What Happened To Lisa Stansfield? | Why She Hated Being Referred To As a Blue-Eyed Soul Singer

- British singer, songwriter and actress Lisa Jane Stansfield was born in Manchester, England, the middle child of 3 girls, on April 11, 1966. She grew up listening to a lot of Motown artists like Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye. Lisa says she first discovered her own voice at the age of four singing along to the records her mother played. In 1980, she won Manchester Evening News' Search for a Star singing competition and, shortly after, released her first single, "Your Alibis". Subsequently, she signed to Polydor Records and cranked out a handful of singles, that went nowhere, between 1982 and 1983. Also, around this time, she made her first TV appearance on a talent show airing on Granada TV. She came out the winner of the competition singing The Human League song “The Things That Dreams Are Made Of”. The following year, the producer of that talent show also produced a documentary for the channel titled Born in the Sixties: Lisa Stansfield. It chronicled the life of the aspiring singer and included her comments, those of her mother and sisters and some songs sung by Lisa. Also in 1983, Lisa co-hosted the children’s TV music show Razzamatazz, appeared in the children’s TV series “The Krankies Klub” and sang radio jingles for local Manchester companies. In 1986, Lisa together with schoolmates Andy Morris and Ian Devaney formed the band, Blue Zone. They wrote some songs, produced a demo, and took it around to record labels. Eventually, they signed with a small indie label that was later bought by Arista Records. They released several songs in the UK that didn’t get much attention. The group would finally experience their biggest success when their cover of the Elisa Fiorillo song "Jackie" was issued as a single outside the UK and made it onto the Dance and Pop charts in the U.S. A few months later, their debut album titled Big Thing was released. The next year, 21-year-old Lisa got married to Italian designer Augusto Grassi. After a luxurious ceremony, the couple moved to a hilltop town just outside of Rome. Alas, their union wouldn’t last long, dissolving just four months later. Lisa then came back to England. In early 1989, she would get her big break when she co-wrote and provided guest vocals for the tracks "People Hold On" and "My Telephone" that appear on the debut album of British electronic duo Coldcut. Originally, Andy and Ian were recruited for a session and Lisa had just tagged along for fun. The former song ended up reaching number six on the Dance chart in the U.S. and number eleven in the UK. On the strength of the hit and all the attention Lisa was now receiving, Arista signed her to a solo deal.

Her performance at the Apollo still lives in my head. Such a talented woman.
were u there?
Yes I saw that footage! 💯🔥💙🎶
@@renneedwards9826 go Lisa! Go Lisa!
@@ceeceetracey9839 I saw her when the Apollo was on TV
was she ever on Soul Train?
It amazes me how British accents disappear when they sing.
Many people think they do it intentionally but the accent naturally goes away because of the way you have to sustain syllables and control your vocal chords when singing. It takes more effort to maintain the accent while singing. It's pretty interesting.
Yup.....I noticed that too!!😊❤❤❤
YES! Even a lot of actors and actresses are British with British accents, and I didn't know it until they did interviews😂👍
@visionop8 very Slightly I can hear some accents sometimes but yes when they talk I'm like what 😳
@@catherineharris4746 yeah they get trained to talk like us 🫢
She has such a soulful voice....All Woman is still a favorite of mine💖💕
Mine too.
Her voice on that song had so much depth
I applaud her for not wanting to change who she was as an artist to fit into something that was not her. You go Lisa! Her first two albums were pure joy to me.
facts
My mom loved her song "All Woman" when I was young buck. I'm 40 now and can appreciate the jewels that Ms. Lisa was dropping in those lyrics🥰
Yes! I love it too!
I love it too!
Some of those Brits still keep their accents. The Beatles definitely still sounded British
Gotta love her cover of Barry White's Never Never Gonna Give You Up
Absolutely!!
I remember the video. She was walking down the street naked.
@@tami8458 If not for the cover being so awesome, that's all I would remember! LOL
Been Around The World is a STAPLE for 90s music. the violins are magical. my mom played it all the time ❤
that's actually 70s music

I do also, faraday favorite of all times.
You know your a big deal for African American fans when you're totally embraced when performing on the series Showtime At The Apollo.
Yesss! The crowd was on their feet the whole time.

