Hello, Dr. Lori!... I was wondering if you do appraisals on personal art pieces? Though I have NO intention of quitting (!), I'm a senior citizen, with severe disabilities, who's contemplating what to do with some very unique, very special, art that I've done. I know I could donate some items to a museum - BUT (lol!) - I'm also dirt poor and could use the extra income. I'm pretty darn good with art... but stink with price tags. Thank you for all the wonderful videos and knowledge you share - I'm enjoying it all immensely!
@ DR. LORI... Okay, I know that you are super busy and are always running in 15 different directions BUT you seriously should start an online antique salvage website! You definitely have the know how & the following. It would be another source of income for you and an extremely useful resource for us as well as others. Win-win! Plus, if we're being honest, I'm not sure if you know how to NOT go a mile a minute and take a break lol. You are always go, go, go. And you enjoy helping people & empowering us with knowledge. Providing a website that would make our antiques whole again and would in turn increase their value would be Incredible!! I think you stumbled across a winner Doc 🤔🧐🤑👏👏👏
@@DrLoriV Well, if you ever decide to slow down on one of your other 15...LOL This really is a fantastic idea nonetheless! It's a shame someone with the wherewithal can't get this project started. You'd want it to be someone knowledgeable, someone that loves helping others & they have the time. You fit 2 of the 3 criteria! Brilliant idea that I truly hope we see come to fruition because it would become a Godsend of a resource!!
OK, this is so strange. I just found the same Lalique Nemours bowl at a Goodwill for $3.99 with an additional 30% off because it was senior day! They obviously didn’t know what it was. I thought it was so unusual but it was very heavy so I put it back on the shelf and walked away. For some reason, I walked back to it after remembering hearing that something of quality is usually heavy. I almost didn’t buy it because it was so heavy but something told me to buy it. When I got home I did an image search and immediately saw the Nemours bowl. I peeled the price tag off on the bottom of the bowl and sure enough, there was the signature! I was so excited and couldn’t believe it!
I am so curious as to the significance of your Kermit the Frog? I’ve noticed your background objects are always changing but he remains a constant focal object . Our Family absolutely loves and collects all things from The Muppets and especially Kermit . Its so nice to see his adorable face every time we enjoy your videos !
Don't you love Kermit! I feature him soon in an upcoming video and I recently talked about him in a video on the channel here when I appeared on CBS TV in Pittsburgh, PA
@@DrLoriV I absolutely loved it, you look lovely today! I was a registered nurse in the early 90s when rheumatoid arthritis knocked me down. I got back up and began dealing in antiques, my second love. I could only afford used old price guides, but I read then like they were novels. I inherited old art pottery vases like McCoy, I would go to antique stores to feel and see the real thing. Even as a child I loved the old things in my grandparents and great grandparents houses, I wanted to see them close up and hold them. My first tiny antique booth was in the hallway of an antique mall in Forney, Texas, I quickly shot up to three large, prime booths. The bottom fell out of the market I Texas, I gave nearly everything away. I built a tiny house and opened an eBay store; this month marks my first year, I've done amazingly well in fine vintage Barbie, her clothes and accessories. I've added other vintage categories, nothing too much yet. I've not stopped all year, I have to put my shop on vacation just to get a rest. My passion for all things old won't let me rest long. I understand your passion very well. Maybe this quarter I'll break the bank; I'll rent us a protective bubble for two ol' birds on a cruise ship. We can kick back and drink drinks with umbrellas, talk about all the unbelievably awesome deals we've made. I'll be headed to your website soon, I need to get am appraisal on a washed ink art piece by Glenn Cravatt. I did find another that sold for 6 or 700.00 in the last few years. I need to leave this one to the expert! Thanks so much! I'm headed down the list! ~Tina
My values are based on what I have seen people actually pay. I just don't throw numbers around. Have you seen my Real Bargains series of videos? Many of those items have been sold at my appraised values including a plate that sold for over $1,000. The plate was found at a yard sale for $1.
Dr. Lori , Um, no lol, must be something they do? Oh thank you for sharing. I love you and your videos! I wish I had thought about my wedding ring getting appraised before we had it sized. We bought it and just had them keep it to resize it, and I always wondered if they would have changed the diamonds it. It was quite an expensive ring too. I haven’t had it checked to make sure the prongs are ok, and wondering where do I send it, do you do it? And on average what is the cost of an appraisal? Thank you

