- Popeye 1980
The adventures of the sailor man and his friends in the seaside town of Sweethaven.
Director: Robert Altman
Writers: Jules Feiffer (screenplay), E.C. Segar (based on characters by)
Stars: Robin Williams, Shelley Duvall, Ray Walston - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Shelley Duval was a great choice to play Olive Oyl.
She was. And she was excellent in The Shining that same year, too! Quite a contrast of characters!

Someone said she was BORN to play Olive and I agree. Wish I could remember who said it.
I think everyone is cast perfectly. It’s a cartoon brought to life.
My favorite thing about Popeye is his little mumbling voice he does sometimes and Robin nailed it perfectly 😂
Yes, but the microphone couldn't pick it up so they actually had Robin Williams re-record the dialogue, pumped up the volume, and dubbed it.
😂 I remember that part lolll
@@davidlafleche1142ah, so that’s why the audio sounded weird! Thanks, I never knew that info.
@@ATMyles If you watch the old Max Fleischer productions, you'll notice that Popeye usually didn't get close-ups. It was easier to animate his mouth when he was far away, because it wasn't necessary to match it perfectly with the dialogue. Most of the time, his mouth moved very little or not at all.
@@davidlafleche1142 ah. That’s interesting. Thanks!
R.I.P Robin Willams.
1951 - 2014. We Missed You Very Much. X
short life span
The casting here is amazing. Every character is pretty spot on. They nailed the world Popeye lived in. Popeye’s cartoon world is pretty weird.
True very true. Reminds me of the Flintstones movie except Rosie o donnell as Betty but she wasn't horrible in the role.
and they took many many drugs on that particular set ^^ but who cares its a fun and good movie.
Agreed, perhaps the whole cast was perfect!!
Robin Williams was a terrible casting. Just be honest.
@@Lord_Vadr pretty much perfect to me.
Released 40 years ago today. Robin Williams first starring role in a movie.
And now 43years ago
I loved how this Movie was basically a live action cartoon, what with the way everybody moved and acted.
I was thinking the same thing
This movie is very...weird. It's one of those things where you suspect everyone involved in its making was high as a kite the whole time, because if they were all sober, they have a lot of very strange decisions to answer for. But, then again, the sheer weirdness of it all is part of the movie's charm. You probably had to see it as a child in the 1980s to ever really appreciate it, or just be a diehard Altman fan. You certainly have to admire his willingness to completely futz with the source material the way he did, almost deliberately making all the characters off-kilter. And then making it a musical, to boot! And that crazy town! And the gambling house with the horse track! And that giant slide that only exists so that the tax collector can be shoved down it. And Popeye's "photo" of his Pappy. And the fact that he hates spinach.
Honestly, I couldn't say if it's a good or bad movie. It just is. It exists in its own unique little space and it content to abide by its own rules.
It would have been even weirder if they had fit in Eugene the Jeep like they wanted. But it would have cost too much, or taken too much time or whatever, so they didn’t. And as for “high as a kite”, I can’t speak for everybody, but producer Robert Evans was arrested on set for trying to buy cocaine. I see it as sort of a spin-off of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, like instead of a short before the movie its a movie before the movie IDK
It was actually Robert Evans who made the movie a musical.
You beggin' a twister punch there bro!!!!!
That's the 1980s for ya!
You're wrong.
I didn't even know that robin Williams played pop eye at all gawd I missed that...he was an awesome actor and very funny he'll always be missed especially from when he played off flubber too.
You are joking? Flubber and Popeye are the two films you think Robin Williams should be remembered for? If that's not meant in irony then there's something wrong with you.
Only Robin could pull off a live action Popeye.
That was his first movie role as well, which is pretty crazy.
I always saw this on the shelf of blockbusters when I walked past as a kid and thought it was a mediocre film until I actually watched it in my college days and really enjoyed it. Thank you Robin Williams, people like you and Jim know how cartoons work.
Before Aladdin we had Popeye as part of your childhood and Robin absolutely nails it here.
Why Robin was so Loved as a Human
Never new Robin Williams played Popeye.
Casting guy nailed it.
I wish I could have met him 😞. Popeye the movie has brought me so much joy and laughter ever since it was released.
I have a friend that met him and got to ride bikes with him and Lance Armstrong before Lance’s scandal days. Anyway, my friend said that Robin was everything you wanted him to be: kind, humble, selfless, and still funny. Hopefully that makes you feel a little bit like you’ve met him. I know it did for me. I loved hearing my friend talk about his time with Robin Williams.
R. I. P. We will miss Robin williams. I remember this movie when I was a kid. I haven't seen it in decades
Every Robin Williams move is sad to watch now
I remember seeing this at the movie theater when I was 4. It seemed strange from my 4 year old mind back then. Would be good to watch it again now and see what my 45 year old mind gathers.