@@Blessed-tn1wd I loved when that happened for non blacks. The Apollo had high standards and I agreed with most decisions there.
She don't care about black people having love for her all she care about is getting signed to a major record company and if she has to use blacks to do it then so be it
My Mom told me the story about how my uncle played her song “been around the world” everyday on cassette tape. One day he came home, went to play it and his sister stole it. He called her up and said “don’t do that sh** no more” 🤣😩
Haha. Such a beautiful song. Women like her in the industry sadly don't exist anymore.
😂😂😂
@@JuicyPopEntertainment i remember her and rick astley's song were played on black r and b stations locally ....most assumed she and him were black but my parents had bet so there videos were shown i remmeber having to tell people theyre both white and british .....it didnt really shock me because we had white girls and white dudes that can sing r and b and rap when i was growing up in the 80s

Yesssssssss …. I’m with your uncle 😂😂😂😂😂! That’s my s***!!!!
I love Lisa. She’s definitely underrated and doesn’t get the credit she deserves
I agree.
Love her too.
Most real singers careers never blow up because they don't sell out and become sex symbols. She kept it classy.
what credit do you feel she deserves?
That's such a lame statement, "underrated, doesnt get the credit". She absolutely got her due credit and accolades. ALL her hits were on the radio all day every day. Time has moved on. She stopped making music. It's over. Like most artist.
All Around the World will remain my jam for life. 💙💎
Love me some Lisa! One of my other favs is “You Can’t Deny It” ❤
I love me some Lisa Stansfield!🎶 🎤 ❤ “Around The World”, “You Can’t Deny It” ,”When Are You Comin Back” & “All Woman”. All BOPS!! She also did “Someday I’m Comin Back” on the Bodyguard soundtrack which was so nice too
That Apollo performance was top tier👏🏽👏🏽😉 She can her first plate at the cookout the way Black people was rockin w/ her 😂😂❤❤
My father kept Around the World in rotation back in the day. Personally my favorite song from her is All Woman.

Lisa Stansfield's debut album Affection is a classic
Lisa is stunning soul and R&B artist as well as dance singer. Her 80´s and 90´s hits are amazing. All Around the World, The Real Thing and This is the rigth time, my favourites
Well I am a qualified lesbian
With you on those songs; totally amazing tracks
Next year will be the 35th anniversary of Lisa Stansfield's debut album Affection
🙋🏾♂️ I still have the American tape cassette and European CD.
An underrated incredible artist. My favorite is “All Woman.” Miss her singing.
I remember when she did Showtime At The Apollo. That little white woman had the whole audience on their feet. It was so powerful and amazing!
Lisa was THAT GIRL back in the day. I wore that Affection tape OUTTTT y'all🔥🔥🔥🔥
Me too. I scratched of all the albums also! Lol
That "Go Lisa!" from her Apollo performance always makes me so happy inside
I love this story. I was 9 when I first heard it on local radio. 34 years later, it's still a timeless classic.
I am from texas and used to listen to her on cassette tape everyday she had a beautiful soulful voice which I could not get enough of.
Her cover of Never Never Gonna Give You Up is fantastic!
I used to sing the 'Around the World" song before going to daycare as a kid, I had no clue who sung the song or how she looked until I was in college. Still a powerful vocalist! Thank you for this update on her.
Excellent story on Lisa Stansfield
Her and Teena Marie are my favorite yt women when it comes to blue-eyed soul ❤️.
You should do a video on Regina Belle!
Teena Marie thought she was black....I wouldn't classify her as blue eyed soul
@@naturaldisaster2
😂😂😂
@@naturaldisaster2 I bet she made a mean potato salad.
Mark Genous. Oh she is blue eyed soul. When "Square Biz"and " I Need Your Lovin" came out, blacks were surprised that she was white. Everyone thought she was black. Plus, her music scored high on the R&B charts.
Her first album "Wild And Peaceful" in 1979 did not have her face shown on the album cover. That was great marketing at Motown records. Once we found out she wasn't Black we didn't care. Teena always delivered. She was multi talented. I still play her catalog quite often. Us Black folks love Teena Marie aka Lady Tee ⚘
Lisa Stanfield was highly respected in The Black Community. She even did a duet with The Legendary Barry White.
That's an interesting comment. I remember back in the day, reading that the black community felt she was purposely trying to sound like a black singer and they were not happy about it.
The Brits have some of the best musical artists ever. Her 'Affection' album is a classic not one bad track ✨
British urban music is underrated in America SMDH
@@cleftheart1969 I concur! I luv a lot of the oldies like Soul ll Soul, Mica Paris, Rick Astley n my absolute fav George Michael!!

