  • All of the dogs in this 1st edition are in Cooke County, Texas. No dogs were harmed in the making of this video, and if they were, then that part is edited out of the video. I carry a marine airhorn and a trekking pole with me, but the camera is an important defense weapon too on my bicycle rides. I am missing my right leg above the knee joint and I have metal in my good real leg too from a previous trimalleolar ankle fracture. So, I am disabled. But, I still ride my bicycle about 5,000 miles per year on country gravel roads with a prosthetic cycling leg and on a regular standard bicycle.

    It's hard to deal with them on a bike. When I was a kid, my dad had a dog that always chased his truck biting at the tires. Everyday this went on. He was scared of running the dog over killing or injuring him. A friend said let me help and tied a white tshirt through the wheel. Next trip, the dog latched onto it but it wrapped around his jaws and couldn't get loose. After several flips and banging his head against the ground was let free. Never chased him again.

Although the pole is a pain to carry, I can’t count how many times I’ve been so glad that I had it. I will also have to try the air horn. Aggressive off-leash dogs have caused me great distress and anguish, as they make me hesitant to engage in my favorite outdoor activities, thus reducing my quality of life. I’m hoping that you might be willing to offer any wisdom on these 2 questions:
    1. What mentality am I lacking by being afraid to go outdoors for a ride because I’m afraid of being harassed by dogs?
    2. How do you deal with the owners? I’ve had dog owners yell at me for swinging my pole at their dog.

      There's nothing wrong with being afraid. Your ability to get out and ride anyway shows that you are as brave as they come. Cycling is great 99% of the time. But, 1% of the time is very risky and dangerous. Owners can be irrational, like dogs. But, you are in the right. You have the right to ride down a public road without being attacked by dogs. The law is on your side.

      Dogs are used as a drug for the socially impaired. They choose not to seek treatment but instead get some braindead mutt that only understands food and proceed to believe that it loves them. The dog begs for food (that’s all dogs ever do they are obsessed with food) they believe it’s affection but any rational thinking would lead you to the conclusion of food begging.
      It’s pathetic.
      Dogs are the most dumb creatures on this earth and are only driven by animalistic tendencies. One of the most recent videos I watched showed the thing jumping from two floors, falling and certainly breaking bones, whining, barking and running away from the ground where it fell.

And pepper spray doesn't always work (I am making a vid on that now). Lucky you aren't on a touring bike. I had a pair of Rottweilers charge directly out into the road at me once. After that I started getting off the bike to quell the chase instinct (it usually worked), and use the bike as a shield... and later found out that that could be a crime if it doesn't quell the chase instinct and I do end up having to defend myself, because I didn't try to flee. Even though my average speed is about 10mph. They will literally make it out like I can do over 30mph on a Rohloff equipped touring bike and claim the Rohloff is a motor and that I am fast because I could do 18 miles in an hour and 50 minutes due to a tail wind during the first part of the ride. And the owners will claim it would never run into the road at me as long as I am on the bike. And running at me and barking isn't aggression, it's just "excitement". These freaks will lie up ANYTHING to make someone else guilty for what their unrestrained dog causes. I cannot even consider that fact that I am on a road that people go quite fast down, and me swerving over the road to deal with the dog could cause a traffic incident if someone hits me or swerves around me. I'm just going to go ahead and let the damn dogs bite me from now on so I can get the owners on a harboring dangerous animal charge. I have no duty to defend myself after all.

      Thanks! I have been and continue to get attacked so often that I have a plan for most scenarios. I would use spray in certain situations. But, it doesn't work that great because cycling is inherently windy. Wind can blow that spray back in your face and totally miss the dog. It can also get on your fingers and in your eyes.... especially on a long, hot, sweaty ride. The canister can also explode in the heat, which can also happen with the airhorn, so keep that in mind..... In your situation, you were probably really caught off guard. It may have worked to quickly stop your bike and yell "no!". There are just so many possibilities of how it can go and the safest thing you can do is to prepare for everything concieveable that you could run into.

