  • Ben Kawaller went to Chicago to cover the convention of the Democratic Socialists of America. Ben hoped to spar with smart, good-natured socialists on the questions of freedom, democracy, and capitalism. But that’s not how things went.
Instead, a video about what happened when Ben tried to ask about life under utopia and the capitalists who took him in when the socialists kicked him out.

      Stores exist in starve trek!!!
Many people get Star Trek wrong. Imagine for a moment the course this world is on with self driving cars etc. In a world where most work to keep society running would be done by machines, it’s clear that universal housing & basic food would be provided, (basic housing is a Japanese sleeping pod with shared bathroom). But work hasn’t disappeared completely.
A Star Trek utopia clearly outlines that the individual must bend themselves to society, (none of this you’re triggering me nonsense) and each person is constantly “on a quest to better themselves and the rest of humanity.” Laziness is abhorred. Excuses are ignored. It’s also clear - that idea of that future depicts the world post automation, where those basic needs are met but for anything ‘more’ than just basic you need to participate in society and put in the effort. Living in that world is rigorous and filled with a balance of individual purpose, needs and desires, as well as social responsibility.
Folks that are against capitalism are just as lost as those against socialism. And both have no idea where each is already a functioning part of American society, (libraries, how much they already support & already willingly participate in each.

Amusing video and those women seemed pleasant. I think it's an implication of the human reward system. Working for a personal reward is motivating. If your increase in productivity is diffused, then you don't have a motivation to do better (if you can't differentiate between a poor worker and an excellent one). The solution that socialist tends to use is indoctrinating people in the hope that you can engineer a citizenry that work for altruistic purposes. But to achieve that, you have to get super authoritarian from the get-go. And you can kinda approximate socialism in a capitalist society. Socialism doesn't seem opt out.

The segregation part is pretty counterproductive. All other women's expos are just called women's expos.

    • @Nekochukinch
      @Nekochukinch Před 4 měsíci

This is incorrect but I respect the attempt at a well thought out response. Socialists do not attempt to get people into the project through altruistic purposes, it's very specifically not for altruistic purposes. This is a very skin deep way of looking at this. In fact we have a term capped material condition or material analysis to describe the way in which we relate our lives to the materials or capital we have that ends up being a much more effective way of letting people relate their own power to the power their bosses or rulers have over them. I think you are close when you mention the human reward system. Under capitalism workers do not own their own labor, just who they sell their time to. The only insensitive is hourly wage and any benefits of employment which itself could be a great thing or bad thing(google company towns or company script). Such a reward system only really exists under systems where someone needs to be rewarded in order to keep the system going. If we had no rulers, no power over one another, what would be the reward or push to keep going? To not die. Under socialism or similar projects the insensitive is to keep going, to work for the benefit of everyone. The idea of individual reward is inherently selfish, something humans are not born to be. I hear rebuttals to this that "no humans are inherently selfish.." so wrong! Parents sacrifice for their children, people help others for no reason other than kindness. Only in the context of an opposing view do people pretend this is truth

But holy hell, it’ll be hard when average americans are raised by individualism in an ancient-cult-like-tradition “new world, land of the free”.
To be fair, they got a good fundamental idea though, while I understand it’s extremely hard to find what’s in line of right/wrong throughout history.
For now, I’ll go along with Hegel and the Marx’s “question of when”; so call me ignorant or whatever, but I won’t force it till “when” is obvious… and no this is not obvious enough, you got so many things to do in this postmodern US republic and bureaucracy (respectively with “right and left-wing” institutions). I know, it won’t be easy and that’s what ironically gave anything value - especially in a “liberty” hellhole - since that thing will be hard to obtain, whether it’s money or just welfare. Hopefully, you - as the lucky minority - can gather enough knowledges, motivation, started working on yourself, your family and friends. If anything, remember that it’s not just you, you should contribute to the society overall. After all, Idealism is realer than Realism, the fate before the world and God is not so far off.

Tell that to the people at the convention.
How many of them know that free market can exist within capitalism, or communism like China?
That almost every single economy is a mixed economy of some kind?
Or know the difference between social programs and socialism?
I'm sure that he cut the most humorous and ignorant clips ... but most of those seem pretty much in context because honestly, anyone supporting socialism now because they think a Star Trek magic replicator based utopia is possible I don't think needs much more context lo.
I hope this is just a small small minority of people ... but I've seen enough clips to think this is a more common view than it should be.
I very much strongly believe in free market economies.
Sounds like you support socialism to some extent, but also free market?
If you just support mixed economy, leaning more socialist then I understand how that works, we have plenty of real world examples.
If not, would love some help finding good links to vids/articles that explain how people that want full socialism actually envision that working though.

