It’s about the war of 1812, a war no one won. Francis Scott Key was on a British prison ship to negotiate an exchange. It’s about a man alone on your enemies ship that is bombarding your country and wondering the whole night if your home would remain in tact. The people in that fort are your friends, fathers, brothers, and cousins. And then the relief of seeing your flag still standing. It is pretty much about our version of the blitz. We lived to fight another day. After the British army was forced to retreat from DC because of a tornado and heavy storms, we took back our capital and fought until a standstill. Alot of these ad libs and whatnot take away from the emotion and the meaning behind the lyrics and what Key was conveying with them. It was originally a poem and was later put to the tune of an English drinking song.
I'm an Aussie and had a big chuckle and was looking for my ear plugs after the first few performances !!
We've definitely had our share of complete shockers doing our anthem... although , thankfully NOT as atrocious as the American ones !!! 🙄🤦😂😂😂🇦🇺👍😎

I TOTALLY BLAME the producer's , co-ordinaters , agents/ musical directors because when these people are booked, they should be told and it should be STIPULATED that they are to sing it " as is " ... WITHOUT voice acrobatics and ad ons and inappropriate , unwanted " personal " vocal WORKOUTS !!!
And , there would've been behind the scenes previous practice sessions and SURELY the manager's etc and other people connected to the event, would've heard the " star " during rehearsal and heard and seen their " intention " of how they were going to perform it !! And upon hearing that the event music co-ordinator should've then given that individual instructions on what to do and NOT TO DO !!! It's a FAIL on MANY levels !!! 🙄🤦

When I was in middle school, I sang the national anthem in front of my class. I spent the weeks leading up to it reading the lyrics and practicing to make sure I didn't make any mistakes.
So I find it crazy that some of these professionals forgot the lyrics. My stakes were significantly less and I feel like I prepared more then some of these guys.

Great list, but, speaking for my fellow classical singers, I understand you have to know your audience, but calling operatic renditions "cruel and unusual punishment" seems a bit mean and extreme. She knew the words and sang them in tune. True, Opera isn't really for sports, but getting a higher spot on the list than that diva-finger pitch trainwreck is unfair in my opinion.
