How to Rig a Popping Cork For Redfish & Trout

  • Here is a tutorial on how to rig a popping cork for redfish and trout. The popping cork is an extremely effective and simple technique to catch fish. The tools needed include a medium to light spinning rod, soft plastic lure or ½ -1/4 ounce DOA shrimp, 20-30lb fluorocarbon monofilament leader and a popping cork. I chose the Cajun Thunder cork because of durability, and construction with both plastic and brass beads. The thrashing of the cork resonates a high pitch noise that fish cannot resist. When the fish investigate the surface commotion, they are quickly greeted by the artificial lure, which entices the strike. You want to retrieve at different speeds and test different cadences for best results. Add a little touch of Gulp spray to your lure for an additional advantage. If you like this tutorial, please like, share and subscribe and I will continue making helpful videos. Thank you!

    Have been using the rig you suggest and every time we fish my son will catch a big red. We typically fish for trout, but it is
    usually his first catch in the area, boom, he is hooked up and smiling. We love it and thanks for your video.
    We like the DOA, the VUDU, 1/8 or 1/4 heads, all the colors, the GULP, just good fun. We have had flounder bites but
    seldom get them in the net.

      +iHuntxdzers Back about 5 years ago I was fishing with a good friend. He runs a 6pac day fishing boat full time. I was having a major hard time getting to the yellow tailed snapper in the coral without getting hung up. I pulled out and old bobber and put it on my line. My friend about pooped himself. He laughed and said "what? You think we are bluegill fishing?". I just kept on doing my thing and cast out a bit of cut bait. After the 5th snapper he wanted a bobber. I said sorry only one. Now people finally see the value. My wife and I joke that bobbers are for kids and popping floats are for adults.

The rig you describe is simple and I am finding it more and more. Just went to Mosquito Lagoon and didn't catch one red fish. very disappointing when you're paying for a charter....I am going to buy a small boat and hit the creeks in Jacksonville. If you have any additional information on how to fish for the Big Reds, please let me know. Again, love the clean, direct video.

    Hello Liam, I am personally not familiar with Kiawah Island. From my experience, your best bet is to talk to the locals once you arrive, keep your rigs simple and match the food source which is abundant in that area. That is pretty much the formula for success wherever you decided to venture to. Let us know how you do.

  • @Saltyscales
    @Saltyscales  Před 10 lety +2

    Hello Russel,
    I would assume you are probably fishing extremely shallow? If so, I would first try free lining live shrimp or greenbacks. Attach your leader directly to your main line and a 1/0 Owner hook. Are you sight casting? Shallow water reds can be very finicky, therefore sometimes a popping cork isn't your best option.

    Any of these type corks will work with the same principle explained here. I like DOAs, but haven't had much luck recently except with live shrimp. Had an old-timer use the same setup above (I use Cajun Thunders) with the same leader, two clear glass beads free above a 2.0 or 3.0 treble hook or circle hook. Have had good luck with the setup, but want to master the artificials so appreciate your tips Joshua.

  • @Saltyscales
    @Saltyscales  Před 10 lety

    Yes, you can use circle hooks and a variety of baits. I like using the popping cork with a 1/0 owner and greenbacks for redfish and snook. Don't be afraid to try out new techniques and baits, you never know what will produce for you.

    Thank you so much for this video. I can't wait to try this in July when I get to go back to the shore.
    I am new to fishing (have been 3x's and am addicted to salt water fishing!). I prefer to fish from shore in a salt water marsh we found while camping.
    In April, I had real shrimp on a hook and a plain jane red/white bobber on my line and had what I think redfish jumping on top of my bobber, but not hitting my bait :(
    Do redfish jump out of the water? Or was it a different kind of fish landing on my bobber, and what should I use to go after those types of fish, if that is what is in the salt marsh when I am there in July?
    I can't wait to add this to my tackle box and put it to work!
    Thanks so very much!

    Next time try and go shallower, In our area the ladyfish love to hangout in the 3-6 feet of water. As you work your way to the 2.5 - 3 foot range, look for good grass with sandy pot holes. If the water is low, you have to go out further, as it comes in, start creeping toward the mangroves.

    I'm somewhat new to the whole pop cork. Iv always preferred dragging a shrimp along the bottom and twitching it.
    A man at academy told me to try this and some mojo shrimp. I'm fairly happy with the combo. The shrimp are like swim bait there fails move as if there swimming. They also have a little class tube with mini bb's in it as a rattle. It works well. If tried the gulp in the past but they didnt work to well for me. I'll get nibbles and a hit and run all the time.
    If gotten 5+ hit and runs in a hour with gulp and ended up not catching a single one that day lol.

      +Santana Rios Cabelas is a great place also. Great shipping and great customer service. I buy from Bass pro, but prefer Cabelas 10-1. I ordered 3 green ones last night.

    Ultimate-Baits is a small local company in NC making a new amazing popping bobber. Not yet available on line. Hard plastic, I sorted weights, glass beads on line.

    I'm gonna use this tomorow but I'm using a treble hook should I add a little weight to the cork so that my line is straight in the water ?

      Reeling N' Revving you can use weight but the less hardware, the better off you will be.

    Hello 2342makaveli, you pop the cork and then let it sit a few seconds and then repeat.

    What exact brand of leader line are you using in this video?

    How deep off the cork should I be fishing?..heard about 16" is recommended but I've seen big reds swimming in ankle deep water right in front of me ...Im in southern Louisiana if that matters..

      A good rule of thumb is about two feet. Most reds that we catch here in Florida are in two to three feet of water on average.

    SS, what length of leader when fishing in shallow bays like East Matagorda? If we're in 18-24" of water, what length would you suggest?

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  Před 7 lety

      I would have about a 1.5 foot leader personally.

    I know the action may be hindered a bit but I use a clinch knot to tie on my soft plastic lure (instead of the loop knot) what’s your thoughts on this? Still effective ?