@@tercerocastero I suspect that some of the people in this video have well-thought out politics and some of them don't. My complaint is not that these people must be smart, it's that whatever their views are, they were not given a fair hearing.
I can't speak for them, but as for myself, yes, I do know that there is a difference between social programs and socialism, etc. I don't think it's really that rare to know those things.
The Star Trek quote is a good example of something which might be dumb or might be fine, depending on how the rest of the conversation went. If he followed up by saying that he didn't mean an economy that runs on magic but rather an economy which allows all people to have the necessities of life, I think that would be fair. And there's no reason to believe it's not possible to ensure that people have food, shelter, healthcare, etc. These things don't even require abandoning capitalism, funnily enough. You could have a social democracy similar to what Bernie Sanders was proposing. Capitalism with a functioning government that worked for the people.
My own political views do not fall neatly into a label like socialism or communism, which is actually somewhat frustrating. But I'll try to describe the problems and a possible solution.
It seems obvious to me that most of politics is illusory, in the United States, at least. Both parties represent the rich, and frequently, simply are the rich. The Bush is an oil family. Cheney owned part of Blackwater/Xe/whatever it's been renamed to this week. Romney was a venture capitalist, part of those companies that made money by going in and firing as many workers as possible. It's not just Republicans, of course. The Pelosis are doing insider trading, for sure. Hunter Biden probably is selling access to his dad/the President. Most family members of Presidents and Senators are likely running the same grift. It's baffling that Americans have this love for the 'business man', when most of these guys don't have any special skills or knowledge. Arguably, some of them, like Trump, are not even business men, they have only succeeded in branding themselves as such. The media is also owned by the rich, which is why when Bernie Sanders was running on creating a functioning government, all these 'journalists' started attacking him. The Washington Post ran 16 different attack articles on him in a single day.
The two institutions of our society which should be balancing out the influence of the ruling class are failing to do so. The government should be taxing the ruling class so that the working class can get by. The media should be pointing this out. Both the government and the media have been invaded and controlled by the ruling class to the point we no longer can depend on them to function. This little youtube video we are leaving comments on is a tiny drop of water in an ocean of propaganda against any view that doesn't suit the ruling class. The media is simply not allowed to take any view that might benefit the working class seriously. It's not open for discussion.
As to the solution, it's democracy. Democracy is flawed but it's also the best thing humanity has come up with. We need to start using democracy with economics in a similar way to politics. Vote in the workplace, either directly on decisions or for representatives. There should be voting on salaries and wages. I've worked in places where the people above me knew what they were doing and I would gladly vote that they be paid more. I've also worked in places where the boss came in, looked around, and then went golfing. I'd gladly vote to replace that guy, and to not have him be paid three hundred times more than the people who actually did the work.
I don't want to write a whole book here, but to name a few positive effects of economic democracy: the workers wouldn't vote to send their jobs to other countries. The workers wouldn't vote to dump waste in their own communities. There would be more long term thinking and strategizing. A lot of the dysfunction in the government would be solved as a secondary effect. The main reason the government is so useless is because of its capture by the exact same people who rule over us in the workplace. Jeff Bezos 'makes' something like a thousand dollars a second while he is asleep in bed. That same wealth is what allows him to buy and control The Washington Post. That wealth is something the workers would never have voted for. Bezos would never have this level of influence without a ridiculous economic system which is set up to benefit those who do not work, over those who do.
Somehow there is a meme that capitalism and democracy go hand in hand. This is false. One look at how our society is functioning disproves this whole idea. What goes together is democracy and more democracy, in government and in the economy. That is my two cents.
How we get to this point, I can't say for sure. I don't think it would take a revolution. It could be done by changing laws and/or by prolonged worker strikes. Probably there would be social unrest and lots of unhappy people, for a while. I don't think there will be guillotines. I do think it's possible, though. All it would take is enough people who decide that it's worth having control over their lives. We got rid of kings in government, and the next step is getting rid of kings in the economy.
Going from this to 'full communism' is another matter that I don't think is worth considering until we at least reach this point...

No idea how capitalism, socialsim, or communism works. They just want to be heard and feel validated.
    Pathetic.
