  • r/Askreddit in today's Askreddit thread, we check out times when terrible rules at a person's school or work has backfired terribly! For example, one student threw his bully out of a school window because of his school's zero tolerance policy on violence. His perspective was, "If I'm going to get punished for defending myself, I may as well make it worth my while!" We also have stories of employees showing their bosses just how incredibly stupid the new company policies are. If you like this content, hit the subscribe button for more daily Reddit videos!

In school, around my 10-12 years old, during a PE class, the teacher was taking our BMI. So we are going two at time, stripping to underwear to be weighed (boys and girls do PE in different gymnasiums). By a bad coincidence I go at same time as a bully of mine, and I hated be underdressed (at the time I would go to beach and poll in short and tshirt), so I got anxious and my bully didn't help. On the way back he began to pester me, I don't remember what make me lash out, buy at the end I was mauling him and 7 classmates trying to hold me down (I was and still a friendly giant nerd).
We are send to the coordinator office to explain what happened, the bully got 3 days suspended and I just got a warning.

I started wearing a cycle helmet when I taught them to ride bikes and we went on bike rides together and when I went to their mother's to collect them on a weekend.
And as a smoker I couldn't say "Don't smoke, it's bad!" so I told them that starting to smoke was the stupidest mistake I'd ever made and all the reasons WHY it was such a bad idea.

I remember the silicone bracelets that said "I love boobies" that they used to sell everywhere around town for Breast Cancer Awareness. Everybody in my class had one, like they were THE thing to have in middle and elementary school. The new elementary school principal banned them for using the word "boobies" because it was "inappropriate", so anybody caught with one had their bracelet confiscated and was given detention.
Then, a high school teacher was diagnosed and they tried to change directions COMPLETELY, encouraging everybody to buy one to support her. Parents refused, citing the contradictory rules that elementary and middle school students had been subjected to for the last year.
They didn't allow their kids to wear the bracelets (to school; many still wore them outside of school) until the principals gave a formal apology about THEIR (the principals') inapporpriate behavior.

I'll give the short version and it made me uncomfortable when they gave me clothing I personally didn't wear and they didn't listen that I knew my size but insist on me trying it on. Rslash's candy story reminded me of a story of my own:
Once on a field trip my mom had packed me a small chocolate bar. The teacher confiscated it and said I wasn't allowed to have candy since it was unfair to the other kids. However, as part of the field trip we stopped to buy ice cream. We were supposed to bring money from home to do this, and there was no maximum allowed amount. So some kids had more money to spend than others, and they ended up buying ice cream AND candy. Including chocolate bars bigger than the one I had. The teacher was fine with that because "they bought it". As if I fucking stole my candy bar or something.
When were back at school after the trip I asked for my chocolate bar back. The teacher acted as if she didn't know what I was talking about and denied ever taking my chocolate. I am willing to bet money she ate it on the bus on the way to location. I have several reasons to hate that teacher, she was the legitimately an awful person. But that was one of the worst things she did. She literally stole candy from an 8 year old.
Fun fact: When she announced at the end of the school year that she was quitting (found out later that she actually got fired), I celebrated by going "Yes!". I was not as subtle as I thought I was. Everyone both heard and saw me fist pump.

There's always that one awful teacher! Way back in 8th grade, my social studies teacher needed to take a good portion of his year off (I forget why now, been too long) and so they brought in a substitute. She came in a week before he left to get to know the ins and out and meet the students and seemed nice enough.
That all ended once she was in his position. I don't think she understood all the projects that were in place and was just unrelentingly nasty about any little mistake anyone made. She wasn't afraid to point this out in the front of the class either. I'm not going to say I was a good student by any means at this time (I was something of a class clown and waaay to good for homework!) so I seemed to be a frequent target of some of this ire.
By the time she departed, she had become the most unliked person in the school. Even the actual faculty didn't get along with her. This many years later I've forgotten why.

The thing about this is there was one kid that couldn't eat gluten. So, whenever I brought cupcakes and cookies in, this kid had to sit out and eat some fruit snacks. I first felt bad for the kid, but I didn't question it.
A few weeks later, I noticed he never genuinely smiled. I talked to the kid, and it turned out he wasn't even allergic to any food, his mother just had too much control over his diet. He didn't even have any sweets/candy before. I then went to great efforts to get him something nice whenever we had a celebration. I always snuck an extra cupcake for him from then on until I had to move away. I really hope it's gotten better for him these days.

Some days they were off by $20 or more because sometimes a cashier just decided to unroll every single coin roll in the till (which we do count those, just not the loose coin). The cash got more and more messed up, and instead of fixing the OBVIOUS PROBLEM, they just kept revising the accounting procedures we had to follow, then got sooooo surprised when the cash was even more messed up. It continued like that for years even up until I left the company. I have no idea if they still do that or not.

    Plot twist:
I'm still short now, Jesus Christ not everyone gets a happy ending. Not dramatically short short, just...kinda short. 2nd shortest kid in my class, thats all. I'm in Secondary school.

