Imagine being the person who's tape measure fell from their belt and killed the man. The amount of guilt that would be felt is insane.
So true.
Even logically, I would know it's not my fault. But I would always think "if I had only strapped that thing tighter" and "why would this happen to such a person?" forever.
Its just life stuff happens
Id rationalize it down to gravity
@@MikeLaRock88 exactly
Its all part of the plan. God called him home early, so there is no guilt to be had.
In Russia there is a saying that loosely tarnslates to "Every word in the safety handbook is written in human blood". He should have worn the safety hat.
Sad but true.
That's not a Russian saying but rather a global one, which I believe arose out of the American aviation industry.
@@-SUM1- oh yes, American, of course! Proof?
@@smpopov Where was your proof it was Russian?
It's not like such a saying can't independently arise in multiple nations...
@@Airblader If you re-read my post I never claimed the saying originated in Russia, and there alone.
I'm am stating the fact - in Russia there is a saying that I quoted, and it's pretty wide spread.
SUM1 has pointed to the supposed origin, claiming the authorship to be of American origin - hence I wonder, where is the source for this claim?
Imagine living your whole 58 years of life, starting a family, getting a job, and then doing something that you probably do daily, just to get taken out by a fallen tape measure. Life is brutal, RIP.
i can't imagine being almost twice my age and being so inbred and dense that i neglect safety equipment.
especially in favor of a myhtical magical sky daddy....what a joke.
That’s why it’s important to not get complacent.
While uttering the words "God is great."
Yep, a good reminder to follow safety instructions. There's a reason they exist and it helps make life much less brutal.
With a tape measure though was it a big kind or special kind?
That is insane. As a carpenter I can’t even begging to tell you how common it is for that thing to fall out
Thanks
I’m trying to not laugh
Most dropped tool of all
Between the tape and nail puller idk which ends up on the ground more
Crazy how it bounced before it struck him and still managed to kill him, can never expect the unexpected. Rip.
Yea but people are assuming it bounced upwards instead of a glancing blow that didn’t take much velocity away
Like something from final destination
I imagine it bouncing actually gave it more speed, things can only fall a certain speed (Terminal Velocity) so if it bounces on the side of something it could cause the item to gain speed instead of lose it.
@I'm ?
@@Icotheus bruh as something falls its potential energy decreases. Its kinetic energy increases until it hits terminal velocity. The moment it reaches the ground it has no potential energy, only kinetic. And a collision CANT create more energy. And since the mass of the tape measure doesn’t change, and since the earth is effectively still, the tape can’t get any energy from the kinetic energy of the earth. You can look at the equation for kinetic energy (k=0.5*mass*velocity^2) you can see that every method of increasing the velocity, as I
explained above, is not possible.
I’m foreman at a tree cutting company and I can’t stress enough to my guys that a hard hat is the difference from getting a head ache and getting killed
I’m 21 and grew up doing tree cutting also cause of my father’s company and we never worn a helmet once 🤷🏽♂️ we call out our cuts and make sure everyone’s always paying attention looking up. I understand they help but you just gotta be aware at all times. My dads ran that company before I was born and never had an accident
Absolutely. I had a dock leveler fall off of a forklift as I was standing underneath it for maintenance. My hard hat was the difference between a broken and nearly ripped off nose and possibly having my head smashed. Wear your helmets, guys. Mine might’ve saved my life.
Oh cool my dad used do that for a living until one day he fall lucky there were people below and caught him
That's true. Anyone who acts like you can avoid every single accident hasn't been doing it long enough. Crazy stuff happens, I've cut down big old trees and seen pieces of limbs weighing well over a hundred pounds bouncing 30+ feet in the air when the tree hits the ground. And old limbs giving way while your dropping the tree. Any of that hits you without a hard hat you're done. I didn't wear one either when I was young and dumb
From 50 stories up a helmet wouldn't have saved him.
A buddy of mine in college was in construction and almost died because a hard hat fell off of a passing truck and bounced on the ground and hit him in the face and sent him to the hospital and nearly killed him. So hard hats themselves can do damage and even kill too.
Ofc a hardhat would if a tape measure did
Talk about irony
Put a tape measure on next time to prevent hard hat from hittin you
How? Unless that truck was doing 200 mph...

