    For the record, I meant to say Fleer Showcase at 9:38 I had Contours on my list ahead of Showcase and thus said the wrong name.

      Its bad if its $120 when it came out but its a fun hobby break for $60 if you can find it for that price.

      Contours is the Upper Deck equivalent to Panini's Crown Royale. Its only bad if you dont get the cards you want. They have the similar designs with parallels, die cuts, patches, autos and jerseys......the thing about Contours is the chances of getting a decent rookie is lower as the rookies from the year with the exception of McDavid didnt get cards released until later on in the season.
      With most things you have to know what youre buying and what the roduct offers.Lots of sites out there can tell you the complete checklists and what players are expected to be pulled

    CONTINUED 2
    -UD Full Force - The Hobby box is great for a $35 product. The 2015-16 edition appears to be a one-off. Autos are one every two boxes. A chance to hit a Max Domi, Eichel, Larkin or McDavid RC in all kinds of variations. Look for thick acetate inserts that are numbered, or a “goooal” die-cut auto. They do have very rare Gretzky autos.
    -AHL - For $15 you can collect a lot of the base set (or if it’s 2013-14 you get the whole set). It almost always guarantees 3 to 5 autos. But the autos are AHLers. Usually you do get at least one player who is NHL worthy like Tristan Jarry or Hunter Shinkaruk. They also have sickers, logos and mascots. Still, 5 autos for $15 for 2015-16 AHLers!
    -Canada Juniors - Great product. You can hit two autos pretty easily, including at least one auto patch. And you can get two more jersey cards, plus loads or parallels, and maybe a retro card. Great for girls, as there are loads of women’s hockey hits. Buy it for $50. You do get quasi rookie cards, if you hit a 2016-17 Barzal or a 2015-16 McDavid or Fucale.
    -The Cup - It’s for Wall Street bankers. No one should spend $600 on a box of cards. For $600 simply buy a graded low end Bobby Orr RC or a mid-end Jacques Plante RC, or a lot of 1933 OPC cards including a Howie Morenz.
    -Leaf - Sometimes they (ITG/Leaf) own the rights to a cherished rookie, and not UD. In this case you might want to break the bank for a Leaf product. Usually starts at $120 and up for only five cards. They are relics and auto relics. They can be gaudy/ugly. Definitely watch breaks before buying. It’s an all or nothing product. And the design is a bit much. But you do land, say, a Bobby Clarke / Bernie Parent / Bill Barber / Phil Esposito / Bobby Orr / Johnny Bucyk relic.
    -UD Premier - If you have $275 to throw away, go for it. You get 7 cards per pack, at 1 pack per box. It’s 1 Rookie Autograph Patch, 4 Additional Autographs / Relics, and 2 Base Cards. Really clean, beautiful cards. But it’s all about being in the right tax bracket. The cards are hot. No argument there.
    -Panini Rookie Anthology - Sort of a composite product, pulling RCs from various other products. For $40-$50 the box might be worth it to target a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins RC, or a six-way jersey. You get 1 Numbered Rookie Treasures Autographed Dual-Memorabilia Rookie Card, 1 Autograph Card, 2 Memorabilia Cards, and a total of 50 Total Cards. Typically a fun break, with at least one really compelling card.
    -ITG Final Vault - A rehash product of old ITG BAP and BTP cards that they restamp 1/1 etc. At $50-$60 you can’t go wrong. Worth the fun of hitting a Mario jersey card, a cheap BAP Tony Amonte auto or a goalie mask card. You get 4 Autographs, 5 Memorabilia Cards, 1 Mask Card (Stamped), 10 Total Cards eseentially all hit.
    -Panini Anthology: This product is also all hits for $60. It’s not really worth it though, if you hit a Mark Visentin and not a Kelly Hrudey. The cards are thick and interesting, but they are cheaper on eBay. First watch a few breaks on CZcams. 2 Autograph Cards, 4 Memorabilia Cards, 2 Other Hits and 6 Total Cards.
    -1990s hobby boxes for $20. Just remember those are mostly for set builders, and the cards were mass produced. They do have insert subsets worth collecting. Worth buying just to dabble into the history of the game. Entire sets from this era are available on eBay for the same price as the hobby box.
    -Maple Leafs Centennial, Habs Centennial, President’s Choice, etc. The Habs Centennial set is very clean, and the autos have retained their value. Very nice set to build. The reprise for the Leafs was very hit and miss, as the cards essentially looked like MVP, which is not a compliment. Look for the autos on eBay rather than buy the tins. The hobby box prices have come down, which is no surprise to me. The President’s Choice blue and white, and bleu blanc et rouge are awesome. The Habs though is only $170. The Leafs one is like $350. Not sure what is in the water in Toronto, but people overpay.
    -Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire etc. Not my thing. The cards and subsets may be attractive. But the issue is they are mass produced. So if you like them, just buy the set on eBay. Cards that are in a donut shop that is on every block in the country probably have no value. Good for kids though, which really is the entire point of the hobby.
    -SP Game Used. I almost forgot, because I hate the product. Mind you some people love it. But, I'm tired of products that only focus on superstars. I played hockey growing up, and I believe it is a team sport. But, grown-up collectors seem to love Game Used, because they can collect the signed letters of a superstars name. For $120-$150 you get 6 cards per pack, 1 packs per box. You get 1 Autograph or Premium Memorabilia Card, 3 Additional Autograph or Relic Cards and 2 Base Cards / Authentic Rookies. It's an overhyped product that people with shallower pockets might find disappointing, especially if you only hit no-name rookies. Definitely watch breaks on CZcams, and monitor card prices on eBay before falling for this one. Be aware of your card odds before dropping $140 on six cards you can buy on eBay for $30 total.

