- The sixth installment of my extended video trip report for my Zion to Arches Hike (spring 2018). In this section I leave the the Paria River and visit Yellow Rock before heading over to Coyote Canyon en route to the wonderful Wahweap Hoodoos.
* re: the drone I encountered, please note that drones are currently banned from taking off or landing within Wilderness Study Areas such as Yellow Rock or the other nearby areas. In NPS areas they are only allowed with a commercial filming permit .

Wow....Yellow Rock is amazing! And so are the Wahweap Hoodoos. Why they aren't protected is mindboggling. So sad.
Yeah -- the idea that the Wahweap Hoodoos were removed from GSENM is truly mind-boggling. A closer look at the re-drawn boundaries definitely shows politics were at play more than anything else.
Loved the hoodoos and the white rocks.
Me too! Thanks for watching.
Those hoodoos in my opinion are almost cooler than the ones in Bryce, AMAZING!!!
Ha! I've watched this before and just caught the "twins" comment at 13:29. I've seen those in-person and your apt description never occurred to me!
haha -- yeah... that was early in the morning so it was a somewhat half-awake comment/joke. 😀 Thx for watching again and Happy 2020!
I really hope that you enjoyed this, it looks very fun. Thank you so much for sharing it with us!
mix a small amount of alum with the muddy water. You can get alum in the spice isle of your grocery store. It will cause all the mud to settle to the bottom in a short amount of time
Good to know. Thanks for watching and the comment.
Another great leg! I enjoyed seeing about your water filtration setup, too.
Awesome Jamal, really enjoyed it.
Awesome video Jamal
Thanks, Gera!
WTF?! Mr. Shadow didn't make an appearance. I couldn't mark the box of my Across Utah Bingo.
Yeah, he's threatening to get a new agent because I don't feature him enough. BUT... I love the idea of a BINGO game! 😉✌
Not quite sure of your route out of the Paria, but there's a good "cowboy trail" that ascends the north wall just before the big sheer faces of the Box, and heads up to rather near Yellow Rock (it goes on to Death Valley). Enjoying your videos!
Thanks! Yep -- that is the route I took up from the Paria, but when I got to the "top", I left the trail and dropped down into the canyon/gully to the east to walk along what I referred to as the "valley of color". Definitely not the quickest way probably -- but it was fun. Thanks for watching and the comment.
Hey Jamal, LOVE your videos. I'm planning to hike the Hayduke in the next year and I'm wondering how you navigate-- gps with a route and coordinate points, map and compass, etc.? I'm from Utah, have decent topo skills, I have an inReach (though I've never had to use maps on it). Thank you in advance. You have given me an extra boost of courage.
I'm a traditional paper-printed topo guy for the most part, but I do now use GAIA on my phone as well. It was initially just for logging POIs, but it is also a great quick-check to confirm navigation. Note that in much of southern Utah (and along the Hayduke), there can be many "correct" routes. 😀👍 Good luck on your hike!
@@Acrossutah thank you so much!! I'm so excited. Going to go do some prep runs through different sections before I head out. Thanks for your great videos
I wonder if the helium ballons are escaping from St George? Perhaps all the way up at Salt Lake? You would think folks would mark the point of origin before accidentally losing them.
those hoodoos are awesome! I didn't see anything like that on the hayduke.
Yeah -- the hoodoos spot is a pretty unique place, which is why I'm stunned that it was removed from the National Monument. I'm going to list this section as a Hayduke alternate on my site, but I don't expect many to do it, nor do I really recommend it, as the connections are so dry and remote.
Hey Jamal, can you point me to the research / documentation behind drones in WSA. I've been looking at this quite a bit and haven't been able to find a specific ban of drones in WSAs. Let me know if you have a source that you can share, it'd be super helpful.
Heya Sunny -- unfortunately I don't have a resource that I can easily point you to, but I can share what I've learned over the years by talking to officials, knowledgeable drone pilots, etc.. Note: I might have stated some incorrect info previously, but I try to correct that when I can where I can. Also note that much of this could be in flux as regulations change. Here is where I believe everything stands now:
-- NPS Units: drones only allowed with commercial filming permit (restricted to certain areas/times.)
-- Wilderness Areas: drones never allowed
-- Wilderness Study Areas: usage allowed in some cases based on authorization from supervising local authority. Example: if a WSA is on BLM land, the regional BLM Director can OK drone use for that specific unit.
-- Airspace: the biggest loophole to all of the above, the regulations are based on where the drone is operated, not the actual airspace. Thus a pilot can launch from a road area adjacent to a prohibited area and fly into that airspace and later return. The is becoming more and more problematic as newer drones have incredible range. Pilots are supposed to always maintain a line of site with their crafts though, but that is hard to enforce.
@@Acrossutah thanks for the quick and detailed response Jamal! It's a topic that comes up amongst my guides and guests at Dreamland Safari Tours quite a bit, which is why I've started to dig into it. Things are in flux as you say, but I always want to make sure that I'm not discounting any breadcrumbs that may lead me to important new information. Still hope to run into you out there at some point!
At my age, there is no way I can hike like you do. Did you notice any roads near by that a senior citizen could go and see these before they make a coal mine out of them? Heartbreaking with the loss of our National Parks. Greed Trumps common sense.
"It's HooDoo mania folks!"
My weird sense of humor at times must come from water/food/sleep deprivation while hiking! :)
Watching your weight melt away from video to video is crazy!
Yeah -- I think it's going to be even more obvious in the "short" edit!
