  • After laying eyes upon girls his own age for the first time, Frederic (Rex Smith) realises that Ruth (Angela Lansbury) is not as young and beautiful as he thought.
What is The Pirates of Penzance (1983) about?
Frederic (Rex Smith), who has spent his formative years as a junior pirate, plans to mark his 21st birthday by breaking free from the Pirate King (Kevin Kline) and beginning his courtship of Mabel (Linda Ronstadt). But because he was born on Feb. 29, a date that only arrives every fourth year, Frederic isn't technically 21 -- and the Pirate King is still his master. Unless something gives, Frederic will soon be on a collision course with the Pirate King's new nemesis: Mabel's father.

This movie was playing non-stop on a pre-cursor to cable back in 1983. It was unavoidable when visiting my uncle in Baton Rouge. I think I appreciate it more now than then! ⚓ And, gracious, wasn't Rex Smith a beauty?

If they wanted an old woman who couldn’t sing, Lucille Ball was available. ANGELA LANSBURY WAS SUPERB. MAME forever.

As much as I love Angela Lansbury I find her hard to understand when she sings.

Ok I have watched this movie probably hundreds of times no joke since I was 2 years old. It has always been my favorite musical and I absolutely love it.
However, one thing I have just recently thought about after all the times I have watched it: in the Pirates of Penzance, Ruth is wanted Frederic to fall in love with her at the beginning right? That’s why she goes ashore with him and why she’s upset when he sees all the young girls and realizes she’s much older than him. BUT why would she want to be with him romantically in the first place? She has been his nursery maid since he was a baby or at least since he was a child. So it’s like she was his parental figure especially once he was accidentally sent to join the pirates and she had to go with him. It’s weird that she would even want that kind of relationship with him in the first place right?!

      A) Victorians were into some weird stuff like old people trying to force young people into marriage B) Gilbert and Sullivan made fun of this weird stuff that they were into. They made fun of young people being forced into marrying old people too in the Mikado - Koko is engaged to his ward, Yum yum, basically an old man engaged to his adopted daughter! But then realizes it would be wrong to stand in the way of young love between Yum Yum and Nanki-Poo so gets them together and ends up with old Katisha, who was trying to force young Nanki-Poo to marry her.
So, yes it is weird Ruth is basically trying to trick young Frederick into thinking that all women look like 50 year old women but GS were making fun of lecherous oldsters chasing after the young...at least I assume that was their intent since it is a theme that repeats in their plays.

Ruth was NOT an idiot. She was in the know THE WHOLE TIME who the Pirates of Penzance REALLY were... Being a nursery maid of low society, she hoped to come into a lot of money by marrying Frederick after effectively having made him a member of the English nobility (who'd gone wrong). Only she wasn't counting on the Major-Generals "wards in chancery" appearing at this point, which thwarted her plot. In a way, Ruth was the mastermind and catalyst behind this whole story. Notice how at the end of the operetta, she plays her ace before the Major-General (and the police) when she pops the big reveal.
