  • This installment of my Zion to Arches Hike series covers my loooong and tough stretch across the remote Kaiparowits Plateau. A detour during this 6-day segment takes me back to the Hayduke Trail where I get up and over Fiftymile Mountain to end the section. Highlights include Nipple Butte, Smoky Hollow, Needle Eye Canyon, Last Chance Wash, Navajo Canyon, Monday Canyon, and Window Wind Arch.

    I re-run your episodes in Sept. 2020. It keeps me sane. I miss Utah terribly. Couldn’t go for Moab Music Festival this year because of quarantine.

      Thanks so much! (Yeah... I'm really anxious to get back out for a big Utah hike.)

    Great hike, great landscape, not so great water sources, you really deserve your pineapples ;-) Happy hiking

    I enjoyed your water catchment strategy. Those thorny tumbleweeds are a such a hassle!
    Earlier this year I met a professional guide based out of Escalante who plans to traverse the length of Fifty Mile Mountain/Straight Cliffs some day between Collet Canyon and the Lower Route off of Fifty Mile Bench Road. Given the water sourcing and terrain he said it has never been done. Looks like the wind would be a challenge up there too.
    Thanks again for sharing your adventures here Jamal!

    Was in this part of Utah (Kanab to Moab) from Sept 7-18 2018. Coming from North Carolina where greenery and endless forests of trees are the norm, I call the Utah landscape 'naked earth'. Such beauty in rocks I've never seen. My hikes and treks were more modest than yours (to say the least). But what fun and excitement I had discovering so many canyons. Can't wait to return.

    I love watching your videos Jamal! Been watching for years. You've got some serious guts to solo hike in those remote place but I envy you! At 53 I just could never do that anymore so I live vicariously through you!! Keep it up!

    Hey, "cousin", good video, and thanks for pronouncing Kaiparowits for us. I was wondering about that.

      Haha! Yeah, I'm known to mispronounce a place or two, but... pretty sure I got that one correct! Thanks for watching!

    Just getting to your videos from this year’s marathon hike. Love this one. The cowboy etchings were a surprise, and they carved so neatly too. That fruit cup looked delicious, I might go to the market to get me some syrupy goodness. Thanks for the video!

    Fresh fruit never tasted better than when you're hiking in the desert ... that's a fact. Grapes are my favorite ... nectar of the Gods.
    I said hi to your shadow for you, lol. This video could have lasted another 24 hours ... that would have been great. Thanks for having us along ... be safe, catch you later.

    Jamal, I'm really looking forward to your next video as just weeks before you came through this area, 4 buddies and I descended hole in the rock, went up stevens, and then down fold canyon to the escalante and back. Wild wild country. I also loved this video. FYI: David Roberts writes some beautiful prose about fifty mile mountain and the kaiparowitz!

      @Acrossutah  Před 5 lety

      Very cool -- I've always wanted to do the route through Fold Canyon. Someday. There was a delay in the upload yesterday, but it should be published soon. Thanks for watching and the comment.

    nice toss of the trekking poles /CRASH/ hahaha.... what an amazing trek! i like night hiking but a rattler sure does make it dangerous// we did most of Whitney (to trail crest) last weekend, lots of night hiking on that one... so many cool sites in this vid, love the 2015 comparisons as well... sad about the Monument. Sadder still is the large group of sycophants that are still telling themselves these reductions are "no big deal" and "good for America"... Sure, it is not fair to blame it all on the current admin as much of it has been a long long process of slowly chipping away at protections but there is no denying the acceleration. We actually have people who believe coal should be part of our future again... Argh/// anyway, can;t thank you enough for taking us along. View from the peak reminds me of other desert peaks, the desert view from a mountain is very different.. the distant washes.. i love it...

    Have you hiked to Navajo Point from the southernmost trail? I'd like to try that next year.

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  Před 3 lety

      I haven't -- but I'd like to do it. On this hike I'd originally considered crossing Fiftymile Mountain farther south (via Mudholes or Steer Canyon) and if I'd done that and might have done an out-and-back to Navajo Point. But... as is often the case, just not enough time. Thanks for watching!

    Dang Jamal, that was a serious hike man. Men outta boys kinda hike..lol..glad your cache was there. You know those hoodoo's, my last video I was filming what I thought of as a Spire but now I'm thinking it's maybe a hoodoo? Check it out and tell me what you think. Anyway, love this entire hike because it's so remote and I have never seen any of this area. Hopefully the State will do what's needed to protect this area, think it can do a better job anyway. Peace, Wheelchair John in Idaho 😎

    I glad to watch this part, and not do it myself. Almost all the rest of your trip I could see myself enjoying, but this part does not look very fun.

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah -- it's definitely a "connector" segment and though it's fun and unique in its own way, it's not really a destination itself for many hikers.