    A while back I had to move from the suburbs, where people learn to keep their dogs in yards, to a small town in E. TN, where I was riding down roads like this with large properties that have unrestrained dogs running at/after me. I never did get bit. There were a couple of times that a dog running after me almost got hit by a car coming the other way. A few times I would encounter a hill so steep I’d have to get off and walk. Most dogs just make a lot of noise, especially if I’m just walking by and not riding. But you never know. That air horn seems to work really well at stopping them in their tracks, even though yours sounded kind of weak compared to air horns I’ve heard before. I wish I had thought of that when I was out, I’m back in the suburbs now. I did bring along some pepper spray, but never used it. I rode by many places that had horses too. Only once did a horse ever come running across from the barn on a hill far away, up to the fence, to see who I was. Most horses don’t even look up. I had never seen one come running across the yard just like the dogs. It was friendly though. And the dogs were just noisy. In one spot, it was a small front yard with a man sitting out front. When his dog came after me, as it had done several times before, I stopped and yelled at the man about the lawsuit that would follow from any bites I might get from his dog. He was probably surprised to even see someone on a bike pass his house. Given how hilly the area was, bicyclists were not that common!

    Nice video. I wear an Acme Thunderer 58.5 whistle on a lanyard. I also use pepper spray as a last resort. Aggressive pit bull dog took me down recently when it went straight for my front wheel at 15+ mph. Caught me off guard. I'm recovering.

    Does anyone in Texas actually have control of their dogs? I am from New York and was visiting my son in San Antonio,I walk 10 miles every day and I stopped walking while I was their because I got attacked by two dogs,Chased into a ditch by a pickup truck with some idiot laughing at me.TX is not a friendly state!

      @aaroncitius11  Před 2 lety +2

      Some do and some don't. The great thing about Texas though is that I can choose the defend myself however I want. If I need to kill a dog to defend myself, then I can do that. I just can't upload those videos to CZcams because they don't allow it.

    Long time owner of big dogs and was a paperboy long time ago. I feel your pain...literally. Cheapest deterrent? Which everyone probably knows....spray bottle with sturdy stream of water to the face. Con is, only good for close range and on foot mostly. Does not harm but stops 'most' . Even at home it's great. Make the bottle of water the bad cop.

      I was a paper boy too and I own a German Shepherd. I threw 100 newspapers from my bicycle every day after school and on Saturday nights in the worst part of town. Rocks worked best for me. Fortunately, there was a nice police officer who would shoot the meanest dogs for me to keep me safe. He was a great man.

    They make electric bicycle horns that clip to your handlebars, I wonder if those would work on dogs?

    • @aaroncitius11
      @aaroncitius11  Před 2 lety

      I'm able to hold my air horn and point it at the dog when I activate it. You wouldn't be able to direct a handlebar mounted horn at the dog. Therefore, it would be less effective. A horn is only a 1st line if defense. Be ready for it to fail and have a second and even third line of defense too.

  • @mysticbengals521

    The air horn and the stick are good ideas. Cattle prod works well too.... I keep dogs on my property for defense but I have a fully fenced parcel to keep them in. I'm steadily working on increasing fence height to 8 ft. The front is 8 ft, the back is 8 ft, one long side same, I have 3/4 of the wood posts in to raise the other long side to 8 ft.. I am not on a traveled road either - I'm way off grid.... The original fence is 5 ft which is a lot more than most in the area have.. I don't understand people who have their dogs loose.

      An air horn is less likely to work on foot with a dog in tow. I recommend carrying something else too.

    Why are there so many loose dogs? That's worrying! I live in the UK, I cycle all round the countryside where I live, there are some very rural areas and I have only once been chased by a loose dog in the suburbs of my city. I stopped, phoned the police and they were there in 10 minutes. They take that kind of thing very seriously in case a child gets attacked or even killed. When the dog is caught it will be impounded and, if the owner can be traced, they are often prosecuted.

  • @ona3304

    This is my everyday problem too. I use my electric scooter as my primary transportation to work or market (manageable distance, cant afford car) and everyday this dogs on street would suddenly jump out from where they are and start chasing me. 😭 But thankfully they would chase me and bark at me for few seconds then stops on their own. But I will try different methods including this to see how it works. Just hate that so many people let their dogs lose without a care that they could scare or harm someone even indirectly like how I see a cyclist tried to swerve immediately to the right to avoid the dogs sudden appearance while there's a car coming by just few feet behind him. I hope those owners who let their dogs like these gets chased by random dogs on street multiple times too so they will know how it feels.
