I love how calm they made achillies. This isn't the sulky and angry warrior of the illiad, feels like a hero who's been there, done that, and is full of wisdom and sadness.
Makes sense considering how long he's probably been dead by this point. Gives one time to think, I'd imagine.
He sulk most of the illiad. And go berserk just because Patroclus is killed.
Years in the underworld definitely calm him down and give himself alot of times to think.
In illiad he was a hot head teenager and equally hot headed adult in war. Also fame and heroism got the best of him.
Now it has been a couple centuries since his passing. He probably had lot to think about
This Achilles feels a bit like the Odyssey version, whose advise to Odysseus boils down to "don't die yet".

Welcome to couple counselling the game
Accurate
@Zack Smith they are in the game
@Zack Smith yeah they were, in both the game and the original story. Men being in relationships with other men was widely accepted in Ancient Greece. Even Apollo and Zeus the ladies men of Olympus had male lovers.
@Zack Smith yes two people so deeply inlove who mixed their ashes so that they could be together for eternity, definitely not Into each other
@Zack Smith Yeah they were “roommates”
I'm studying archaeology and there's this one boy in my class who said Achilles and Patroclus were related (probably because he has seen "Troy") and I just sat there thinking "Oh sweet summer child..."
Technically, they were. They are first removed cousins in some versions, however, being lovers with your cousin back in Ancient Greece was perfectly normal.
@@cleeee-rl4yn but then again, we have no concrete evidence of both of their lineages, seeing as the story is set in mychanean greece and had many spoken versions running concurrently before being written down.
It’s possible that in many versions they were related in some way, and even back in greece this wouldn’t really pose a problem or be considered taboo, but I think OP was mainly talking about someone being unaware (or disapproving) of the largely acknowledged intimacy of Patroclus and Achilles, and speaking of them like they were related by blood in any way would be an easy way to handwave any textual evidence or argument to the contrary.
It would also assert the speakers opinion of their relationship since it would be largely taboo (and possibly illegal) by today’s standards. Thanks, Troy 🥶🙄🥲
@@cleeee-rl4yn yet in the Iliad, they came from different places and As the game illustrates, different skin tones and game from basically opposite kingdoms, they had really no way of being related. As someone who has read the Iliad before and some adaptations, people changes the Iliad and it’s context because they had homophobic views, but many historians can confirm that Achilles and Patroclus were very close in friendship and as lovers because in Ancient Greece, no one really cared who you laid in bed with since the word homosexual did not exist back then and no one really cared much on who was with who.
But as many people say, it would not be uncommon for ancients to mingle with their cousins or siblings, but in the context of the Iliad, that does not seem to be the case.
Even in the Odyssey, Patroclus is seen standing next to Achilles when Odysseus went to visit the Underworld. So rather you interpret their relationship as love or friendship, the meaning of this story written by Homer was so show how cruel war can be and how love is a dangerous thing and grief can make someone do terrible things. That’s basically the whole lesson of the book as Homer writes it, then being cousins ruins the meaning of the book. Cousins can love each other in a family way, but the meaning of the book is to show how loving someone romantically can be a borderline between stability and insanity when it comes to war.
I think why people portrayed them as cousins besides just homophobia was when in the final act of The Iliad, Patroclus wears Achilles armor to fight for him in battle so he would not have to break his promise and died in battle when the god Apollo intervened and threw off Patroclus’s helmet revealing his true identity and that’s when Hector stabbed him in the stomach and killed him. Reason being because how did people not know it wasint Achilles? Homer didint really think it through but again, that’s not the point of the book, it’s about the lesson being taught and the philosophy behind it.
Edit: I don’t mean to like bash on you, you are totally right on the incest part, Ancient people were…. S t r a n g e
Damned Troy, turning Achilles into a pretty brute and Pat into his Dragonheart cousin
Troy was a good movie but so many people think they were really cousins because of it!
When Patroclus stood up, he's the mirror opposite of Achilles.
Their designs are almost similar too, also Patroclus' wearing the "bracer of the myrmidons," whilst Achilles does not since he gave it to Zagreus.
Gee, these two seem like really close good friends!
I tought that at first too.
@@baohweeb6935 Some old interpretations make them relatives to justify Pat's and Les' close relationship. That's how much homosexuality is between them. People literally had no other explanation for them being so affectionate and caring towards each other.

❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 😤🤗
I love how everything in this game is about reuniting people: achilles and patrocles, orpheus and eurydice, nyx and chaos, hades and persephone.
I like that they actually portrayed Patroclus as the manlier looking one of the pair. Because that's what he was. Achilles was younger and prettier. Patroclus was more rugged.
A lot of people forget that Achilles was described as beautiful and with some feminine qualities, focusing entirely on the "great warrior". Like dudes, you can kick butt AND be a spicy little bombshell 🙄
@@kaylawoodbury2308 Indeed. I mean for Zeus' sake, he passed as a pretty little princess for most of his young life until Odysseus outed him. Odysseus had to use one of his tricks to figure him out from the crowd of girls because he couldn't do it through sight alone.
Achilles was _that_ pretty. (Also, I think Patroclus hung around him at the time as a kind of bodyguard/companion? Either assigned by one of his parents? But I'm not sure if that's accurate now. All I can remember is that Pats was something of an older brother-figure for Achilles before he became his charioteer/tentmate.)
@@kaylawoodbury2308 Yes! It drives me insane when fan art portrays Patroclus as being small, slender, & gentle, and then Achilles as a big, tall, ultra-buff manly-man. Achilles is described as looking feminine and smaller than his counterparts on multiple accounts, and he even passed as a servant girl in a castle for months when his goddess mother tried to hide him from being seeked out for the war too soon. He's only 16 when he goes to war, and obviously he gained muscle as time and training went on, but he's always described as being beautiful.
@@Borderose Yes! It is often unknown by readers that Achilles was in hiding as a servant girl/princess companion for months because his mother Thetis was trying to protect him from going to the war too soon (i believe?). You're right! He wouldn't have passed if he wasn't small and pretty.
Also, I've always pictured Achilles and Patroclus as being the same age. They met after Patroclus was exiled to Achilles' father's castle for accidentally killing another boy. Achilles picked him out from the other boys living there to be his companion for training for war. Achilles was brought to Scyros to be hidden as a servant girl (he actually was forced to mate with the princess Deidamea while there) some years later. It says in the book "The Song of Achilles ", that Patroclus went after him and found him on Scyros and was allowed to live in the castle, as long as he kept his mouth shut about Achilles not actually being a girl - but i don't know if that's accurate to actual mythology or if the author of TSOA just put that in there for her own interpretation.
@@mary-simone5347 I love it, but I believe that's artistic license on the part of the TSoA author. ^^ Patroclus was older, not by much, but definitely older than Achilles. When they entered the war he was probably the right age to be in it, while Achilles, canonically the youngest hero at the start of the war, couldn't be older than 15 or 16. Patroclus in art depicting him from less modern sources is seen as bearded and more rugged than the beardless, handsome Achilles tending his wounds. I like to think that while his higher social status and his martial prowess gave Achilles a position above his charioteer, in private Achilles was "the beloved" rather than "the lover" in the pairing. The one protected and cherished by the senior partner.
Achilles' manliness has been a debate since Ancient Greece. Apparently, too many people found it odd that the wrathful storm of steel and despair in golden armor was "the beloved" in a male-male heroes relationship and that the role should belong to Patroclus, the lesser warrior. But, as I did, a lot of people, too, pointed out that imagining Achilles that way violates more social conventions. He was also known to be younger, beardless, and beautiful. Patroclus, who looks like everyone's idea of a manly man, would be put into an embarassibg situation if that was the case. Instead, the relationship raised no eyebrows. Achilles' infamous rage and temper was just as much a sign of his immaturity as much as it is a roar of his warrior spirit. They were also not "gay" as modern people imagine them--theirs was a relationship very special for their setting and context. It ws seen as manly and proper. Achilles and Patroclus had female lovers and companions--Achilles fathered Neoptolemus on one of his old gal pals back in hiding. But they saw no conflict with that and also holding each other preciously--as both bedmate and brother-in-arms. And no one around then thought them less manly or heroic for any of it until people, centuries after their tale was written, debated because they found it weird the stronger warrior was probably "the bottom". Lol

As someone that loves to over analyze stuff they way that they refer to one another is so sweet. One line that had me gushing is when Achilles was describing "where my heart once was". Hes describing Patroclus as his HEART.
And the subtle times when they refer to each other as "my Achilles and my Patroclus". It shows that even though they haven't seen each other in gods know how long they still belong to one another. Most media make the love of two people annoyingly blunt and blank. They make it boringly obvious even from the beginning and it doesn't give you any flavor nor excitement. They don't go into the subtleties that real people actually show when they care for someone. Their love feels so real and so genuine. AND IT ALL HAPPENED IN 23MIN. I am crying
I wish they told the whole story for the people who don't know... so if you're curious, I'm going to sum up their story really REALLY shortly
At the 9th year of the Trojan war, Achilles refuses to fight because he is a proud man and Agaememnon doesn't recognize him as the powerful warrior he is. So he just protests the war, but he is the strongest warrior in the whole war so Trojans gets ahead of them by the time Achilles isn't fighting.
Patroclus, on the other hand, just wants everything to be done and go back, so he just wears Achilles' armour and clothes, acts like him, fights like him to cheer and encourage their soldiers. Everyone thinks he is Achilles and naturally attacks him. He fights bravely, but greatest Troja warrior, Hektor kills him.
You might ask, why isn't Hektor dead yet, concidering Achilles is stronger than him and probably would have killed him in the battle way earlier. That's because of the prophecy Achilles' mother told him of. She says, 'you will die if you kill Hektor (or Hektor dies in any way, I really can't remember)' so Achilles always stays away from Hektor.
They bring Patroclus' body back to Achilles, who expects him to come back safely, but instead he just finds his lover's corpse, lying on the hands of strangers, covered in blood. So he naturally goes mad on the point, ever so proud man with a lot of dignity cries and screams in front of everybody, he literally pulls his hair off. He cries for days, calls him "the other part of my soul" and doesn't eat, drink for days.
Later, he goes back to war and fights a literal god, then kills Hektor. He displays Hektor's head on his lance for everyone to see.
Then he loses his will to live after revenging his lover and after telling his last request which is to be buried with the ashes of Patroclus, he dies in the war. He dies to the biggest coward in the whole war.
So this is their story from the original Illiad, not from tsoa or somewhere else, this is the real thing. Hopefully it's good enpough:)
So…did he allowed that arrow to pierce his heel? On purpose?
@@andreabanuelosavila2317 the arrow doesnt actually go to his heel, if i remember correctly Iliad doesnt even mention Achilles' death, so its hard to say. Some people say he took the arrow to his heel, some people say to heart, it really depends on the source i believe so to say he was waiting for his death would also be a different source and not iliad itself, therefore it might be wrong. It's just that Achilles tells everyone to bury his ashes with Patroclus, who lies in the Trojan's area instead of their own, so it's quite obvious Achilles knew he was gonna die before the war was over.
