Codex entry: Scientist Salarian, a parody of the Modern Major General song (humans Gilbert and Sullivan, 1879) was written in 2171 by famed Salarian lyricist and part time structural biologist Jokus Kirosa. The song was later featured as part of the 2183 inaugural gala celebrating humanity’s contributions to the galactic artistic community, where it was performed for the council alongside other classics like Francis Kitt’s All-Elcor Hamlet and Leonin Trebin’s musical comedy rendition of “Jaynestown”.
So thrilled to finally bring the full version of this Mass Effect legendary dialogue easter egg to life! When I first played Mass Effect 2 and discovered the dialogue option of Mordin Solus talking about his time singing this Gilbert and Sullivan "Pirates of Penzance" classic I immediately took to the internet to see if there was a full version of the lyrics in existence. After a little googling I discovered an entry on fanfiction.com by the incredible writer by the user name AssaultSloth of a fantastic expansion of a full set of lyrics and KNEW I had to give musical life to his genius writing! So for all you fans who intersect the Mass Effect universe and the operettas of the great Gilbert and Sullivan like myself, this one is for you!! Hope you enjoy! Can we talk about how Will straight-up embodies Mordin for this entire video? Not just with the voice, but his speech, inflection, and mannerisms. In my school days I played in the pit orchestra for the school's production of Pirates of Penzance. Years later, while playing the Mass Effect games for the first time I found this reference to Gilbert and Sullivan in the game. I was so surprised I almost dropped my controller.

It's incredible how deep the lore in this song goes. "I cut up more batarians than Torfan's famous butchering" refers to the battle of Torfan where the System Alliance anihilated the whole population of the pirate moon Torfan as retaliation of the Skylian Blitz.
That's one of the backstories of creating shepard in ME1... and i have absolutly forgotten about this until hearing this line.
I know right? the lyricist really went deep on this one
"I problem solve with tools and guns and even farm machinery" is an even deeper cut. "Problem solve" means kill here. Mordin makes a reference to killing someone with farming equipment in his loyalty mission, and in the Shadow Broker DLC we find out the details of that encounter and that it's where he got his facial scars.

Edit: I'm currently in the middle of the second one and I'm having a blast. I've recently done Mordin's loyalty mission and it was really interesting how they deal with the ethics of what he did.
Edit 2: I've just now finished Mass Effect 3 and I liked almost all of it, even though the ending felt a little bit weird. This game series might be one of the best.
ME3's ending is highly controversial. Basically nobody likes the star child and the original endings apparently only differed in respect to the colour of the beam. After vocal protest from fans, the devs released an update that expanded the endings to make the consequences of the choices clearer. It's still not great (I'm sure the devs could have come up with a better ending if EA had given them the time), but personally I refuse to let the last 5-10 minutes ruin my experience of this amazing game trilogy!

I'm replaying Mass Effect 2 and mentioned this to my friend. Tonight, as I was working on the very mission to retrieve Mordin, I get a text from him linking this video. That's video game magic right there.

Truly one of the most fun and memorable "easter eggs" found in any game, I was delighted when Mordin began singing, and I've gone back over it a number of times just to make sure I got all of the lyrics. THANK YOU so much for putting the lyrics on-screen for the performance!

The thing that delights me most about this functional easter egg from the game is that, per canon, *nobody in Mass Effect learns other languages normally*.
It’s all translators that work really well, albeit imperfectly on rare occasion.
Which means one of two things:
1. Somehow Gilbert and Sullivan translate *perfectly*, down to the syllables, into a language developed by a completely separate evolutionary tree.
2. Mordin went out of his way as an already short-lived species to learn English so well that he can sing a G&S homage/parody perfectly off-the-cuff like this.
I've never even played any of the Mass Effect games, and I think I've listened to this three dozen times. Well done!
