The fact that Amanda legitimately cares enough to not back fully is awesomeness! She does go a bit too far this time but it was just far enough to really see the power of both of them.
I'm guessing Amanda was wanting to push Fran to see how well Fran could protect herself after what happened to her parents. After all, after Fran's parents died, Amanda regretted not being there for them & helping to train them after they wanted to become adventures.
I love the subtlety of Amanda's expertise and experience being showcased here... She controls the fight right from the start in order to get just a basic advantage of lighting; she maneuvers Fran to have to look into the bonfire, messing up her night vision while leaving her fully illuminated for Amanda to easily follow.
You see it really well starting at 0:59 in the video: Amanda starts to attack on Fran's right, forcing her to circle left to avoid being hit but putting the fire behind Amanda.
Amanda then resets their positioning with the handle-smack at 1:11 before getting serious and starting "round two" of their duel. As this is a test of Fran's ability, a positional reset makes sense to test Frans tactical awareness.
Then at 1:31 Amanda attacks Fran on the right again, with Fran circling to the left again and once again being unable to gain control of the battlefield.
There's not many fights in anime that showcase the difference between talent and experience quite like this.

exactly so heck the handle swat alone is a serious show of skill as she takes a weapon like the whip which is highly unusual and very difficult to control and would be considered a medium to long range weapon and shows that she can use every part of it as an EFFECTIVE weapon making her dangerous at all ranges including close which subtracts from Frans options in the fight as closing the distance on a whip wielder would normally be an effective tactic but now its not

For those wondering they do fight again in the future, and even with frans and teachers insane growth rate, they still loss to her. Both Fran and teacher were fighting with all of their heart by the way.

Honestly id count it as a win that time because they lost souly due to the arena rewinding in the final exchange because it thought fran died when they were inches and I mean inches away from winning I call BS (fight on an Omega stage next time you cowards)

I love Fran's attitude and respect towards Amanda. Even though at this time she was annoyed at Amanda and even with her Teacher as an OP sword, she knows she's going to get clapped.
What she wanted to know is how long she could last against her without relying on her sword. And she outlasted every single B and C rank team that tried to fight Amanda in a duel. Even managed to land a hit
and Amanda was holding back like you cant believe! When Fran enters the Adventurers Fighting Tournament in book 9 and gets all the way to the finals, Amanda goes all out to win and pushes Fran to her limits. Because she does not want Fran to stop Training and decided to become the Wall that Fran Must overcome! Her love for Fran and her Regrets about her mistakes with Fran's parents make her decide to personally train Fran in Book 13
Wasn't any B rankers. Only C's and below in that. That being said...she's probably not QUITE B rank at this point even though the two of them trashed a B-rank threat and hard.

@@frankearl9285 don't know where your at in the Novels, so I wont say much, but "Swordsorriss" Fran Defeated an A rank in the Adventurers Tourney. AND Amanda had to go all out to stand against Fran, Fran comes in 3rd place.
Best scene is when she carves up Blue Cat! Fran is way scarier than Amanda..
When you think about it, though, that kind of interrogation is very much effective, so long as you have enough Mana to heal severed limbs. With or without the severed parts handy.

@@Craftingwick ya, um, in the Light Novels, that's how she interrogates, bandits, thugs, spys, murderers, racists. even a corrupt noble! she is utterly merciless to bad guys. Slavers get it the worst! her trauma and hate for them are on another level! Its hard to say what pisses her off more. Dissing Teacher or defending slavery..................

To be honest, Amanda isn't that creepy stalker in the LN, but the anime's adapting the manga which damages Amanda's character pretty badly with fan service and unneeded poor comic. It's hard to see how Amanda is a legendary adventurer, whose name is known throughout the continent and beyond and considered one of the closest to reach S-rank with such a poor treatment... Poor Amanda, she deserves better than what the manga did to her...

The only reason Fran isn't A rank is because people think the guild master have a thing for little girl... Wish might be the case since it's the only reason she isn't A rank. I wouldn't trust that dude
There’s actually another reason why she’s not A
B and above adventurers are considered leaders and thus need the ability to coordinate lower ranked adventurers

@@justinbuergi9867 Yeah, she will be considered an "A" ranked adventurer in terms of fighting strength not long after... but it takes a lot more than that to achieve full "A" rank status.
For most adventurers this isn't a big deal, because they take decades to aquire "A" rank strength (most don't even reach that point), and during that time they learn how to lead as well. Fran is the odd one out here. She gets strong fast, but has to master leadership slowly but surely to be accepted as a full blown "A" rank adventurer.