    can't wait for episode 2 well done man.

  • @Fultoncards
    @Fultoncards Před 5 lety +12

    I'll make a video. But here’s a review, with products in USD. Note that I focus mostly on hobby. Be careful when buying retail and blasters because the hit odds can drop significantly. Watch breaks on CZcams before buying.
    -Upper Deck Series 1 and 2 - Hobby boxes are too expensive at $75+, because it is mostly base. $45 retail boxes are worth it. Odds of hitting the YG you want is only 12%. Series 2 has second tier YG but is a better product because of the OPC Marquee Rookie inserts. Older years have MVP and Victory update inserts. Blaster boxes only have two YGs. I do recommend the tins, which fall to a $25 price point, and the tin itself is nice, as well as the oversized card they include.
    -O-Pee-Chee Platinum - Great product at $75. OPC has loads of dynamic parallels and inserts. Usually you are guaranteed an auto. The blasters (lower hit odds, probably no auto) are very affordable and really deliver on the rookie card front.
    -O-Pee-Chee and O-Pee-Chee Update - OPC is bar none the best entry level product. Great retro cards mimicking vintage cards. has minis and playing cards, or other goodies. Base set can run 800 cards with updates. Loaded with rookies, legends, and record holders, including metallic parallels. Rare case autos make the product that much better. Look for updated rookies in UD Series 2. Note sometimes the hobby box dips to $40. And that is because the best rookies usually are in the update set, not the initial hobby box.
    -Fat packs (in general) - UD Series 1 and 2 are pretty much all base, except for a single insert. They are overpriced at $5. OPC fat packs are a bit better.
    -MVP - First product of the year. Hobby box prices can come down to $25-$35 dollars. Rare redemptions of #1 draft picks or divisional draft picks. Tons of fun to open. Durable cards for kids. Has nice die cuts, facsimile autos, player ID cards, and other goodies. Actual autos are very rare, but do exist. Retail boxes are very worth it, as they provide a lot of packs for the $15 price point. Some cool dual or quad jersey cards on occasion.
    -Artifacts - On average, stay away. Retail is essentially all base. Hobby boxes are a bit better with some dual jersey relic cards, etc. But, you are better off buying the “Autofacts” and “Tundra Tandems” on eBay.
    -Parkhurst - A retail box of 2016-17 can be bought for $15. Tons of rookies, so it is easy to hit a Laine or Matthews. Parkhurst is probably the easiest way to get a $5 RC. And there are some interesting chase inserts, centred around captains, etc. If you are entering the hobby, buy with confidence. Cheap and fun. Consider buying a set or lot on eBay of old Parkhurst from the 1950s!
    -Score - You can get a retail box for under $10. It’s the lowest end product of the hobby, from Panini. There are some high gloss cards and gold parallels. On occasion they throw in a sticker auto, which is fun. But it’s basically all papery base.
    -Donruss/Pinnacle - These used to be fun, albeit a similar to Score. They have chase case autos, and “City Lights” or “Game Night” jersey cards. I once hit a Beliveau on-card auto #/50. So the old boxes do have some unbelievable surprises.
    -Be A Player - This is an ITG product. The old Be a Player is known for having an auto in every pack or every other pack in the late 1990s and 2000s. They are low end on-card autos, but very fun to collect the auto sets. There are also gold parallel autos., as well as short print autos. The easiest way to buy, say, a Marc-Andre Fleury, Vinny Lecavalier or Vincent Damphousse auto.
    -Between the Pipes - Also ITG. One of the most fun products in the hobby. It’s only goaltenders. You typically are guaranteed two autos, and a jersey. Subsets focus on immortals, legends, future, and present goalies. You can theoretically his a glove relic of a Terry Sawchuk if luck smiles on you. But you can more easily get a Carey Price Corey Crawford dual. This said, you might also hit an AHL goalie who never makes it. Or, again, you could hit a Gerry Cheevers Bruins legend, like I did.

