    Beautiful model. While it maybe not on any of the company’s I model and it’s out of period, it’s very smart and the LNER green is very sharp. Not seen a review video elsewhere on CZcams on this class of locomotive so I really enjoyed this. All the best, Clint

    These are quite cheap to buy but they are heavy and run really well. I have an LNER black one, which is probably more prototypical (only two K3s were ever painted apple green, and not for long at all). My only minor quibble is that the tender can be fiddly to hook up.

    • @rowejon
      @rowejon Před 7 měsíci

      I've just bought one second hand & coupling up the tender is indeed a pain in the posterior.

  • @TrainFan_95
    @TrainFan_95 Před 5 lety +1

    The K3 is actually a (relatively) new tooling, being from around 2005. This is after Bachmann abandoned the split chassis mechanisms and so this model never had to be redesigned with a new chassis.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 5 lety +1

      Yeah that's what I found too - not as old as you'd think! It's definitely much better for not being a split-chassis engine!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

  • @paulcaswell2813
    @paulcaswell2813 Před 4 měsíci

    Interesting choice of era - 1946-47 only (the cabside number reflects Thompson's 1946 renumbering scheme). And out of 200-odd K3s, No1935 was the only one to wear full LNER Apple Green at any time, although the earliest members of the class did wear full GN livery prior to the Grouping.

  • @ericholmes8665
    @ericholmes8665 Před 2 lety

    The model you have is the reworked model 8 pin DCC,odd that its in the old style box the other two which came out at the time are in the new style box,the first 10 introduced on the GNR had the GN cab as well has the enormous, for the time of the 6 foot dia boiler,the class was adopted has a LNER standard class they were very powerful,but also very rough riding locos,until the V2 was introduced they were first choice for express freight work,always in a black livery,except for the one you have reviewed,which got the full green LNER livery , applied just before nationlisation,the big let down are the undersized driving wheels,but it is an old model,but it does capture the chunky looks of the original,and it is a very good runner.

  • @jamestalbot4900
    @jamestalbot4900 Před 5 lety +1

    Hi Sam,
    The K3 fell into the early 2000s era of new models which lacked some finer detail. It was never produced earlier as a split chassis a la the V2 and B1.
    It looks odd because of the massive boiler on an otherwise small loco. Definitely on my list to get.

    I’m going to buy one of these for 66 pounds in a few days. Albeit it being a BR K3 (No.61932 to be exact). She will look good with my LNER W1 Fleet and my LMS Coronation Class Streamlined Pacific Fleet.

  • @FlyingScott
    @FlyingScott Před 5 lety

    Well, the K3s were known for being enormous machines back in the day, and in BR days they were seen as baby V2s, and they were given the same freight rating: 6F. However, due to their weight, they were often seen on duties you could see a V2 doing, including express passenger trains, although I doubt it would have been over too long of a distance with them there tiny wheels!

    tbh if a loco doesn’t have any tender pickups, that’s not really a problem. That means, the loco itself already have relatively good pickups excluding the tender. Most loco have tender pickups because that’s where the speaker for the DCC sound.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 5 lety

      Hmmm, it doesn't necessarily mean that the loco already has relatively good pickups - they're often no better than others with tender pickups! In general - you can never have too many pickups, so I'll always complain if expensive models don't have tender ones!

    Definitely a pretty good value for this thing - Just enough detail to look the part.
    I can't remember which K-series it was, but apparently early crews called these moguls "Ragtimers", since they weren't used to seeing goods locos with fully exposed motion like that.

    that is a very nice model indeed, love the less coal might be it was running in the 60's and that's all it was allowed? not often you see an tender that empty of coal thought for a moment someone before you had ripped the coal out as it was either highly detailed or just needed an engine with small coal in it for something else, for the prce its a big high but in that colour i can see why

