  • NBC's Shaquille Brewster joins Shep Smith to report on the search for the parents of Ethan Crumbley, the high school sophomore who is accused of killing four classmates in Oxford, Michigan. The parents are being charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter. With CNBC's David Henderson. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO: cnb.cx/2NGeIvi
Authorities are searching for the parents of a teenager accused of killing four people in a Michigan high school shooting this week, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Friday.
The news came shortly after Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald announced that James and Jennifer Crumbley had been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter.
“While the shooter was the one who entered the high school and pulled the trigger, there are other individuals who contributed to the events on Nov. 30, and it’s my intent to hold them accountable as well,” McDonald said at a news conference.
She added, “Gun ownership is a right, and with that right comes great responsibility.”
An attorney for the parents had contacted authorities Friday morning to say that James and Jennifer Crumbley would turn themselves in if they were charged, sheriff Michael Bouchard said.
On Friday afternoon after officials said they were searching for the pair, their lawyers said the couple had not fled but had left town the night after the shooting “for their own safety” and were in the process of returning for arraignment.
“They are not fleeing from law enforcement despite recent comments in media reports,” lawyers Shannon Smith and Mariell Lehman said in a statement.
The attorneys’ statement regarding the Crumbleys’ return was first reported by the Detroit News.
The sheriff’s office said it had not heard from lawyers late Friday afternoon and said that the duo’s voluntary return was not assured.
Earlier in the day Bouchard described resources on the case.
“We have our Fugitive Apprehension Team, the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service and others actively looking for them and have every expectation we’ll have them in custody soon,” Bouchard said. “The action of fleeing and ignoring their attorney certainly adds weight to the charges. They cannot run from their part in this tragedy.”
The couple may be driving a black 2021 Kia Seltos SUV with a Michigan license plate number, authorities said.
Bouchard said that his department was not given a heads-up from the prosecutor that the charges would be filed against the parents.
“We were informed, actually, by the media that a charging decision had been made,” he told MSNBC.
When asked if that was frustrating, the sheriff responded: “That’s an understatement.”
James Crumbley purchased the weapon days before the shooting, according to the sheriff. McDonald said that James Crumbley brought the suspect, Ethan Crumbley, with him to the store.
Under Michigan law, an involuntary manslaughter charge can be pursued if prosecutors believe someone contributed to a situation in which harm or death was high. If convicted, they could face up to 15 years in prison.
Ethan Crumbley, 15, has been charged as an adult with two dozen crimes, including murder, attempted murder and terrorism, in the shooting Tuesday at Oxford High School in Oakland County, roughly 30 miles north of Detroit.
During Friday’s news conference, the top prosecutor in Oakland County said that a teacher had observed Ethan Crumbley searching ammunition on his cellphone and alerted school officials. The school tried to contact his mother but could not reach her.
McDonald told reporters that Jennifer Crumbley did not contact the school but instead texted her son: “Lol. I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught.”

If above said adults agreed to keep him at school, resource officer should've been notified and had his backpack checked. What more did this kid have to prove whatever turmoil he held was tormenting him. Did he nee to write the 'Help me' in his own blood? Then have it delivered to both the school and his parents via pigeon carrier to be taken seriously? That would be kinda official, right? Hey Ross, I'm with you when it comes to confronting religious dingbats and do it all the time.
While I strongly support the Constitution and it's 1st amendment right to freedom of religion, I also believe it's important to provide counterpoint to such superstitious nonsense.
Especially with the understanding that religious belief is relative to belief in ridiculous conspiracy "theories" without evidence, based on "faith", and the effects those beliefs have had on our nation.
However, this may not be the topic for engaging in religious debate.
Personally, I and it seems you, don't need an imaginary friend for emotional support, but clearly there are some who do and still others who have been intellectually subjugated to figments of imagination as the victims of the psychological child abuse of childhood religious indoctrination.
This recent tragedy deserves our thoughts and compassion for the grieving loved ones of these 4 young people.
Also, giving thought to how we can work toward stopping such tragedies from happening.
I'm a supporter of the 2nd amendment, but within reason and support stiffer background checks and think they should include evaluation of mental health records by the issuing agency, as well as properly funding our nations mental health system, which has been gutted so that corporations and the wealthy can receive tax breaks.
This new law of holding the parents responsible is excellent and will hopefully catch on nationally and help deter future shooters by extending the personal consequences beyond the individual, as well as motivation to be more responsible parents.
I'm not sure if it would have worked in this case, as the parents seem to be total POS human beings.
Life is precious, short and fleeting.
      Don't take it for granted.

They could not harm a anyone easily. I mean easily by they won’t have to go get bullets as the cops would hopefully have them in custody. What can a teacher do when she reports a student's misconduct, and Admin either doesn't pull the student or sends the child right back into the class? Teachers need to have more autonomy than they have because they certainly get blamed for what some of their students do. The teacher didn't fail in this situation but may become a scapegoat as I've already seen in at least one comment saying the teacher should have taken the drawing. The teacher REPORTED it! Taking the drawing wouldn't have stopped this tragedy. Reporting it as the teacher did should have stopped it. However, those in power sided with the parents and sent the student back to class. Lay the blame where it should be - it's not the teacher's fault.

Teachers and school officials have a law enforced ‘duty to warn’, I’m stunned that they let him back in a classroom…I’m also stunned that his parents could be so unbelievably pathetic to not only not take him home, not secure the firearm, text him ‘just make sure you don’t get caught’, and now they are on the run, and their very disturbed 15yo is facing life in prison…hmm…wonder why this kid turned out why he did? I hope they throw the book at those parents, and I disagree that its a difficult case to make, at least against the mother (although both parents are both responsible for securing a deadly firearm) but her texts…she’s hung her self by her own petard, as my Dad would say. The school has some serious questions to answer as to why they did not send him home, they could have said, we’re suspending him for a week until we know he’s in counseling, or called 911 to have him taken for a psych eval at a hospital if the parent’s refused to take him, which they did…now they’re on the run…where they live, its about 45 min to Canada, or a real long drive to Mexico…if they have passports, Canada hadn’t heard about it yet…they could be sipping Margaritas in Central America or somewhere that doesn’t extradite. I would not be in the least bit surprised…and they’ll let their son rot (I’m not disputing he should pay for his crimes, but also have a thorough psychological evaluation also) and disregard all of the suffering parents, family and friends, and every student at that school. Disgusting.

would have been in the office
    talking with Police and Parents
Police would have asked him if he
had a weapon " Police would have
    searched his desk locker the
bathroom and any other area he
    may have been in .
    Student would have been arrested
If they found any weapons Police
    would have questioned Parents as

Teacher’s not at fault, but whatever school administrator see him back to class after that note should resign. He should have been sent home with parents. And not allowed back to school until AFTER a Mental Health Assessment.. by a mental health professional, concluded he wasn’t a present risk to himself or others. That’s what we do where I live. Every ‘threat’ is assumed active.

The problem with school officials and parents was that spoiled kids find ways to get their parents to sue schools or individuals. Because they made them feel sad or took their things away when some kids DO NEED DISCIPLINE so schools I believe fear getting sued or cited. Very sad this is how it is now and forcing to take your kid home could cause trouble so they let him stay.

We've all seen how threatening and radicalized a certain group of parents have become. The school may have been trying to avoid such confrontations. But no doubt, the shooter should have never been allowed to returned to class.

@@EtherealAriel yes that’s why I say kids are spoiled by some parents and then schools cannot enforce rules on them like taking phones up because kids use them inappropriately. Like in Some schools or centers teachers can’t take students things away anymore since parents give phone to kids for safety purposes.