My high school was two stories and had an open design, meaning when you went outside a classroom, you were literally outside. The science classes were on the second floor which only had a cement railing with wide horizontal openings to keep you from falling off. Once we were outside doing some experiment with cylinder weights. A five pound weight fell over and started rolling to the edge of the railing just as the lunch bell rung. So the hall below us was starting to fill with kids. I've never seen a teacher move as fast as mine did to catch that weight from falling over the edge just in time. It’s just tragic, really. Only a few years from retirement… He sounds like a good, hard-working man. RIP to this gentleman.
Construction tape measures are pretty damn heavy. They're made to withstand a fall like that. What's crazy is it bounced off something and then hit the man. God bless him and his loved ones.🙏🏿

There's no tape measure on this planet that's built to survive a 50 story fall
When ever some one gets hurt on a contruction site, that person almost always gets the blame mainly because the company does not want to be liable. Also workers working high up near the edge are suppose to wear on each tool a Safety Line Rope Lanyard which would have prevented such things happening.
Stay away from the construction site.
Vee Two I like how you live life
Foreman’s are for the most part cheap and many large building jobs are micromanaged by crappy companies like Clark and Whiting Turner who try to do everything as fast as possible
You can’t lanyard everything in your tool bags.
@Hagmire84 It didn't bounce off anything. Measuring tape isn't exactly aerodynamic and doesn't hold on to energy very well. The moment it would've hit anything it would loose a ton of energy and maybe even be destroyed. The tape hit him with full force from a terminal velocity fall on his head. A helmet would've definitely saved his life.

We had a similar accident at Holmes Hospital when there was an annex being built. A construction worker dropped a wrench and yelled, "Lookout below!" A man, with his helmet on, looked up to see what was falling and the wrench hit him on the forehead, killing him. It was only a 4 story building to the roof. Happened in the early 70s.
Wow
So looking up killed him?
@@jimwerther No. The construction worker who yelled, "Look out below!" killed him, or at least caused his death. If he would have kept his mouth shut when he dropped the wrench, the hard-hat wearing man down on the ground wouldn't have looked up and the wrench would have hit his hard hat or shoulder instead of hitting his forehead. If the wrench had hit his shoulder, he would have been injured but not dead.
Then again, if the man on the ground would have run for cover and not looked up, he would have been uninjured. If man on the ground had been hit on the shoulder because the construction worker on the forth floor roof of that building because there was no alarm called out. Like, "Look out below!" he would have probably been pissed and the construction site foreman would have probably fired him.
Who knows. Knowing this, will you call out, "Look out below!" if you drop a wrench off a 4 story building? Will you have your wrench tied off to your tool belt to make it virtually impossible to drop if you find yourself high up in the air with a wrench or a hammer?

