  • Three massive cranes collapsed during Hurricane Irma last year and all three were from the same manufacturer, Terex-Peiner, which still has cranes in South Florida.

    I work on the motors used on these cranes. The four swing motors mounted to the turntable should have had the brakes unlocked to allow the crane to swing freely with the wind.

      Usually a tower crane is tuning itself into the direction of the wind if it's not operating, to offer as little surface as possible to the wind.
      It seems the jib got wind from the side and collapsed to the side, so something was wrong.

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 Před 3 lety +2

      @@hdj81Vlimited if Wind comes from opposite directions it would eliminate each other - just look how the cranes collapsed, it don't even turn a little bit.
      What is surprising however how the counterweight is mounted, it's rear arm is relatively long and the weight is relatively far from the turntable, what may be a factor. The jib always has to have more resistance for the wind then the rear arm holding the counterweight, to enable it to turn it into the wind. If the rear arm has too large surface it acts like a sail preventing the jib from turning, which leads to a massive sideway force onto the jib and it can collapse in the way it did.
      This is the reason why it's not recommended to mount advertising signs ohne rear arm of such a crane without checking the allowed size together with the crane manufacturer

    It's not a hammer head it's a saddle jib flat top it's not a turn table its a slew ring . jib snaps off and crane collapsed because it's not put in out of service meaning crane wasn't put in to free slew meaning brake on slew motor had not been released so crane can move freely in wind design fault is the small tower section between slew ring and jib with the pressure on bottom of small tower + weight of jib + weight load + pressures of movement of load made by slew motor on crane put steel under high twisting pressure that put stress fracture in steel than driver didn't put crane in to free slew when finishing he's day of work = crane collapsed

      A 315 IS a hammer-head style twr crane. Linden-comansa made types are flat-tops.
      Yes, it should have been put in weather-vane mode.
      The person controlling them are called an “operator”.
      There are other things that should be done to prepare a twr crane to weather a major storm that were likely overlooked as well.