That’s true - my city of Manchester and the Greater Manchester area is a powerhouse of musical talent. Lisa Stansfield, M People, Simply Red, Oasis, The Happy Mondays, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, The Hollies, Take That, The Buzzcocks, The Be Gees etc etc…… and that’s just a few.

The video for “All Woman” made me cry…as a 10-year-old. Everytime it was on Video Soul 😊
I still play Affection till this day in 2023.
"In All the Right Places" still gives me goosebumps.🙌🏽💘

🎶BEEN AROUND THE WORLD AND IIIIII, I CAN'T FIND MY BABY🎶 Each time this comes on, I'm always screaming the IIII part lol.
British Soul is really underrated in the UK! Mica Paris needs your treatment; she's a phenomenal singer, who has never got her flowers😪 The late and great Prince truly rated her. Now that tells you something!
Her solo music was a fixture of my childhood.
She also looks so much like Linda Evangelista!
Lisa Stansfield is the last real White Female singer that sang R&B music the right way. Before her was Teena Marie.
Baby you must have forgot about Amy Winehouse cause that was the last one. Well…she was more Jazz oriented but still 🤷🏽♀️
Give Joss Stone a listen when you've got a minute!
I heard Joss Stone's music years ago and in my opinion she's "ok" but her voice doesn't move me. As Simon Cowell says "Nothing Memorable" Lol. She sounds like she's trying too hard. I've never been a fan of hers.
I didn't forget about Amy Winehouse. I've never cared for Amy Winehouse's music. Her music didn't move me. God rest her soul.
@deewoo2776Leave Teena Marie out of this 🤷🏿♀️
Her song “Change” was a big part of my life in my teens.
I love Lisa…her vocals are pure and silky!
I just bought her vinyl album affection and changes. I was really surprised that she had All Around The World, but still had a big career over in europe. I watched her in a recent interview! She's like she's having so much fun right now! I enjoyed this!
Love her 1997ish Barry White cover of "Never Gonna Give You Up".
I remember George Michael sang with Lisa at the concert together that was a big deal at the moment. When I was in high school, I first heard "around the world" and I got hook it. I brought every album of hers, and still listen to all of the soulful songs. Every time I play her songs, they ask me who this singer is? Never get tired, its still timeless, and no one ever plays like her before. She's different & unique singer.
Very talented lady with a lot of great songs. Glad she is well.
What a voice. All Around The World, You Can't Deny It...timeless tracks that exemplified the best in 90s music. All Woman contained some of the best relationship advice I ever got from a record. 30+ years later I still get emotional listening to it...Thank you for this video, I always wondered what happened with Lisa Stansfield. Before Adele, there was Her...
She's a highly underrated singer. I like her singing voice a lot...It's quite unique. 💯🔥💖🌷
I don't think she is underrated. Lisa has sold millions of records and plays to packed houses everywhere she goes decades into her career. We love her.
1. If you're mistaken for Black in your singing style,it's kinda of a COMPLIMENT (cause it means you're really good cause people are very passionate about their soul music) 2. Daryl Hall has that same problem being called a Blue eyed soul singer
No! A white singer that's being perceived (not mistaken) for a black artist who sing R&B music is not a compliment, it's an insult. Genres of music are diversified, universal regardless of a person's heritage, race and what they look like on outside and if so, that's called discrimination and it's not fair to the artist, who only just want to create music. Besides, her eyes are not blue, they're green!