Whoever let him into the site should've made sure he had a helmet on. Most likely a semi driver wouldn't have had one with him, so the construction company may be liable. And when you're working that high up, your tools should be tethered so they can't fall and kill someone.
Unfortunately that’s not how it works. Truck drivers who make these deliveries do usually have hard hats in their cabs. And no, the general contractor(GC) might not necessarily be liable. As long as signs are posted, it is every individual’s responsibility to wear the proper PPE while they are on site. Even if the person at the gate did say something about a hard hat, how are they going to make sure everyone keeps it on? Typically, if you’re in the truck you don’t even have to put it on until you step out. GC’s are required to have safety personnel on site who can remove people from the site, issue citations, etc. But even then, they can’t be everywhere 100% of the time. Therefore, when you are on a construction site, everyone including you is considered “the safety guy”. A lot of projects(big ones like this, not usually the small ones) even require you to go through their safety training before you can step foot on site. Even if you’re just making a delivery and will only be there for 5 minutes.
So as tragic and really horrible as this story is, it’s not really the GC’s fault unless there’s a specific rule about tethering equipment at that height that was violated. Which by the way, is an excellent point. My last jobsite did require tethered equipment, but only for workers who were doing work on the outside or within 6ft of the edge of the building. There was no tethering requirement if you were doing work 6ft or further from the edge. So in this case, if a worker was 10 ft from the edge and dropped a tape measure which then slid or was accidentally kicked off, no rules were broken but that doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous. When you’re on a job site it’s not enough to assume everything will go great and that nothing will happen. You always step foot on site as if tools are falling from the top floor.
I didn’t read through shoemaker’s dissertation but I’m guessing the summary is it’s not someone else’s fault. It was an accident that could have ended without death if he followed standard safety rules. God is good, but he will kill you in a second. And, you can’t tether all your tools to yourself, that’s just insane.
Absolutely right. Company are getting used to by pass the rules to blame the.victim then. Disgusting
@@DJDisalwaysright I've actually worked security for a large foundry, and you had to have safety equipment before you were allowed in. Same when I used to deliver to a lot of manufacturing companies. If someone can sue because they spilled hot coffee in their lap from the drive through, they can sue and win for this...
@@Ponderosa303 Just because you have signs up, that doesn't make you immune from being sued. Every place that I've visited that required hard hats won't let you go in until you have one on. Foundries, quarries, manufacturing plants etc.
That way of death is even more sad than the actual death
this is so sad, poor guy, idiots need to be more careful, especially that high up, not like dropping it from a 3 story building
Imagine seeing someone saying "God is good", then they get struck dead by a falling tape measure!
God's love is immeasurable I guess.
@@_SamDoesStuff_ 👌
God is good. We all are going to die someday, God is using this incident to call people to Himself. The man who died is in heaven and is grateful that his story is being used by God to glorify Himself. Where will you be when you die? Only way to heaven is through Jesus. John 14:6, Romans 10:9-13.
Sright to heaven
I bet your ass whoever was listening to him had strong disbeliefs about god after that
Ah yes, things I have in my kitchen: plates, cutlery, microwave, toaster, and tape measure.
Guy be like: "Who doesn't put a tape measure in the kitchen?"
I would brobably find a box of gold (5.56 or 9mm) in one of the drawers.
I actually have one lmao, kitchen has multipurpose drawers
@@ice_wolf76 I think that's brass lol
@@adamofblastworks1517 I know but the price of ammo can be really high so thats why I say"box of gold"
I used to work as a bricklayer for a company that would mainly repair and rebuild chimneys. I was taught to never wear a tape measure on my belt while on the roof for this exact reason. (and we weren't working fifty stories up either!)
Oh wow the irony of the company’s name and logo is amazing
Is nobody going to talk about how the news reporter literally said Inc instead of LLC?
Simply ill informed of the difference.
I saw it as well also they say the truck driver said God is good the Arabic translation to that is allahu Akbar. Just pointing that out because this subthread is pointing out possible perceived abnormalities that were previously not seen in this 6 year old video. So keep it on topic
Also sheetrock is believed by many to be a subpar building material
Sending condolences to this incredible God fearing man’s family, May he Rest In Peace ❤️
I think I would like to go while praising god.I don't want to go in sin!

So we all back here huh... 6 years later

You ever heard of everlasting life? This world is owned by satan .

@Shaheen Jackson "God" can take care of itself. It doesn't need help from a mere human.
Everyone loses because that dude died and the one 50 stories above has to go all the way back down. That's also just unlucky, it feels like something out of final destination.
I know from experience how heavy a tape measure can be. That's like 5 concentrated pounds and falling at full force is basically getting hit by a truck
Everywhere in my city, there's construction sites. I ALWAYS walk across the street or take a longer route. Never walk underneath scaffolding as they are known to collapse.
U must feel like ur living in "final destination"!?
Scaffolding is not known to collapse wtf. It would only fail if it was installed improperly, which is pretty hard to do.
@@bobsinger7127 .... I didn't say every damn scaffolding collapses.
Of course, when it's not installed properly it would collapse and you wouldn't know until it happens. 🤬.
@@6100GG known to collapse means often, know english?
@@ryana8022 you would be surprised how many scaffold accidents happen in construction.
I used to work for a sound installation and service company and I had a hard hat because the law was when you enter an area where hard hats are required, you MUST wear one. It actually saved me one day when I was moving a ten foot step ladder that someone (me) had left a 4 pound hammer on the top step. It bounced directly off my hard hat. No injury.
Wow congratulations on being alive
I've done the same. I've seen it happen to other people.

I nearly had a 2x4 hit me on the head when it fell from a roof. On a job that didn't have a need for hard hats. It's scary stuff.
