Really enjoyed this video. I was part of a group of 3 that climbed the Mt Robertson ridge in 1976. We didn't make the summit as we had our "mountain" dog with us at he time. The climb was much more remote back then. The Smith Dorrien road connecting Spay Lakes with the Kananaskis had not yet been built. The view from the ridge was spectacular. You could see Mt. Assiniboine off in the north west and the French glacier and the Kananaskis Lakes to the south east. Thanks for sharing.
I’m glad you enjoyed it Peter! I bet it brought back some great memories of your trip in 1976! That would have been quite the challenge accessing the approach route back then I bet! Which route did you use? Up the Robertson glacier, or the French glacier - Haig glacier (like my group did)? Kudos to your dog for navigating that terrain!! It’s hard enough with hands to grab holds. I love the exploratory feel of some of the routes that are accessible now with relative ease. I wish I had known that a person could do this sort of thing when I was a young adult - I didn’t start doing this stuff until I was in my early 40s.

I was reading an account of an ascent of Mount Gloria that I found by Lillian Gert and Christian Hasler Jr. from 1934 and my mind quickly got drawn into imagining the challenges that folks like yourself had to overcome just to get to the base of a mountain!!

Burstall Pass parking lot on the Smith-Dorrien / Spray Lakes Reservoir Road is the trailhead. There are a couple of methods to approach the south bank of the French Creek drainage - the easiest being down a maintained access road that takes you across a footbridge that crosses French Creek.
Hey there. I really dig your videos, and you've given me some good ideas for peaks to try around AB. Would you consider ditching the music in these videos? As a viewer, I can definitely do without the same old CZcams stock music and I'd much rather hear the crunching of the snow and rocks or the chatter between your scrambling partners. Even the wind would be better than having to immediately reach for the mute button. Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Derrek I appreciate the feedback. You, don't dig the funky music? lol... free, non-copyrighted music is hard to find. Unfortunately, by GoPro is very old (Hero3), and I have it in a housing, so all a person hears through the waterproof housing is squeaks and rattles from the mount (and small amount of wind noise if the wind is > 50 km/h)... so, I turn off all background sounds that the GoPro records except the odd time is picks up something interesting at a summit. Good thing there is a mute button that you can choose to press ;D
There are others that feel the same way… especially the transition to the ledge. Question - how would you protect the traverse across the 70 m summit ridge? I assume that’s the spot that you say you’d be more comfortable with pro?… or on the ledge as well?
We useto snowmobile kananaskis country from 1972 thru 1978 ..that whole area was a mecca for snowmobilers back then
