Avery TRAIN TUNNEL road and more!!! - Idaho BDR | Part 2

- In this video… we continue south after biking the Hiawatha Trail (an abandoned train track with many tussles and tunnels). This section of the Idaho Backcountry Discovery Route is one of the most scenic drives in Idaho! It follows the St Joe River along the old train route and includes many train tunnels through the mountains. You do need to exercise caution while entering the tunnels as the visibility can be limited and tunnel width is somewhat narrow. What a special treat!
This drive is part of Section 6 of the Idaho BDR from Wallace to Pierce. The town of Avery is a MUST stop to explore. It is packed with railroad history and a well-kept park with original train car. Shortly after passing through Avery the route goes off road and progressively becomes rougher and more remote. There are plenty of opportunities to hike and explore along the way; take you time slow down and enjoy!
The next major destination is Dworshak Reservoir which provides an excellent paddling opportunity. There are gems like this throughout the BDR route. Of course, there are lots of gravel road miles as well.

Excellent! I just spend the middle part of the summer in the area, I was camped along the Selway River with clear, beautiful water flowing. I was fishing and made my way upstream only to run into a dead deer, most of its body in the water and rotting with maggots. It smelled of a foulness that shocked me. Made me see the creeks/river quite differently after that. Saw a mountain lion, 2 bears and just about any other critter you might imagine while there. It's fantastic up there. The big southwestern chunk of Montana is really nice, too.

Hi, folks. Great adventures. Might I make a suggestion though? I found myself trying several times to get a better idea of your location at any given point as you stopped to explore. Might be helpful to periodically drop a frame or two of a map of that vicinity showing the specific location you are at at that moment as well as its relation to nearby identifiable landmarks.

Thanks for the feedback!! Yes I can definitely see how that would be helpful. We may incorporate that for upcoming trips... however many of the locations will remain unmarked especially hot springs. Half the fun is exploring yourself and the internet has sadly caused many remote gems to become overrun. There is a balance to everything. Keep watching! More to come...
I bladed and rolled the mile long tunnel before they opened it to bikes..Some places they had buried railroad bridges and when I vibrated rolled them large holes opened up that went to the bottom..
That would be an unexpected surprise!
