary memes during these recent years 😂🤟✨)
      All the others are renown artists from this decade and the past one.
      The new entries (IF IM NOT MISTAKEN) that took part in the competition by making It to the podium of Sanremo giovani (SanremoYoung) are : Yuman, Tananai and Matteo Romano.

I accept everyone's ideas and criticisms, so I also accept his, on some things I also agree with him. But I don't like the way he says it, a little arrogant! He was arrogant, even last year with the Maneskins, he called Zitti e buoni ".. quite a predictable shouty ballad". I am happy that many have not judged them negatively as he did. However, this makes us understand that perhaps his musical tastes are not exactly trendy. I congratulate the boy with the black sweatshirt, he is always prepared and informed, he always has a nice and positive attitude, and this is the reason why here at every Eurovision I keep watching Wiwibloggs' videos.When Deban will manages to get 20 million views in 24 hours, we'll talk about it again.