Watch it again stream it
Same. Watching it on Pluto right now🥰
This remember me Robin, what a Great Genius
Love this movie takes me back to times when things were simpler
Take off the nostalgia goggles, dickhead
@@thomsboys77 He's right. They were simpler times though. And more egalitarian.
They only seemed simpler in hindsight. At the actual time, they were quite complicated enough.
@@ProjectFlashlight612 Not really. Less people bitching and moaning about non-existent problems and demanding the films they watch cater to their political nonsense and bad ideas.
I was 12
Used to love this film and the cartoons, popeye is too underated these days and Robin Williams makes it 10x better
I remember seeing parts of this on TV one night when I was about 5. Never left my mind which I think is a sign of how unique it was. One of the only TV memories I have living at that particular house, along with the original Superman cartoons on VHS.
In the international trailer of Popeye (1980), they had the combo logos in this, in the trailer had the previously lost Mickey Mouse head logo along with the Paramount Pictures logo which now is currently found as of 2022.
Robin Williams is absolutely brilliant in this
Just watched this again. Took me back to my childhood when this was my favorite movie. 🤣🤣 Very charming, irreverent, nostalgic. I love this film.
Plus a great sound track
@@bradlafferty6076 Hell yes! I’m not a big fan of musicals but the songs in this one are pretty undeniable. 🤌🏾😆
Yeah I feel like I’m 5 again when I watch this. Love this movie
@@JayFingersI always thought a rapper should sample the piano part on Bluto’s “I’m Mean” 😂
i love this robin williams movie
I loved this movie as a child.
One of the best attempted Not so serious Movies that were created by the Late Robert Altman. Great casting and memorable songs to him to.
My mom had this on DVD, I saw it for the first time when I was 6 and it scared the shit out of me. For years I thought it was some weird fever dream. Weird to know it actually exists after almost 8 years of thinking it wasn't real.
lol
Whoa i wasn't aware of this!
THEY WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER POPEYE LIKE ROBIN WILLIAMS, BEST MOVIE TO START TO FINISH
oh man one of all time favorites I am what I am
this is the only musical that i like. And the best ROBIN WILLIAMS MOVIE
james mullins Also my favorite williams movie. I guess because I was only 5 at the time and that I was a huge Popeye fan.
The best how come they never show it?🤷🏿♂️
This movie was crap from start to finish
Mike Morgan For an adult it might’ve been but not for a kid. This movie wasn’t made for adults. It’s for a young audience
Then you have to see the movie “Paint Your Wagon,” a musical feature from 1969 that has Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin each SINGING. 😂
R.I.P Robin Williams
I watches this as a kid the 1st time at the movie theater I always loved popeye cartoons so when I seen the trailer as a kid I asked my mom to take me to watch it it was awsome to go see it... I lived in NY spanish Harlem at that time... everytime it comes on I still watch it is playing on Pluto TV lol👍
Everyone is talking about this movie's brilliant casting and how great all the characters look, but is no one going to talk about the sets? 1:20 I mean just look at that!
😂 I remember Popeye movie 1980 Robin Williams very good actor he played excellent Popeye characters he was so funny a lot , the fight was funny just like the cartoon animation, the Popeye voice sound was very good the movie fun to watching + I love the cast
Flashbacks are great!
Paul Dooley (Wimpy) is 93 and still acting! (Sept/2021)
Repose en paix Robin Williams.
RIP legend robin my always fevorite hero
Hola ,soy chileno .mi héroe máximo es popeye y lo respeto desde quera niño .....hoy llegando a los 60....todavía tengo los comic .....guardados como mi tesoro máximo.....ahh....y la pelicula ....un deleite para el alma ......
Who is here after the new popeye by Conor was released ? 🤚🏽
I can’t believe he was 29 years old in this film. I was 10 yo when this movie was realised, and was really excited. Cast was spot on
40th Anniversary of Popeye 1980 (1980-2020)
I get a kick out of this every time I see it
Far as I'm concerned, Robin Williams *is* Popeye.
This gonna be hard to top. But I'm here for it.
Beautiful movie
Remember watching this movie a lot
I remember loving this movie as a child. Never knew Robin Williams played Popeye himself tho
Robin was brilliant
man..what a treat!! never knew this film existed.🙋
1:30 - Studio Exec: "Right, and this scene where Popeye punches an octopus... "
When you’re a kid you don’t really pay attention to the credits for the film but I had no idea this was a Robert Altman film till I got older
1:15 Robin Williams Was Best Known As The Voice Of Mr Genie From Disney's Aladdin In 1992 Which Is Disney's 31st Animated Motion Picture From The Disney Renaissance And It Was Alan Menken And Howard Ashman And Tim Rice's Very First Ever Disney Animated Family Musical Blockbuster Movie Of All Time. Oh Really. He Was Also Appeared In Night At The Museum And He Also Played The Voice Of The Genie From Disney's Aladdin Which Is My All Time Favourite Disney Animated Blockbuster Movie. Thanks yodaflyz Mate. X
Try looking up "Mork and Mindy"
That's were Robin got his start and what he's known for.