Dr Lori I could listen to you all night long. Such an interesting show!!! Seems Kermit the Frog might be one of your favorites or something because I keep spotting him in diff videos but in different parts of the room. By the way it made my mind wander back to the days of the old crayons crayons. I have a tin of old crayons crayons never been opened and it’s all the original colors. I always thought if I left it unopened that one day they may be worth something. Should I keep them ticked away? I loved the smell of crayons crayons for some reason -
Thanks for watching! Kermit will be featured in an upcoming video, maybe more since everyone seems to love him! I have an upcoming Ask Dr. Lori video answering a similar question about toys. Stay tuned!
aloha. Thank you for sharing your education/talent with us. I have a copy of The Little Minister by J.M.Barrie Copyright 1898 published by HM Caldwell where the thistle on the cover has been accidentally stamped/embossed/engraved (?) UPSIDE DOWN. Does this flaw make the book more valuable?
I was an Autograph Collector for 20+ years. I studied signatures and always had a photo taken (if allowed) when I would go to an event of the person hand signing my item. To this day, COA's make me cringe. A signature is not 100% authentic unless you were there to witness the signing. COA's mean nothing!
Thanks for your comment. I am going to address this issue more fully in an upcoming video because COAs impact the appraised value and marketing techniques for buyers and sellers. More to come.
I have been kicked out of a Facebook group for challenging someone on her “expertise “ it’s funny how they react if you ask them if they went to school and leaned stuff under an expert artist. It’s like backing them into a corner and then they all of a sudden block you and delete you because they are scared. It’s hard to feel sorry for them but sometimes I do lol.
@@DrLoriV exactly! It’s like saying my options don’t matter . You don’t get kicked out of a restaurant if you want to ask the chef where they studied culinary. Lol 🤷🏼♀️
OMG! I was in the process of asking the same question about a diamond I once owned. I had an official appraisal done and was valued at 7200. My mom wanted it so I gifted it to her. It was set in platinum. Mom wanted yellow gold and without telling me, she went and had it reset. Now Mom has passed and the ring is back with me. And it is NOT the same diamond at all. Now what should I do? Take it and the appraisal to the store that did this or to a lawyer or what? I am so mad that they took advantage of my trusting momma. Thank you so much for all you do Dr, Lori!
Alright, I have to ask. Have you ever been stumped? Unable to value an item? I remember watching one of your videos a while ago and you mentioned some people who always go to your event and try to stump you. I'm curious if they've ever been successful, I've yet to ever see you even hesitate on something. Love the videos, very entertaining!
Thank you Dr. Lori. My question is this: I am an oil painter mostly, and also some drawing and watercolor. I “store” my art on my walls. I have about 80 paintings and have decided to sell online. Currently sell by “word of mouth.” I also collect art-mostly older paintings (some are listed artists) that will need appraisal from you. When I sell online, do you think it is ok to mix a few of the older paintings from other artists along with my own paintings, or would this be confusing?
Good question. I'll be happy to answer that during an upcoming live video stream. Make sure you subscribe to the channel and ring the bell to receive notifications or keep checking the Community tab for announcements.
@ 19:50 I have always known that, I have people tell me that what I have was priced way too high on a post war Lionels and when he finally responded back to me, I told him it sold at my asking price for bthe pieces and he was really upset about it
Heeey Dr. Lori! I have my weekly question for you lol. When online resellers get an appraisal for an object they plan on listing, is it recommended to add a photo of the appraisal to help sell the item to a buyer, or should be made available to the buyer if sold, only for for the seller to keep for their records, or how exactly should an appraisal be used once the seller receives an appraisal on their item?
So if I purchased a.....let’s say a Nippon Vase. I get it appraised by the one and only Dr. Lori, I get the appraisal back and see all the details and the value. When I go to sell the vase, when I list it I should add a photo of the appraisal as well then?
@@BrandonCiCi My appraisal reports include a location where a similar piece actually sold and for how much. For example one person used it to sell their plate for $1,000. They bought it at a yard sale for $1. Of course use several photos if you can.
@@DrLoriV I understand that part but I’m asking after an item gets appraised is it ok to post a photo of the appraisal when selling the item so the potential buyer can see the appraisal or is that not a good idea. I hope that’s more clear of a question. Sorry for the confusion if any.
Hello Dr Lori, very informative video, thanks for constantly teaching us. I would like to know your thought on "value" books, like Kovels, or books written by a specific collection with values? I know times have changed, and you have to look at the year the book was produced, just wondering about your thoughts. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! I talk about price guides in detail in an article on my website. You can go there and search for "price guides". I also talk about them in one of the Ask Dr. Lori videos that has been posted or is coming up soon.
I struggle with the posting in other places, I don't want to have a lot of extra fees that are all different mainly because I can't afford it! I use EBay and marketplace groups that are geared to what I am selling but as to auction sites and estate I have no idea
I have a small piece of art by Henry Seigel Co. Looks really old. Only 3x6" on wood with small frame mounted on wood. I have pictures but I don't know where to send them?
Are there any must have reference books for vintage and antiques for the different categories/types such as glassware, crystal, pottery, patterns, identifying marks, etc. I go online and end up going down a rabbit hole. ;-) Also finding the info conflicting. Love watching you - I’m learning a lot! Thank you!
Thanks for watching! That is such a broad list of topics to cover. Plus I stress to learn to identify quality not marks. Marks are easily forged. Have you read all the articles on those topics on my website?

