DOG ATTACK 101 for Cyclists: 3rd Edition w/Aaron Smith/Gainesville, TX/Cooke County, Texas/Amputee

  • The dogs in this 3rd edition are in Cooke County, Texas. No dogs were harmed in the making of this video, and if they were, then that part is edited out of the video. I carry a marine airhorn and a trekking pole with me, but the camera is an important defense weapon too on my bicycle rides. I am missing my right leg above the knee joint and I have metal in my good real leg too from a previous trimalleolar ankle fracture. So, I am disabled. But, I still ride my bicycle about 5,000 - 7000 miles per year on country gravel roads with a prosthetic cycling leg and on a regular standard bicycle.

I know this may sound cold, but as a hiker who has had several encounters with loose aggressive dogs (owners think being in the woods means they don't need a leash), I just spray the dogs with bear or pepper spray without hesitation. I don't play games anymore. I also wouldn't hesitate to shoot one if I were armed.

It is a massive problem where I live. I like the air horn. I'll be getting one tomorrow. I'm making a carved club with a shaped handle out of Desert Ironwood which is the hardest and heaviest wood I've ever worked. I also carry a water bottle with amonia and water and cayene pepper for when they are too close to use my bear spray. Been bitten twice and had dozens and dozens of really close calls. I'm going to get a horn and try that as my first line of defense. I finally talked my daughter into riding with me and she was so traumatized by the numerous dog encounters we had that day that she won't ride anymore.

I have a lot of experience with dogs while cycling. I agree with just about everything in this video. Each cyclist has to find what works best for them. In all my encounters with dogs I have yet to meet an apologetic dog owner. What is a testament to the quality of this video is I go out of my way to avoid aggressive dogs while cycling including changing my route then I spent over an hour watching dogs attack a cyclist in this video. Great video but now I will have nightmares 😯.

I have been terrified of dogs ever since I was 6 years old when neighborhood dog chased me. 53 years later, I’m still frightened of them, even the tiniest of poochies. Just read where a woman was severely mauled by pit bulls while walking. Owners should contain their dogs. The most wealthiest man in the US could not give me his money to do what you’re doing. I’d have a heart attack just from the barking. Be careful.

@snack. PLEASE do not take your little ones out w you for a walk. This situation you describe is waaaay too dangerous. It would be much better if you have a guy walk w you, hopefully who has a legal gun with him. The podcaster seems to be having some success w an air horn. I am going to buy an air horn too. But that only deters dogs for a moment. it will take you too long to get out of range. This podcaster has much more life experience and is larger and probably more authoritative than you. You might try loudly commanding it by yelling "Sit!" I will probably end up getting a gun because the probability of a pitbull attack is getting higher each year. With 2 babies in tow, you will not have enough time to protect them or yourself.
Call Animal Control again and the Sheriff. Tell them firmly you need protection from this stray dog. You are a resident and have a right to feel safe in your neighborhood. Tell them you will keep calling until someone comes out. Call the local library to get the name and phone of your town mayor and your county executive. When you see that dog again, have the Sheriff and Animal Control on speed dial so they can come pick it up since it is loose and unlicensed. Let them know you and your babies are in danger.
Please go to a great website called Dogsbite. You can find info on Pitbulls and other dangerous dogs. Pitbulls have the highest kill rate of all dogs.
If Animal Control or the Sheriff treat you dismissively, make a copy of this news article and give it to them:
May 3 article in Daily Mail online about a SC mother of 3 attacked by a pack of pitbulls. "EXCLUSIVE: 'They were eating her alive': Sister of mom-of-three whose arms were ripped off during pit bull attack..."
      Please stay safe, dear.

      @Nancy-fm1ie Před 2 lety +1

@snack. Also, if any dog bites you or your babies, you must call the Sheriff immediately to take you to the hospital. You must get any bites treated IMMEDIATELY to prevent infection. The Kyleen article link I sent previously reports how Kyleen may lose her leg because dog bites are so infectious. Please don't try to treat any nips or bites on your own. Young babies have fragile immune systems and cannot fight off infection well as it is.
I am praying for your safety, dear.

@snack. Here is valuable info for you.
      "Reporting a dangerous dog
Many people are unaware that one does not have to wait for a "bite" to report a threatening (menacing), loose or stray dog. Many attacks occur due to this lack of understanding. Always report problem dogs to your city or county animal control or sheriff's department. If that dog ends up biting and seriously hurting a person, but there is no documented paper trail behind it, authorities will have their hands tied and the victim may have no recourse for medical expenses."

Some of these dogs are going to get hit by a car running out into the road like that. Also, do they react like this to people on horseback? I should imagine that could get very dangerous if a horse reacts badly and throws the rider off. It's crazy how the owners leave the dogs free roaming with no secure fence. I have one of those air horns and a can of dog spray just in case. I had two pitbulls run into my yard and they tried to attack the feral cats. Thankfully the cats got up a tree and out of harm's way pretty rapidly. I had to use my big mouth to scare them off, I sounded like a Man yelling at them. Doesn’t Texas protect you at all ? This is bullshit. In Ohio it’s in your right to shoot if a dog comes onto the road to bite you. You have some skills. I ride a trike I’m at face level to dogs. UPS man road over almost lost his arm. They give a dog in that county two bites your out. That was fucked up. He almost lost his arm. In my county it’s your right to kill it. I love dogs ,but I don’t want a bite. I hurt my shoulder trying to keep a pit off of me. He finally got bored thank God . I carry a laser now and a gun. Hope I never have to use it going to court wouldn’t be fun or having people hate me because I killed their dog. Laser wouldn’t work in the rain . I love riding the country roads around me.

Yes, Texas does protect cyclists. If you fear for your safety and a dog is attacking you in the road, then you can shoot it dead.

Looks like res dogs have escaped. I have monkey lights in my tires and a JBL Pulse 5. First night riding this year within 2 blocks gave chase. I may to get a horn of some kind.