Imagine that the critics tried to convince everyone how this was a "bad" movie back then
were they wrong?
Classic, Robin Williams great actor 🥇
I haven't seen this movie in a long time, I'm going to watch it again soon, this came out the year i was born
It’s The First Robin Williams Movie That Started It All.
My grandparents showed me this when I was 10. Quite the movie, I'll tell ya that.
Popeye is played by The Genie from Aladdin and Olive Oyl is played by Wendy Torrance from The Shining.
Fine man. I highly respect him. I know his journey and he traveled it well
Such an underrated classic. And somehow not on disney plus.
Imagine this coming out in 2021
It would be woke and P.C
In other words it would suck.
Popeye would be a black sailor.
Lot of green screen
Best movie ever ❤
😭 this was one of the very first movie's I went to go see I want to go back to my childhood 😭
Apparently the set they made is still up, it just sits abandoned on that island they built it on, you can visit it and everything
I was 4 or 5 when my mom took us to see this, memories, rip Robin Williams
I love watching this 😁💕
From Paramount Pictures, the same company behind the original Popeye cartoons from 1933-1957, who also produced this 1980 Popeye musical feature.
Underrated as hell.
Man I was 4yrs old when this came out.
My mother and aunts took my cousins and I to see it and I remember scenes from the movie as if I was seeing them in real time 1980.
When my mother told me that “Mork” from “Mork and Mindy” was Popeye in the movie I was like 🤯🤯🤯🤯
1:38- Popeye fights a giant octopus. SOLD.
Sad what happened to these 2 big 🌟
I love that this movie was filmed in Malta. Part of my family was born there. A beautiful place to vosit
duuude how did robin williams maintain that eye thing without becoming sore?? o.O
Just realized on 20th april 2024 that this movie exists
Strangely mesmerizing
Why do ppl say this movie flopped. Ive only seen bits of it in the 80s
when i was growing up i thought popeye village in malta was where they animated popeye but it’s actually where they filmed this
Near the end of the movie, Poopdeck Pappy is holding a book and showing it to Swee'pea. What is the title of the book please? Even with my large screen TV its too blurry to read.
Where do I send the flowers🥊😃🥊
0:45 I can actually hear Robin Williams
This is before movie trailers became an art form.
My parents had this movie on VHS when I was a kid, so I watched it ALL the time as well has other VHS movies that were popeye cartoon compilations. I just finished this movie right now as an adult, and it’s so WEIRD. Popeye is looking for his dad, Olive Oyl is a finicky uptight lady set to marry Bluto, there’s a comically stereotypical Jew who lives with them, WIMPY TAKEAS A CHILD TO HORSE RACES RIGHT NEXT TO A BROTHEL AND THEN COMMITS CHILD ABDUCTION IN EXCHANGE FOR HAMBURGERS, popeye hates spinach his dads greatest treasures are mementos from when popeye was a kid. Whole thing is a fever dream but the casting is solid and it has high nostalgia value
I can't picture anyone else playing Popeye The Sailor Man other than Robin Williams
Rip Robin Williams (2014)
How have I not heard of this movie
After laughing out loud at the sight of a red masted goose boat (?) 10 minutes into live-action ONE PIECE, I recalled a movie I watched as a kid, about a sailor who's X gene is triggered every time he eats his spinach.
only this day 2024 i realize this was robin williams
R.I.P Robin Williams
(1951-2014)
🔹️ Shelley Duvall was very popular in the 70s & 80s, at the height of her career. A very attractive, alluring actress at the time these films were made. The Shining & Popeye
Why have only heard about this film just now lol
Song goes hard

I had no idea!
The comic strip brought to life. Probably this and Dick Tracy are the best. I don't understand the low ratings at IMDB. Should be at least 7.5. People can be so uptight is ridiculous.
I’m here because someone came up to me and asked me this exact question…. Do you know who you look like…. I’m like no, who do I look like and this DUDE!!! Said Robbin Williams popeye.. and I said should that be a compliment or a diss? Because I’ve NEVER seen this EVER!! Now I see why he said it. NO HOMO. Holy crap!!!
Thank you Sal Vulcano for letting me know this existed on Theo Von’s podcast.
This Movie Is Now Streaming On HBO Max (8/1/2021)
What am I? What am I? I AM WHAT I AM!!
I'M POPEYE THE SAILOR!!