    As someone who has been collecting for a long time, sets with hard signed autos are a lot more desirable like SP Authentic. Sticker auto sometimes can be cut off or missing part of their signature, and tend to be smaller. I'm saying purely as a $ and future value. Sticker auto sets rarely go go top dollar, compare a SPX and SPA rookie auto and you'll see what I mean. Try to avoid busting too many random different products, stick to a couple per NHL season. I regret now going through boxes and boxes or binders of random different sets, when I could have kept my older collection more focused. I grew up in the 90's by the way during the big hockey card boom. I also like to collect a product with more rookies as that tends to be something across all sports that is heavily collected and will keep high value. Sell high when the player is at his peak if you can part with the card. Something like my Rick Nash young guns could have fetched me almost $300 in 2003 now might only get me $15. Buy low too, I bought kucherov young guns 3 years ago, same as Barzal heavily last year, and I picked up a Carter Hart Team Canada Auto jersey this year. Those are the type of moves that will reward you in the long run if you're looking to make $. But to be honest this is a pretty hard hobby to do so in. I only really started narrowing down what I wanted to collect in the past 5 years, instead of just spending money busting random packs and boxes, and I wish I started using eBay sooner lol. Hope my advice helps to whomever is reading this, have fun, cheers!

    • @Fultoncards
      @Fultoncards Před 5 lety

      I think a lot of people agree. But, I personally don't see what is so special about hard-card signed. The fact is SP Authentic always has the same look, year-on-year. At least with SPx, the cards are very varied, and they include retros and shadow boxes. And SPx cards are numbered to /50 /99 /125 etc. Future Watches are /999. Both Future Watch and Young Guns are so overhyped, given how basic they look and common they are. And for some of us, it isn't all about value. Also, if prices don't rise too much, it means they can actually be bought. It really depends on how you approach the hobby.

    Upper Deck is not good to its customers as it gives out little in its retail products or hobby products, you have to be rather lucky to get anything decent as they love to put out a short amount of the more desired cards. Then again if you fork out the big money and get something like Upper Deck's "The Cup|" series, then yeah youll get something of great value but what they dish out is still not worth the asking price.
    I would personally get anything distributed by Panini but getting stuff from them would be rather hard as they lost the licensing contract with the NHL years ago, youd either have to go online or be lucky to find something lying about somewhere , still, they had a far superior product when it came to cards.

    Worse I've seen so far, in the past few years, was 2014/15 Upper Deck MVP! Lots of the cards are way off centre, as the bottom of one card, is seen on the other card! Bought a case because it was a great price, now I know why, as I had to go through a lot of boxes to make a decent enough set! Lots of it ended up in the recycle box, should sue Upper Deck for highway robbery after that one!

      @djrant8992 Před 6 lety

      O pee Chee is as basic as you can get for cards. It is now as it was years ago. buy packs or boxes to make a set or just get the cards of the players you want. The one thing O Pee Chee has done lately that tries to make it more appealing is they throw in special cards such as an autograph or a different designed card of a player but truthfully its not worth getting these special cards because O Pee Chee is mass produced and avaialble just about anywhere unlike other cards.

    Leafs centennial is a valuable product only if you buy hobby boxes :/ Toronto is the biggest hockey market, so it's easy to sell your stuff if you don't like it. But if you're like me, you buy this product because you want to build the set (1-200) + (1-100) diecut. I like the stories about the teams and i'll probably get the set of the six original teams :)

      Solution is just the base Upper Deck set for rookies, canvas parallels, and the occasional auto or jersey. If you like building sets, O-Pee-Chee. Huge set with players who wouldn't usually get a hockey card. Also try SP for higher-quality cards and more valuable autos and jerseys.
