Not quite, but they were used in combination with halberds against pike formations and both were used by bodyguards. The greatsword is more agile than the halberd, but it still has inferior range and does less damage on armour and weapons.
Absolutely not true. Greatswords were first developed to be used against knights and other opponents in heavy armor. During the period in which combat revolved around heavy armor Greatswords were an uncommon weapon, but had a certain popularity to them. The thing is that a greatsword was incredibly expensive until advances in metallurgy made steel cheaper, and by that time warfare had moved away from knights to using armies equipped with pikes.
Greatswords did become more popular during the era when pikes ruled the battlefield. A few men would be equipped with heavy armor and given greatswords with the mission of breaking pikes and creating a hole in the pike line so lightly armored skirmishers could flood through the hole and destroy the pikemen. Being the guy in heavy armor that had to close and try to make a breach in the pike line was a high risk job, even riskier than being a skirmisher or pikeman.
Why would you use a greatsword against spears? Spears are powerful weapons but their weakness is usually going against shields and armour, since Spears are generally thrusting weapons (which can also be used as quarterstaffs), shields and strong armour was generally their weakness. If longer swords would have countered spears then they would have existed centuries before they became popular, it's more likely their purpose was to be a weapon that could both fight against pikes and Cavalry, more so in say pike and shot formations where pikemen would stand in front of gunners using weapons like Muskets to protect them from Cavalry, the gunners of the 15th century would have been susceptible to cavalry charges after all, due to their not great rate of fire.

@@DoomsdayR3sistance So, the greatsword or "European Greatsword" is predated by the Scottish Claymore(Just SLIIGHTLY shorter a few inches btw.) by 100 year's. And it's use was definitely not against Spears(Kinda Surprised me a bit ngl). It was actually used as an Anti-Personnel weapon during the warring clans period between 14th and 17th century AD in Europe and Scotland. The reason is covered in SEVERAL testimonials such as at the Gate of St. Nazarro where a man stood in the town square and left a heap of corpses(As testified by, i think the Son of Sir Di Fois).
It turns out swinging a nearly 5 foot long hunk of sharpened metal in a large crowd, as was often the case during this period was pretty effective. Was really, really effective and, when up against soldier's with little armor but with high number's, again, double effective. During this period of time there weren't really many MAJOR war's, but there was possibly THOUSANDS of small skirmishes and battles between Clans, Riots in cities and the like that the Claymore was far more effective against. Cavalry, while yes it existed at this time, was mainly reserved for Nobleman who could call it, any small Clan(Like in Scotland where the Claymore was made.) was less likely to have anything like that and if you were Staging a Riot at the time, your probably not owning cavalry yourself. So the Great Sword became a commonly used weapon among the general populace first and only afterwards did it become carried by high ranking member's of Army's and Noblemen with skill to protect themselves when cornered by a lot of enemies.

The spear is not at all superior to the sword in almost all situations.
Hǔ tóu gōu (Hookswords) as you might know them can also counter spears.
The macedonian phalanx use of the sarissa is a great example.

Spears are extremely versatile and a superior weapon when it comes to one-on-one combat due to their long reach and fast thrusts.
However, they lack armor penetration and the users can also be left at disadvantaged due to their momentum after thrusting.
Greatswords are a great choice for penetrating armors and dislodging the speartip to the floor before the spearman can even do anything.

Spears are neither versatile nor superior in one-on-one combat because their long reach is generally a downside in such situations where your opponent will almost certainly try to get inside your thrust. The thrust is the most easily recovered maneuver a spear user has. They in fact are designed specifically for armor penetration, it's basically an ice pick on a stick after all. They were the peak military weapon for thousands of years because of how well they were used in formations, such as the famous Phalanx among others. Only the Swiss Pike regiments really got flexible enough to shift around with them rapidly, though, and that was after muskets had started improving to the point that they were slowly making spears obsolete via the ring bayonet.
Greatswords by contrast absolutely suck at penetrating armor because they apply force along such a long line of impact, permitting the armor to redistribute that force over a much larger surface area. If you want armor penetration, get a flanged mace. A Greatsword is good at the following: Sweeping through swaths of poorly armored opponents, anti-Calvary tactics either by being able to behead the horse and go through the rider as well or by being used as an improvised pike by being grounded and set to receive, having a reach advantage over people using sword-and-board tactics and being able to knock them over at least. In a 1v1, they mostly suck as well, because while they have a lot of momentum, and *can* be comparatively fast, you can't redirect them easily so a good opponent will be able to read you and predict where you are going to be and thus where your are not and exploit that.
If there's one thing i learned from fate, it's that Sabers(sword wielders) have class advantage against lancers

But in 1v1 all sword user has to is parry the first strike,after that he can close the distance where spear will be effectively useless. So while spear does have better chances of first hit,the sword user can definitely beat him as long as they block or dodge the first thrust
Simply put what im saying is, in duels both weapons have their equal advantages. But spear is better for hunting and horse riders.
Yeah, she understood that "hitting with the Back of the Sword" is meant to be a non-lethal Attack, but didn't use the Backside because it was bladed, how nice of Fran!
But most of us would most-likely start hepling Fran as much as we could and most of us would most-likely get overprotective, even tough, she can handle a lot of Situations.
