    I’ll be honest. When you live in a place like California, where it is not uncommon to see gas nearing $7 to $8 Per gallon during Summer and fall months, even the inflated electricity we pay, it still saves driving this thing. I do have one, but also have a Duramax Diesel 3.0, which is excellent on fuel. But for distances with 100-150 miles, the Lightning can be a great option.

    At least the Ford dealerships are consistent... I took my 2015 F-250 in for its oil change and tire rotation. When I got home, just for giggles, I put my torque wrench on a wheel and all the lug nuts were torqued to 80 ft-lbs. Spec is 160 ft-lbs for my vehicle. When I brought this to the service manager's attention, I got no apology, only the explanation that they must have used an F-150 torque tube instead of the F-250 one. He said if I brought it in he'd be glad to re-torque all the lug nuts. Duh???? Why would I do that if I'm checking my vehicle with my own torque wrench? I've never been back.

    So I see this truck is registered in Pennsylvania with two inspection stickers. One is for the inspection and the other, being an electric vehicle, is an "emissions exempt" sticker, for which the driver had to pay $19 to get. There is a paradigm shift one needs to wrap one's head around on this. You, if like us, and you have the room, CAN HAVE A GAS STATION IN YOUR BACKYARD! Six months after we got ours, we installed an offgrid 3.6kw solar array with 10kW of batteries, with a 48v 6kW hybrid inverter/charger, which we use to charge the Lightning through the Charge Station Pro. That, after rebates, will have cost around $4k. We also installed a 12k Btu Mini-split in the garage two weekends ago, that also runs off the 3.6kW of Solar. What we didn't expect was, when we run the mini-split, which is pretty much all the time, and open the door to the garage to the house, it cuts our House electric use by around 20kW per day in May so far...helping out the house AC. Long story short, I get 400 sq/ft of man cave that is cooled, AND, the mini-split is likely going to cut our electric bill by $500/yr. All told, this system will likely pay for itself in 3-4 years, and then we'll be getting essentially free fuel, and be paying $13 electric bills for the next 20 years, until the panels and batteries may be down to 80% efficiency. Obviously, you need the room in your backyard to install 10 x 360 watt panels, and the $5500 upfront cost on the solar array/batteries. Per the Towing, you'd have to define "you can't tow" We have an autocross course we run 65miles away, and the lightning can tow a 3000lb car on a 2500lb trailer round trip without an additional charge, so works for my towing use case. We've had the Lighting for a year and half, put 10k miles on it, and haven't ever used a fast charger where we have to pay.

    • @usa-ev
      @usa-ev Před 5 měsíci

      Environmentally speaking it doesn't matter how long you personally own an EV because it will still be on the road with the next owner.
      EVs "pay off" the higher carbon production cost of the battery, ICEVs never do, the more ICEVs are driven the worse they are for the environment. Environmentally speaking the best thing to do for an ICEV is to crush it and recycle it into an EV. Of course that's not the best thing for the owner economically.
      Battery disposal is not an issue, batteries are first repurposed for stationary storage, and ultimately recycled at the end of their second life. Battery recycling companies are able to recycle >90% of a battery. So everything that is being mined (once) can be used again and again in future generations of batteries. Thus the environmental cost of these future generations of batteries is also much much less.

      And if you own a house and don't have a garage, often a 220VAC 50amp pigtail out in the open lawn or driveway violated city or county electrical codes.
      My daughter lived in a quaint turn of the century traditional village with few garages. However they are wealthy, trendy yuppies...so they buy EVs. I have seen orange extention cords or romex staked with wire stakes out the side windows and onto the driveway or parking pad...with a charger cobbled onto a wooden post. Sometimes a quick trench to bury it raw. Also just loose extentions strewn out.
      I also see the city utility meter readers and electrical inspector red tagging the plug and taping citations to the front door.

    If you live in a city and do a lot of stop and go I don't see a problem. Charge it at the house is a must. Few things to consider though: you won't be traveling far, especially in the winter so be advised. The battery has a limited life span and will need to be rebuilt or replaced. The harder you drive it and the more the abs, stereo, heat, ac ect are used the less range you have- everything runs off of electricity so when it's cold outside and raining the car has to use more juice, which is less range.

      People forget that there are massive improvements to cars over time. Besides better fuel economy, there are massive structural and safety upgrades making the car far safer in a crash.

      Don't need to pay $10,000 for a bigger battery since the standard battery has plenty of range for our work. Charge it at night. Never a problem. Great fleet solution. I added a 240V circuit since this isn't our first EV rodeo...
      We bought the 240V option as a silent generator for when the power goes out. We set up a generator transfer switch and added another 240V circuit that will feed power from the truck to the main panel in a blackout. The frunk is great additional locked, waterproof storage. No need for tonneau cover or WeatherGuard box taking up bed space.

To and from work, to and from the grocery store, etc. For people who spend the vast majority of their time only driving 30 miles or less per day, and electric vehicle is a great option. Have a gas vehicle or a hybrid if you wanna make long trips, or to tow. I'm sure that if someone who owns this truck was towing short distances, it'd be fine. Certainly not for trips while towing. Where I live in Southern Texas, a looooooot of people have the latest & greatest brand new GMC, Chevy & Ford pickups that are often fully loaded and whatnot, and they're never used for truck stuff, just glorified big sedans that get horrendously worse gas mileage. In that scenario if they've got 50-100k to drop on a truck like that and never use it as a truck, then dare I say the lightning is not a bad choice. The only trucks here that are actually used as trucks are the 90s-00s rangers, 90s-00s GMC & Chevy Trucks, and Tacoma's & Tundras of that same year range. which is pretty funny to me honestly

    It seems like a good choice for a soccer mom who needs to stop at Ikea twice yearly.
    I don't understand why the drive from Pennsylvania to Rhode Island took so much longer than a gasoline vehicle would need. Pittsburgh to Providence is 550 miles. If he started with 210 miles of range, he would probably need to stop twice, adding 340 miles. Motor Trend says 1.93 mpkWh. Thus 176 kWh. At 120 kW, this is 90-minutes. Lightning will charge faster, but tapers to 120 @ 80%.
