  • Firefighters in one California city have come under attack for sharing a photo to social media showing a car that was illegally parked next to a fire hydrant and had its windows smashed out.

      He also simply assumes the fire hose can bend at the angles to go around or above the car, which it can't and may have actually damaged the car more than just a broken window from the pressure of it trying to straighten.

      I am a retired volunteer firefighter you need to understand that a fire truck only holds about 500 gallons of water. When the hoses are fully charged they will empty the truck in less than 2 minutes. Any bend in the hose will block the flow pressure by 50% and people will die and property will be destroyed. You are illegally parked they will break your windows then you will get a ticket for illegal parking and your vehicle will be towed. It’s not the fire department’s fault that you parked illegally

    I love the run the hose over the car argument cause it shows 2 things:
    1. You didn't go to school to realize that it reduced pressure due to the hose being bent
    2. This could theoretically cause even more damage to the car as the pressure could potentially be so high that it the car to bend

    The solution is quite simple:
    DON'T PARK IN FRONT OF A FIRE HYDRANT.
    It takes a true narcissist to park in front of a fire hydrant, and then get mad at the firefighters for trying to save people's lives, because you're too self-absorbed to park somewhere else.

      No, it changes colors based on what city you live in. In Chicago, it’s yellow, if they paint the curb at all. I live in a neighboring city, and they do not paint the curb anything. Until today, I had no idea other places paint the curb red.

    The more and sharper turns in the hose, the less water pressure you'll have at the other end, you need to keep the hose as straight as possible. Driver is lucky to have only two windows taken out.

    Growing up I remmeber my mom always telling me about how you need to be careful where you park as this could happen. Since then when I started learning how to drive to even now, I always have an expectation that if I park infront of a hydrant, the fire department will have full justification to smash my windows to get a hose to it and there would be no reason for me to be mad other than at myself for being stupid.

I know people at work who back out of parking spaces ON FORKLIFTS, who don't bother looking to see if anyone's behind them. A forklift weighs more than your car, what do you think's going to happen if you hit someone with it because you're not paying attention. I've also hit people because they weren't paying attention... and they get upset with me, when they backed into me, who wasn't moving or tried to swerve out of the way.

      I've seen a video of a real entitled d*ck blocking a fire truck somewhere in France. He wouldn't move over for the fire truck and its sirens screeching and lights were flashing. The driver backed up a few feet and RAMMED him. When people had the nerve (WHY???) to defend the d*ck, several pointed out that what the fire truck driver did was 100% legal because his lights/sirens were on so the driver was required by law to move his ugly butt out of the way.

    Everyone knows it's illegal to park in front of a fire hygiene. Either people are too stupid to check whether it is okay to park before getting out of their vehicle or so entitled to think they can park there anyway, and in both those cases they deserve what's coming to them. Good people accept accountability for their errors. These people are lucky they just got off with broken windows, they could have massive fines too.

      I don’t live in the states so I may be wrong in saying this, but it’s definitely a similar situation you’d get here in the UK. I think an element of it is that people are incapable of taking responsibility for their wrongdoings, and heaven forbid if they ever needed to say “sorry”. So, rather than accepting their mistake and rectifying it, they try to shift the blame onto someone else.
      (e.g. “yeah I know I did this thing, but THEY did a worse thing look” and pointing fingers at the firemen instead)
      It’s really tragic that people have become like this. It’s not everyone of course, but it’s a high enough percentage for it to be a real problem.

      Most people forget that laws are often wrote in blood or in disaster. The fire hydrant law was probably enacted after a fatal fire where acess to water was an issue. Yes, with time, many laws become quite useless or lose their significance... but some of them don't.

    NO big secret. Firefighters have been doing it this way for at least 75 years. Maybe when we still had Model T's they had clearance to run the hose under the car. It looks BRUTAL. But have you ever seen somebody burned or suffocated in a FIRE? That's truly horrible!

      I'm a volunteer firefighter and YES we would have, absolutely 100%, guaranteed, especially if bowl cut got stupid. We don't have time for dumbassery, there are lives literally on the line and some of them are our fellow firefighters.
