  • Tucked away in a remote canyon just outside of Big Water, Utah on the edge of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument lies the Wahweap Hoodoos -- one of the world's most dramatic and unusual geological formations. These white columnar hoodoos are estimated to be 160 million years old (!) and are accessible only by foot. In this video, I take the two-hour journey to the Wahweap Hoodoos well before dawn to (hopefully) create some landscape photos before daybreak.
(Note: For some stupid reason about halfway through I start referring to the hoodoos as 'WahHEAP". Ugh. Must have been tired.)

This is the one I planned to go in 2019. But this July I will try it again. Thank you so much for sharing your trip! Hoping to see more from you!

Your photo of the illuminate hoodoos in front of a darker background is awesome. I love Utah for the wilderness, solitude and unique scenery. I bring a camera but honestly the value of Utah is just being there, whether you bring a camera or not. These days I go in a Jeep so I can go far away from other people to places where not many people go. My photos are strictly to chronicle my travels.

Thank you. The morning golden "hour" image is incredible! To know when to leave thetrailhead, I need to know the sunrise time.
Which month did you hike Wahweap Hoodoos trail?
How long did it take to hike the 4.5 miles to White Ghost?

Beautiful photos, Todd. Worth your early morning hike, although different than you expected. Thanks for sharing, Sylvia

8:25 oh my god that light!! incredible image. Well done sir. I love Utah, it always delivers.. Utah is arguably one of the most photographed places on earth so I really liked your choices of locations. you did your own thing, tested more unknown spots and took us to new places on your Utah trip and I really appreciate that, I mean there’s only so many times you can see corona arch. If you ever get out to Utah again and want to get out of red rock country Or the badlands then I would suggest the north east of the state in the Unitas mountains. It’s all high alpine mountain country with incredible rock formations with “Red Castle” being my favorite.. I think you would like it, but I am new to your channel so I don’t know if you enjoy mountain shooting.

I went to your website to see what you had there and read your write up on the “black spire”. I laughed when you told about the BLM office saying they didn’t know anything! LOL. We ran into the same thing at that same BLM office when we stopped in there to ask them about rockhounding for petrified wood. Now it’s not like we’re going to take out a car load of petrified wood; we just like looking for it and enjoy looking at it. We must have talked to the same guy; they act clueless; they know nothing!! We ran into the same thing at the BLM office in Price, UT. Anyway, we got tons of information from the woman who owns the local rock shop in Hanksville. Is there anyway you would share where the “Blown Away in Utah” area is located? We will be in the Page/Kanab area at the beginning of March. Not sure if it’s in the Glen Canyon Area or if it was also in the Hanksville Area. Thank you!
