  • Grizzly Peak is in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Alberta and is rated as Difficult. The All Trails App lists it as just over 6km up and back with 950m of elevation. Many reviews state that the hike is more like 8km in length. Most people do this as an out and back trail, but it we had read reviews and seen maps showing that it can be done as a loop with a very steep descent if travelling anticlockwise. We checked our GPS and still got it wrong, travelling down a dangerous ravine which came to a drop off. At one point the scree became a rock slide. My mate Pete grabbed the other end of my hiking pole to help me get to safety. Our 4 hour hike turned into 7:30 when we found that he had to climb back up this dangerous scree between two ridges.

Intense! We all make mistakes. 6 years ago when Ha Ling didn't have all the stairs and things it does now, my friend and I completely scrambled up the side of the mountain off the path completely. It was pretty scary, we were on all fours digging our fingers into the mountain basically. We were young and stupid lol
Luckily all my hikes from then have been great, I always go down the way I came up. Not worth trying to bypass.

Yeh, we certainly learnt from our mistakes. Although, I'm back in Australia now with no mountains to climb 😫

Damn, in all my hikes I’ve never scene a rockslide that bad. So dangerous, I’m glad no one go hurt. I hiked this mountain and made a mistake myself, only it was on the way up. I quickly realized I was on the stupid trail that was marked on all trails and seized any efforts of ascending. Instead I traversed around the lower cliffs of the peak’s backside in order not to back-track, and then meet back up with the original trail right before summit. On the way down I took the regular trail. I don’t know why anyone would want to do the loop. The regular way is much faster and less stressful

I agree. After watching some youtube videos of some people doing the loop, I can see that with my minimal experience hiking mountains that it is not for me. I certainly learnt a big lesson on this hike- be well informed of which route to take BEFORE attempting it. We were very lucky and I hope that others can learn from our experience.

@@andyw3341 it’s very difficult to make choices on the mountain. Staying calm and assessing your options is key! I’m sure this video will help others

Hi there. I used Google earth and zoomed in to mark the trail with the measuring tools from Memory, then set it to turn and took a screen recording.