Even in the WN right now sheʻs not A rank yet, but pretty much going to be announced. Fran thinks of A rank as someone at the same level as Amanda and is special and not something that should be given out to anyone. Honestly though Fran has done Enough by the latest WN chapters to be A rank imho.
I mean you're also forgetting how much of an upset it would be to go even from D to B in such a short amount of time. Doubly so WITHOUT the thorough testing that would be required, which Fran has NOT yet received.
i love this series, the very last bit this episode made me a bit teary, how Amanda acknowledges Frans strength :3
when you get to book 9 and realize Amanda was holding back like crazy! then you get to book 13 and Fran after.......... leveling up........ STILL struggles against her :)
She didn't really hold back that much, though ;). But she worked hard enough until book 9 to make quantifiable progress for the first time in years... to achieve a very close Pyrrhic victory, admitting herself that she won because of decades of experience that Fran obviously hasn't. Amanda is one of the two A-rank considered the closest to reach S-rank on the whole continent at the very least, the simple fact that Fran can stand her ground is already proof enough of how a fraud the black cat's guild rank really is :p.

@@dracussdarkweave112 As of Ulmutt Tournament, Fran's rank isn't a political question, but because she was an adventurer since less than 3 months. She already skyrocketed through the ranks quite a bit, it usually takes years to reach C-rank. Where the english translation currently is, Fran is an adventurer since a bit more than a year and already officially a nickname bearer, in other words an adventurer considered a top notch one by the Guild, saying she's hindered by the Guild's politics is quite the overstatement ;). It's essentially that her circumstances are way too alien for the Guild's internal functioning to keep up ( how is the Guild supposed to handle someone who can spar with S-Rank adventurers 5 months after their registration at 12 years old, exactly ? ).
@@gerardmanvussa501 actually the English translation is up to volume 14 as of may 21 :) I'm read up to volume 13, and shes an A rank now, after the events in the capital. And on that note about volume 9, I was crying tears of Joy for Fran!, "Her Greatest Wish"

There is more to that. She deserve to be called grandma because Fran parents grow up in her orphanage. She also have great guilt about their death.

What should Fran's actual rank be during this part in the story? I know they said she should be higher earlier on but I mean, to be able to last this long against an A rank she has to be at least high B, right?

Later (After several powerups from here) they have a big trouble with a very powerful C rank Monster (The Pillbug thing which was almost B in power).
@@donflamingo795 no, she is a true D rank at this point. After the Adventurers Trounement in book 9 she becomes a C rank. they wanted to move her straight to B because of all the accomplishments she had done by that point. But her lack of Worldly experience and not being trusted to deal with the Noble class without insulting the ones with easily bruised egos, led the guild to hold her at c rank until certain events happens and she becomes a B. as far as strength goes, she is most likely upper A tier as of Volume 13. And we have to wait till May to get book 14 and read what happens next.

A whip has a severe weakness, in that it can be easily grabbed once it's "idle", which makes it nearly useless as a weapon.
Sure, except when Empowered by Magic as you can see here. Not to mention it's no ordinary whip with the end that you can use for a piercing attack. As she said, most people would be knocked out in 1 Strike with her Magically Empowered Whip.
In reality a whip makes for a terrible weapon, but a good tool for torture of pulling off tricks.
When magic is added to the mix things can change.

If it was IRL the whip would still cause more pain than damage. The heavy metal would make it difficult to wield, and the metal spike on the end would only cause injuries at worst. If it was a jagged metal spike the chances of it ripping flesh improves but only marginally.
In fiction that all depends on the writer.
I would rather pick up a spear because they are stupid easy to pick up and effectively use, and they can be used as a walking stick.

very like to happen if teacher join, if they can go all out, teacher can support with long range spell and support magic meanwhile Fran will only focus on movement and sword tecnic, but there is a catch.... Teacher and Fran didnt tune fine with teamwork XD they don't have any combo move or non verbal agreement on combat, they both learning

@@redcrown5446 yes, in the final ep of season 1, Amanda talk to the store owner that long ago she had 2 neko children in her orphanage and in a flashback both of them say "see our daughter, we combine our name to name her"

@@redcrown5446 the two neko children left when they got older, had fran, but were killed by the slavers and fran was taken as a slave. Atleast thats what I’ve gathered from the manga. It’s honestly pure coincidence