@@slimdude2011 Ok, heres the problem in your self righteous, virture signaling statement: every so called-critic screams about "AUTHENTICITY"..especially in Black Soul Music. but not every music genre is "universal" that's a myth for 1980's saturday morning cartoons. if you think every pop artist is created equal or as seen as equal or are equally critqued? i gotta bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. cause there's STILL discrimination in Pop music. from Lil Nas-X's "Old town Road" not being considered "Country" to LIzzo not being "Black Enough"
....Oh this the ONE! ...I've been a MASSIVE Lisa fan from minute ONE! ..I remember seeing her on "Ralph McDaniel's Video Music Box" with "People Hold On", & was like, BA-BOOM! ...I bought every CD Single, every CD, every cassette single....and all that Money spent, on IMPORTS! ...love this Gal, IMMENSELY....
4:23 I remember she cut it off at the beginning of the "This Is The Right Time" video. There was 2 versions of that video.
If I could change....does it for me everytime!!! Saw her live at Birchmere a few years ago. She was magical!!!
She was absolutely gorgeous in "this is the right time" video.
Ive always cherished her beautiful style, sincere soul and lovely personality. Alongside Shade, her music helped me through some difficult times. ❤
What a talent ❤❤
I remember LOVING her debut album. It's a shame she did not have more longevity, because I loved her style.
“All Woman” is top teir. I understand why she didn’t like that blue eyed soul label but I also remember being tripped out when I found out she didn’t look like Anita baker or Regina Belle. I was a kid so I had very few soul references 😂
When I started listening to music from the 70s I noticed that you really could not tell who looked like what based on their voices. And soul sounds differently across genres but it’s pretty much all soul.
ONE OF THE GUYS FROM HALL & OATES HATES THAT TERM TOO,
HOWEVER IT'S A COMPLIMENTARY TERM, I GET IT THO..IT'S DEEPER..
You can’t deny it was my song in junior high ahh the memories 😁

I love Lisa she has an amazing voice we don’t see her enough 🌹❤️🇬🇧
I sat beside her on a plane once. She was extremely down to earth, and took an interest in me. I was shy to talk to her - I knew instantly that it was her when I sat down, but I only confessed to know it was her halfway through the flight. She was so good looking I was tongue tied. And I was a grown ass man ! I introduced her to my boss when we got off the plane ( he was sitting somewhere else on the plane ). Ha ha, he thought I was friends with her. I had to disabuse him of his mistake. But not until the next week haha. She is my all time 90's crush. And I met her !
Wow, fantastic
Omg around the world is still my jam!!!! “But I’m gone finnnnnnd himmmmm!!!”❤
Lisa sang her face off on All Woman
A true dance music legend!! Never knew she was British, though. Would it be possible to get a Whodini video up out of you?

"All Woman" is beautiful track and my all-time favorite by her.
I love Lisa Stansfield. When I first heard her in the 1990s, her "All Around The World" song to me seemed to have a 1970s sound . It was so pleasing. I love that song. I didn't know that she was English.
Lisa is one of my all time favorite singers. Fabulous performance as always!
Very nice reporting thank you.
Think how outstanding her and the great Barry White were together in all around the world.
It was such a great duet
Hall & Oates hated that moniker too. It makes sense.