A few years back I purchased a Salvador Dali print at an auction. It is in a 12 x 10" matted frame. I think I paid around $40 CAD. There is partial sticker on the glass says Actua age of ?( it is a cross 2 people before it one with sword? Signed 1945) Is it worth me looking up the receipt to see what I paid and the what whole title is so I can get an evaluation on your site? or just be proud I own a Dali print? Thanks for the awesome videos, Michele

Hi, I have a question. After you appraise my items, do you send a written appraisal? And if so, when I sell that item do I send the appraisal to the buyer? Should I also make a copy for myself? Thank you.
You can request a written online appraisal to start. The report I prepare includes a location where a similar piece sold and for how much. The terms of the appraisals are listed on my website for review.
I have a quick question. I was in Venice, Italy in 1980 and bought a hand blown glass carafe with tiny cups. It has hand painted gold on the pieces. I sent it back to the states as a gift and so don't have proof of anything. Is there a way that I can prove that it is what it is if I sell the set? It's a gorgeous set but I'm trying to downsize. I don't know what to do in this situation. Love your show! Btw, I bought it from the shop that made it just off St. Mark's Square, if that makes a difference.
Hi Dr. Lori I have a question about books that are old and falling apart. How can I be certain that the book I have is not worth anything considering the pages are missing spine is broken and may or may not have mold. I like to reuse old books in crafts but I don’t want to destroy one that is rare. Thanks so much.
Value will depend on the book and it's condition. Everyone wants one answer for such broad questions and you just can't apply one answer fits all. I do answer a similar question in an upcoming Ask Dr. Lori video which may help shed some light for you. I'd have to see the books or any item for that matter since it is a case by case basis.
@@DrLoriV thank you so much! Maybe I should send you pictures of some that I have through your website. There is one that says it’s “rare” on google but I don’t trust google lol.
People use my online appraisal reports to help them sell their items. The reports include a location where a similar piece sold and for how much. Where to sell depends on many factors.
@@DrLoriV I am interested in a video discussing ivory, it almost seems like a curse when you get ivory in a jewelry jar but to destroy it doesn't seem right either.
@@DrLoriV yesssss....i see this come up a lot in FB groups and the comments are just throw it away, it has no value, its all illegal no matter what when in fact it's not all illegal and may be worth quite a bit. There is so much misinformation surrounding ivory items along with fur. I do not comment back in groups about ivory items as it causes heated arguments amongst those who know everything and can not be incorrect about anything. So maybe having a segment about ivory would be great.

@ DR.
I think you stumbled across a winner Doc
🤔🧐🤑👏👏👏
I appreciate the suggestion, but I'm not sure if I have the time for that 16th direction :) I need everyone's support to keep new videos coming!!
@@DrLoriV Well, if you ever decide to slow down on one of your other 15...LOL
This really is a fantastic idea nonetheless!
And people say you can't get good deals at Goodwill anymore :) It's out there!
My Model Doll. Still can't get pictures. Sorry. Love your knowledge.
I love that you always have Kermit with you 🥰

Watching now...I'm so happy to see you!
Hope you enjoyed it!
~Tina
is it not true that an item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it???

Thank you

@@DrLoriV looking forward to it!

I have been kicked out of a Facebook group for challenging someone on her “expertise “ it’s funny how they react if you ask them if they went to school and leaned stuff under an expert artist. It’s like backing them into a corner and then they all of a sudden block you and delete you because they are scared.

@ 19:50 I have always known that, I have people tell me that what I have was priced way too high on a post war Lionels and when he finally responded back to me, I told him it sold at my asking price for bthe pieces and he was really upset about it
Thanks for sharing your story. Yes, that is what happens :)

Heeey Dr.
Yes, add a photo to the appraisal.
@@BrandonCiCi No problem. Why would you think it's not a good idea?

I have a quick question. I was in Venice, Italy in 1980 and bought a hand blown glass carafe with tiny cups. It has hand painted gold on the pieces. How can I be certain that the book I have is not worth anything considering the pages are missing spine is broken and may or may not have mold.