  • @DC4260Productions
    @DC4260Productions Před 5 lety

    I must admit I'm a bit confused on what to think about this engine. Since I've had two LNER green engines for at least two years (an A1 class 4-6-2 and a B17 class 4-6-0), I can't help thinking that the K3 is a very odd-looking locomotive, mainly due to the boiler, which I feel looks far too big for a 2-6-0. Why Gresley designed them that way is anyone's guess. I'm somewhat tempted to get the BR Black version, because I think the 98 pounds Hattons are selling them for is a reasonable price, and I think she would look nice alongside my Hornby K1. But my thoughts on the K3's appearance still stands. On a sidenote, I remember seeing this exact same LNER K3 at a model railway exhibition, which was in January 2018.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 5 lety

    I've never heard of a K3 LNER 2-6-0 Mogul engine. I'm more familiar with the only preserved K4 2-6-0 Mogul, named The Great Marquess. And by the way, you had that B1 2-6-0 Mogul hauling six grey open wagons and a grey NE Guard's Van. Swap the B1 for the grey P Class 0-6-0 Tank Engine, and you could have a Ghost Train Running Session with your loft in complete darkness.
    "And every year, on the date of the accident, it runs again as a warning to others. It goes along shrieking like a lost soul."
    "Percy, what are you talking about?"
    "The Ghost Train. Sam saw it last night."
    One darkened loft day, Sam was playing with the grey P Class 0-6-0 Tank Engine coupled up to six grey open wagons and a grey NE Guard's Van. Somehow, steam appeared at floor level causing a shiver of fright to chase itself down Sam's spine. Sam realised he had created a Ghost Train unintentionally. The grey tank engine and her ghostly goods train ran round the layout about six times, before taking a break just peeking out from under the bookcase. Sam shivered with true fear. His model track was shrouded in the steam-like fog or mist, whichever you prefer.
    "Brrr!" stuttered Sam feeling a chill come over him. "Talk about creepy."
    "Peeeeeep!" whistled the tank engine like magic. The eerie sound made Sam jump half a mile.
    "YIKES!" he shrieked, frightened out of his wits. "How did that happen?" He watched the little grey steamy move forwards by herself, hauling the ghostly goods train through the mist. The familiar look of wide-eyed horror was stuck on his white face. OK, he loved his running sessions, make no mistake. Yet, this was the scariest one he'd ever created so far. The little 0-6-0 whistled once more and made Sam open his mouth....
    "AAH!" A terrified scream erupted from his throat. This was most certainly not a nightmare. It was real. Bother.
    The tank engine and ghostly goods train came to a halt, in Sam's full view. Sam fainted with fright and then recovered. He switched the lights on and the steam-like mist disappeared. Day turned to night, Sam retired to bed. An eerie whistle echoed around him and he woke with a start. Staring him in the face was the little grey tank engine, as she stood on his blanket. She vanished into the loft to rest upon the shelf, beside Phantom Manor. Owning one ghostly grey engine was scary enough, but owning two? That was even worse. The Phantom of the Railway was there, inside Sam's mind. Spooky.

      Hey, there may be sellers (such as Peter's Spares) that sell replacements. Other than that, it might be difficult, since they don't make them like that any more. Your best bet may be to try and find a donor loco going cheap for spares - let me know how you get on!

    Good review Sam, hope that stalling was nothing serious.
    I do like the those K3's, in my opinion Gresleys best design. They were very versitile and could handle heavy expresses and heavy goods trains with equal ease and were more popluar with the traffic department than the bigger and more famous B17's. Perhaps their finest hour came in the late 1920's and early 1930's after gresleys disasterous P1 2-8-2 heavy good locos were deamed a failure and development of the class cancelled. In order to speed up timings of London bound heavy goods trains K3s were employed, the trains shortend, but timed for much higher speeds. A role they performed very very well.
    It's a shame non have survived, and even more baffling that when several groups are new building 'failed' (or at the very best 'suspect)' gresley designs like the P2 and V4 locos, a new build of a K3, a design that could serve very well on both Heritage lines and as a mainline tour locomotive hasn't even considered!!
    Anyway have a great week