Some teachers used to get huffy about students having to wear ties as they made everyone look 'presentable', but in 5th and 6th year we had to wear fancy tartan ties. These ties were expensive as far as high school ties go and some people were getting chewed out daily for their ties even though they couldn't do anything about it.
I learned how to tie a normal tie into a bowtie, pissed the teachers off to no end but I was following the rules and wearing a tie. At one point a teacher stopped me in the hall and was lecturing me on how I 'didn't tie it correctly', this was when 3 students with fist knots in their ties walked past. She decided it wasn't a fight that was worthwhile

I have entitled parent/entitled kid story:
so this must of taken place about early 2015 all the way to late to 2016. I was at school at the time and I had this friend. maybe friend isn't the correct word because even though I tried to get along with him he was such an entitled brat. basically his dad owned a carpentry compony and was making good money and driving a BMW convertible and this made the kid so entitled. here's one of the many things he would do, anytime someone would buy something he would get his dad to buy him the same thing plus loads of extra stuff to go with it to show wealth. one of the things I remember was one kid purchased a lego set so this entitled kid went and got his dad to buy him every lego set in that specific collection to flex at this other kid.
basically one day this entitled kid was doing his usual habit of acting better than everyone so one of my friends called him out and said to him "stop acting like your something special as you're not. you are the worst on the football team and have literally no talent in anything so all you do is brag about your dads accomplishment's" this entitled kid was pissed and started saying how he was gonna be the most successful because his dad will employ him. that's when I said " you're such an idiot that no one else will employ you so your only chance of getting a job in life is to work for your dad" that shut him up but you could tell by the look on his face that it wasn't over.
basically he must of said something to his dad and his dad complained to the school demanding that I'm kept separate to his son at all time as he doesn't want someone like me near his son. i didn't care but i guess entitled kid was still complaining to his dad because the entitled kid was coming up to me in school saying that his dad said I would fail in life and one day they'll see me sleeping on the streets. so of course i fired back and said "well tell your dad his compony is trash and i know people that hired him and complained about how bad of a job the workers did" which by the way is true.
basically this happened several times, entitled kid would say what his dad said about me and I would fire back. eventually the dad actually phones me up threatening to sue me, keep in mind at the time i was a school kid about 15 years old and have a 40 year old guy shouting at me down the phone so I'm basically like "yeah whatever" and put the phone down. i haven't really heard from them in years now and entitled kid would be about 20 years old now but i recently got some new info.
entitled kid recently fell out with his dad over something relating to the carpentry compony so his dad kicked him out of the house so now he's homeless living in someone's shed. lol don't you just love karma.

I have a teacher food story about sharing. We once had a substitite lady who was absolutely adament about no snacks aloud unless you have enough for everyone. Most of us just saved our snacks for lunch, but there was one girl who had to have her snack. So while she was eating, the teacher goes to call her out. Teach goes: "I see youre eating. Do you have enough for everyone?"
    Kid: "Uh. No..."
Teach: "Well why are you eating in my class then?"
    Kid: "I'm diabetic"
    Dead silence.

I work in a warehouse where we lift all day every day. Recently, they implemented a team lift rule where if you don't feel comfortable with the weight or size of a box, you ask a coworker to help you. Great idea, but in practice is a complete joke. When you ask someone to team lift with you it is essentially halfing the work of the employees involved, and the boss is mad every time and can do nothing about it, because we are following safety rules.

My high school had a zero tolerance policy against violence. A bully decided to go after me for some reason. I already had to deal with bullying all through elementary and middle school so I took the time to learn how to fight. As soon as the bully touched me, I laid him out flat. Principal was going to expel me, I told the principal then the bully should get the same since they started the fight, and I had plenty of witnesses to vouch for me and I will get a lawyer to pursue this legally if they do expel me. Principal tried to call my bluff, but I was not bluffing. I told the principal there will be hell to pay as my sister was the most popular girl in the school and had a lot of friends. "Expel me and everyone will know that the school will only punish the victim just because they defended themselves." First time I ever seen a person go pale. Bully was suspended for a week, I got off scot free. Zero tolerance policy was revoked within a week.

At my first full time job we got a new boss who instituted a new vacation policy, not in line with the actual companies. His rule(s) were only one person at a time could be off, no carry over, and if two people wanted the same day off the one with the most seniority would prevail. What we did was to add up everyone's vacation and then found out that for this to come close to working someone would have to be off everyday of the year. And then the 4 least senior people, I was one of them, could never take a day of vacation. All 20 of us walked up to his desk, as he was sitting there looking down at his desk. Someone called out his name and when he looked up his entire department was standing there, not happy. We pointed out that first off his rules violated company rules, second someone would have to be off at all times, and lastly four of us could never take any vacation days. We then asked if he wanted to rescind the rule(s) now, or should we all walk down to HR. He quickly rescinded his absolutely stupid rule and never made another one like it.

After that, the school completely banned snowballs. Not just throwing them, but also making snowballs. If they ever caught snowballs we'd have to go to the principal's office and possibly get a suspension.
I can understand the concern they had, but banning them?
